August BOTM? Taking all bets! <<8/24: 101 Richlite 154CM>>

Really cool knife again this month. I don't carry fixed blades and don't really dig a fixed 110, but, that would make the ultimate steak knife. I'd use that puppy to cut every steak from now until the day I die. I'd wear it to the steak house and scoff at their dull cutlery while I slice my steak with the classiest blade in the whole joint.

I think the 101 is a fine blade. I’m sorry to see it isn’t more popular in general. I think most people who like the 110 do so, in part because it’s a folder. And those who lean towards Buck’s fixed blades, at least for hunting, probably already like and use the more widely available 100 series. But I also find most of Buck’s hunting knives don’t really end up being used to that end, so this particular knife ends up being superfluous for many. At least that’s my read.

To me the 101 makes most sense in that regard, as a hunting knife, for those who appreciate the ergonomics of the 110, but prefer a fixed blade. For edc use I think there are better options, including the 110. As a one-time daily 110 carrier, I used to have kind of a neutral opinion of the 101, but once I set it to the specific task of game, I found it really shined for all the reasons the 110 does - nice long handle, just enough blade, without being too much, the blade is nice and narrow (not too tall from blade to spine) for getting into tight spaces - but with the added benefits of not having to deal with cleaning blood/guts out of the crevices the 110 has, as well as being 2oz lighter. I don't find the lack of a guard to be an issue on either model, but that’s personal preference. I have two clip point 101s (420/ebony & 5160/walnut), so I grabbed this drop point as they are otherwise tough to find. The drop point will obviously lend itself well to the task of field dressing, so I’m excited to use it. I’m not crazy about the price, especially given the handle material, but the discontinued ebony/420hc models sell for more than that when they pop up. I think it will be a capable blade, so the cost is what it is.

Congrats to everyone who nabbed one - I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Back to the BOTM.

I like this knife.
I don't plan to get one.
But I applaud Buck for coming up with something different.
We all have different likes, and items like this keep me interested in what's coming next.

That's 1/2 the fun.😊
Well said...This BOTM displayed some value and variety for some or disappointment and letdown for others, mainly in the sense of the individuals desire of the unknown. I enjoy hearing the details of this knife expounded on and the uses it could take on for some (ie. Steak knife 🔪 😋).

Looking forward to future BOTMs.

It's a nice knife, but if I'm going to spend on a 101, might as well wait for the BCCI yearly. Supposed to be September on the drop. Rather have the elk with 420 than the richlite with 154CM.
I was not aware, and I completely agree.
Being as how we are a bunch of enablers...anything wrong with getting both?:)

Maybe we'll have a purchasing trifecta, the BCCI yearly, the September BOTM, and the Blade Forums GEC all dropping at the same time. Save those pennies, folks! We're going to need them. 😂

Making a fixed blade knife from a folder is not an engineering/design feat that I care to invest in / have to own.

That’s definitely an opinion a lot of people share. Respectfully, I think there’s a certain amount of contempt prior to investigation happening there though. I try to view the 101 standing on its own, rather than through the lens of the 110. The 101 is a roughly 3.5” blade on a large ergonomic handle. Regardless of its pedigree, it’s a great hunting knife, right up there with the Grohmann or Sharpfinger, albeit with its own geometry. Personally I’d take the 101 over the classic 100 series as I don’t care for the bulk of the guard.

If Opinel, for example, released a fixed blade no 9 (same size at the 110/101), many would scoff at it being a fixed version of a folder, but it would effectively be a Finnish puukko, which people around the world love, and it would doubtless be a perfectly utilitarian blade. In a world where the 110 never was, and Buck released a 101 as a dedicated fixed hunter, I think it would probably be more popular. Though it likely wouldn’t have the blade stop, which, while silly, is functionally no different than the ricasso on the 100 series. This is a long way of saying, to each his own.

Have to consider this knife is most likely half the price of the upcoming BCCI knife.
Good point. Given I have a 101 already, I wouldn’t spend much more than the cost of this BOTM on a new one, regardless of materials. The main reason I broke for this one is the drop point, as they are tough to find.

For example, the April BOTM, the s45vn 113, is a beautiful knife, and a solid hunting blade, but I already own one in 420/ebony, which cost $50 at the time. I like 420 just fine, so steel isn’t a huge selling point for me (unless it’s 5160 - personal preference), so spending $225 on a knife I already have was just too high a price tag for me. Notably, that particular knife is still in stock after five months. With that said, if the 420/ebony drop point 101 was for sale at a regular price on Buck’s site (or anywhere), I never would’ve sprang for this one. I just happen to like this blade a lot for its intended use.

Mind saying why?
It's Grey and has the Buck logo on it. Any wood would have been better. It's the botm and it's stamped BUCK on the blade. With 800 produced, I'm sure every owner and future owner would have known what it is. Kinda looks like a steak knive. I believe the botm should be like artwork.
