I think the 101 is a fine blade. I’m sorry to see it isn’t more popular in general. I think most people who like the 110 do so, in part because it’s a folder. And those who lean towards Buck’s fixed blades, at least for hunting, probably already like and use the more widely available 100 series. But I also find most of Buck’s hunting knives don’t really end up being used to that end, so this particular knife ends up being superfluous for many. At least that’s my read.
To me the 101 makes most sense in that regard, as a hunting knife, for those who appreciate the ergonomics of the 110, but prefer a fixed blade. For edc use I think there are better options, including the 110. As a one-time daily 110 carrier, I used to have kind of a neutral opinion of the 101, but once I set it to the specific task of game, I found it really shined for all the reasons the 110 does - nice long handle, just enough blade, without being too much, the blade is nice and narrow (not too tall from blade to spine) for getting into tight spaces - but with the added benefits of not having to deal with cleaning blood/guts out of the crevices the 110 has, as well as being 2oz lighter. I don't find the lack of a guard to be an issue on either model, but that’s personal preference. I have two clip point 101s (420/ebony & 5160/walnut), so I grabbed this drop point as they are otherwise tough to find. The drop point will obviously lend itself well to the task of field dressing, so I’m excited to use it. I’m not crazy about the price, especially given the handle material, but the discontinued ebony/420hc models sell for more than that when they pop up. I think it will be a capable blade, so the cost is what it is.
Congrats to everyone who nabbed one - I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
