Backyard SURVIVE!n'

Modest shenanigans inspired by the OP. A guy has to start somewhere, right?

Although I already posted this in my dedicated "worship my GSO 5 thread" it happened in my backyard so...........

Awesome stuff SN!
It's a great way to get a feel of what the knife is capable of.
I really like these midsize blades because you can beat the crap out of something and whittle with it right after.

Wow, that comment nailed it! I would not have thought of those words but they really sum up my love for the 5

Haha yep!!
I know the 4.1 and 3.5 can take one heck of a beating but I really like the solid tang for extra security. The blade geometry on these mid size knives just split wood like crazy also.

I think I'm finally getting the hang of feather sticks. It takes a lot of patience and control for sure!

Very nice. I haven't practiced them in a while. Used to be able to make them huge like wooden cotton candy lol. Been a while for me because I only do enough to get a fire started with a firesteel then move on to other stuff when I'm camping. I gotta start doing more of them to stay sharp

I've never been good at making them with any knife so I typically just grab anything that's dry and light it up! I almost wanted to pat myself on the back after getting these little ones done. I usually get pissed and just throw them!

I almost want to chop down on of my cypress trees just so I can get a decent sized piece of material to work with! Everything here is so small and full of knots.

I'm headed to a place called Caddo lake. Its full of Cypress trees. You gotta walk back in the marsh a ways to find them right around here.

Thanks man I'm trying. I'm hoping to get up to Brian_T's level one of these years!

Yea he's a beast on the sticks.

LOL! Thanks guys. Lots of practice I guess.

I went on Instagram a while back (after that mack-daddy featherstick) and searched for the #Featherstick hashtag and there are some insane featherstick-ers there. Makes mine look like 1st Grade effort. LOL!

I was in the woods with a buddy not too long ago and, while I was carving feathersticks and making scrapings to get a fire going, he whipped out a cotton ball and vaseline and a Bic and was making coffee while i was still whittling. Puts it all into perspective... :D

I really enjoy making various types of at home fire starters, but knowing how to do it from scratch in the woods with a knife is a very bad ass and useful skill

I'll have to go check out that hashtag on Instagram. I remember seeing a guy whip up a crazy feather stick in a video only using a Spyderco and it was beyond impressive! I tried with a Manix 2 and failed horribly.

I'm with Redwood22 on thinking it's just cool to try different things but you're right about it being a lot simpler just using modern ways to light a fire. Last Friday I sat and watched my buddy work his butt off trying to get an ember with a bow drill setup but the wood was just to wet. It was still really cool though!

My buddy and I almost always try the primitive ways to start fires. I carry cotton balls soaked in triple antibiotic cream and it works great but I get more fulfillment out of the old school ways. (Even if I suck at it)

It definitely is fun just messing around! Having a backup is really smart though and I still haven't tried the cotton ball method. I'll have to add that to the list.
