Back by Popular Demand... What folder do you guys carry?

Standard: As you may very well be aware (but this may come as a shock to most people who think that Cali is a communist republic) open carry of knives of any size is absolutely legal in CA!!! There are caveats though within certain cities such as LA & SF, but unless there are local prohibitions, one can open carry a friggin Samurai sword here in Cali

Thing is you have to make sure it is absolutly in open view and not tucked in and concealed and you better know your laws really well to recite chapter and verse because most cops don't know shiite regarding knives! But yeah, things like assisted folders, balisong and some other stuff like daggers are illegal. I think that the blade restriction on "utility knives" here are 3 & 1/2, but I've got to check.

P.S. I'm about 90 miles south of you in North San Diego ;)

Yep you're right about all of that. I forgot to say that I carry them concealed on my belt with my shirt hanging over them.
My major loophole that I'll use are the stab wounds I have on my arm and on my cheek. If a cop wanted to give me a hard time, pointing those out would probably dissolve the issue.
Ahh so you're in the nice part of San Diego county!! Lucky!

I've had 2 Striders, both SnGs, 4 Hinderer XMs, and over 20 Sebenzas. Tell me what you really like about the Strider and perhaps I can help direct your aim. CRK does make lefties, if you are indeed a lefty and not ambidextrous.

Holy crap!!
The size and blade length are great on the SNG. I think the blade is a little thick, but it isn't an issue because I don't cut paper or produce with pocket knives.
I was under the assumption that the 21 had a thinner blade than the 25 and Umnumzaan.
As far as lefty knives, I'm ambidextrous, plus I'm used to using right hand frame locks.
What is your personal favorite out of their lineup?

If I was younger, I'm 67yo, I would be more apt to spend money on anything. In this case, a knife. But I might not make it through the night, not to mention long enough to makea Griptilian or a Chris Reeves worth the money. I also enjoy finding good value for the money.

This said, over the past year, I've been carrying one or another of my SAKS, with the favorite being the Farmer (I wish they'd add scissors to that configuration) in one pocket, and a larger, locking blade folder in another. I am more and more carrying an Opinel #10,carbone. A lot of bang for the buck in both those knives.

Except for an Emmerson, I have removed all belt clips from my knives. I hate bumping into them wheni put my hand in my pocket (to get my Nitro glycerine? Or furry ribbon candy for the grands?) I'm also carrying, frequently, a Mora #1 or a Mora #2 with laminated blade. The sheaths just slide right in and out of my pocket, I hook it to my shirt button, like a neck knife with no neck involved. A lot folks don't know most Mora sheaths are designed to clip on a button.

The SAK Farmer is hard to beat! I agree that it would be great if they added scissors to it.

I found this on a California lawyer's site. Might be accurate:

"Folding knives are knives that “opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or that biases the blade back toward its closed position” . All folding knives are legal. California Penal Code Section 17235. As long as they are in the folded position they can be carried in a concealed manner. There is no blade length restriction per the penal code."

On that note, anything we are discussing should be fine.

I didn't like my Striders, as they were overly thick and heavy, the pocket clip was super stiff but had little traction, the lock was sticky and too stiff. The pivot action felt like someone used the knife to dig a latrine pit. The frame would get worn by the push fit thumb stud which doubles as the stop pin and it looks awful when they do it this way. Both mine had a bad bevels, the better of the two was the Z-Wear. It was OK, came fairly dull and cut like crap. I was super not impressed and sold them off quickly.

I went and tried the XM, they were a lot better than the SnG. I figured the 21 and the SnG had a baby and it was the XM. The machining was not as good as what CRK puts out, and at that price point I expect a high level of attention to detail. Between these two, if you favor the sharpened pry bar, super over built knife, go with the XM.

When the Sebenza 25 came out, I had high hopes. It didn't disappoint. The 21 is a much more elegant, high tolerance piece of craftsmanship, but it is not as hard use as the XM. I recently sold a small micarta 21 that was literally perfect. Beside a XM, it feels light and dainty. With my uses the Sebenza takes all I can give it and I prefer the quality of the CRK so I went that way. When you look at them side by side, the 21 though capable felt small and light. But as it was perfect, it was a joy to pour over the details of. The XM was like a tank, compared to it. 3.5" BTW. Lots of little imperfections on it. Not a joy to examine. Just a tool. It was almost like, Uhhh. Both seem too far to the extreme in a sense.

After going through all those knives, I carry a rotation of Sebenza 25s, but my collectibles are 21s.

My favorite user folder of everything I have owned across probably 35+ knives that cost me $500+ CAD is the Sebenza 25. I have one coming back from the Spa soon and when it gets here, I will be selling it. It's a Plain Jane 25. I also have a TNK edition 25 so silver hardware, a serialized carbon fiber 25 which is probably going for sale, and my hands down fits me like it was made for my size 10 hands is the micarta inlay 25.

I had a Zaan but for many reasons, primarily the lockbar I sold it. I prefer the Sebenza there.

One knife you may look into, is a Inkosi. It's too small for me, but if they made a larger size, maybe a bit smaller than a 25, it would probably replace all my folders. See if you can try one somewhere. If so, and it works for you, they can be bought at a great price on the exchange.

Before I had the micarta 25 I was super happy with the standard 25 size and fit so I had 3. But now after using the micarta, I don't like the normal ones as much. I might actually pick up a second as a spare and sell all the other 25s. I also rock a Damascus 21 from time to time, but it's going for retirement soon. It's beautiful, but I can't use it on acidic foods, abrasive materials etc because I am afraid to damage the blade so I prefer a plain S35VN as a user.

If you get some research in, and try some in your hand at a local store, and do decide the 25 is worth it, PM me and I will give you a smokin' deal on the 25 when it comes back from the Spa.

Hope this is somewhat useful.

That's very useful JustinFournier!
I'll have to get off my butt and go down to Plaza Cutlery soon to check them all out.
The 25 is a great looker, and I really like that they don't have the extra alignment hole in the scale.
I guess I got lucky with this SNG because it's smooth and the lockup is great. I like the simple utilitarian feel it has, but there's no way that I would spend $400+ on it.

Was my 2nd year in a row it's become an annual pilgrimage for the wife and we have a blast.
Its a great little folder so many useful things on it. My next purchase from SAK might be the bushcrafter.
Only two or 3 options on that one I think. Blade, saw, and awl I think.
I Recently bought a SAK Out Rider. It's big, but has everything I want or need, including a really good sized saw. Because of where I live, I disabled the lock, but so what? Tain't no big deal. In 60 years of knife use, I never got cut by one folding up on me. Cut other ways, you know, but not that one.

For those that know (I don't) isn't a lock back just a cool way to cut costs, by not installing a high quality spring, and then needing a very high level of fit and finish to make it look, feel, and function well?

Oh wow, you live near Plaza? I bought a large Sebenza 21 with Ebony inlay and a beautiful Raindrop Damascus blade from them last month. Dan is great to deal with. You gotta go in there for sure.

Yeah they're about 45 minutes away from here. I've been procrastinating on purpose because I would probably spend way to much money in there!
That Sebenza sounds like a beauty!

Dang! That's some information I really didn't need to know because South Coast Plaza where they are located at is just about 60 miles north of me too. My poor, poor wallet! Ouch!

There is no help!
Be thankful that you're knife obsessed and not gun obsessed.
That used to be a painful hobby.

Totally concur with this. Just limited to a few home defense pieces (couple of handguns and a shotgun) which rarely see the light of day. Would have been a totally different story though if I was not living in such an urban setting ;)

Finally here are my folder EEC (every evening carry which I alternate plus that little pooch as my avatar!):
