I have a cold steel trail boss at home in the wood shed that I have been using to split logs for the stove and I've had a few too many overstrikes with it. It's no longer safe to use. Not worth the time and energy to rehandle it, so I have a Fiskars X17 on the way.

I had bonded with the trail boss, and I will miss using it. But the Fiskars is a joy to use, which comes as no surprise to me given the other one I have up at the shop. I do wish the Fiskars had a longer cutting edge though.

And it's a Michigan pattern , but much better looking than the stuff they'd make over the following 10 years or so.

Early medieval frankish style hatchett, the last few were monosteel, I made this one with a forge welded edge.

Brought the Fiskars X5 with me for a coffee in the woods this morning... chopped of a branch and split it with the X5

Such a pleasure to split wood with this little guy

Even curls and shaving are made surprisingly easy with it...

Looks like somebody was trying to add value by " customizing" it, so I'd personally pass unless they aren't trying to get more than it's normally worth.

I only really have an interest in American/ north American axes though, so my opinion probably doesn't matter.

Hi, thanks for your comment. AI tells me that this is a special series from the Italian brand and that the leather (or faux leather) is original. The body is a single metal piece and it’s a rare model that fetches high prices at auctions... I’m not sure if it’s worth adding to a collection.

AI is wrong again as usual, it knows nothing about old stuff.
Look at the signs of age on the head then compare that to the leather on the handle that's fresh and clean, and from what I can see of the handle underneath the leather it also has some age and wear to it that the leather does not.
