Bad Experience with wolf-man-12

I know I am new to these boards, but I have to post an experience I had with Jack that was disturbing.
I put up a post seeking a Spyderco Vesuvius. He PM'd me saying he had one for sale. He claimed he had no pics but that it was in great shape.
I sent him a paypal payment and assumed all was good. A few days later I receive a package from Jack containing a cheap $10 chinese knife.
His version of the story is that he went to his local post office and showed the knife off to people in the post office (which made no sense to me) , then packed it and shipped it. I had both my young boys with me when I opened the box and they saw exactly what was in the package.

I know Jack has a lot of posts and has a very good prior record of sales/purchases in the feedback section. I also know as a "new" board member, people may approach my version of this dispute with caution, but I am being completely honest with my feedback and with what happened. I just don't want other board members to fall prey to anything like this. Initially he was somewhat responsive to my emails and said he would try to see what he could do. Then the emails stopped and I had to keep following up to see if he had made any progress. He seemed disinterested in this problem unless I emailed asking for updates.

Bottom line is Jack has my $158 and I have a piece of junk knife. He also claims he got insurance on the package but oddly can't put any claim in. None of this makes any sense to me. Today he decided to stop responding to my emails with no resolution. I had no other choice but to put my version of the events out there and warn any other potential buyers.
 
The funds were sent as a gift as to avoid fees. I will NEVER do that again. He said he insured the package so I assumed we were covered.
 
One good lesson learned here is that the few dollars extra it costs to incur paypal fees are worth it for the protection it provides you. A very costly lesson.
 
I sent him a PM informing him of the thread.
 
USPS will not pay on insurance since they did deliver a package from him to you.

Have you told him about this thread? If not, please do so.
Also, read the stickies at the head of the FEEDBACK forum.
 
I did tell him earlier that his refusal to discuss the situation would force me to go to the boards to relay my version of the events. I have read the stickes that looked relevant. Was my post in violation of anything?

Never use the gift option, for one.
 
Damn, that sucks that someone would rip you off just because you're new. He was once new here himself. Just last week I had the pleasure of making a trade with a newbie. I'm glad I did, it made me realize how much BF gains from having people continuing to join us.
 
Just because a member has been here quite awhile, and has had good feedback, doesn't mean that they can't decide to try and pull a fast one.
It is too bad you can't access the security video tapes, from the P.O that he mailed it from. Hopefully he will have a change of heart, and make it right.

I was thinking that same thing. I wish there was some way I could talk to the people at his P.O. and try to get to the bottom of this.

Part of my putting this post up was to give him a chance to tell his side of this story. It just doesn't sound kosher on any level.
 
As I think about this more and go over his emails, it's starting to become more apparent to me that something was fishy from the beginning.

Here's part of a message he sent me right after he mailed it out -> "Tony, I sent it Priority Mail and Insured it plus you will have to sign for it so that it shows you got it.! Ira at the Post Office really liked the Knife... "

And this -> "Tony,Had to fly out of town on business but got your knife out this afternoon ~~
and you will have to sign for it plus I got Ins. on it which I dought I will need but better safe than sorry plus you should have it in 3 days Priority Mail."

He kept mentioning that I would have to sign for it and that he got insurance which he "never" does. I guess that should have tipped me off that something was not right.

Again, you live and you learn.
 
I have done many trades with Jack and he has even gifted me quite a few knives. I try and return the favor by gifting him something but it usually shows right back up at my door with yet another gift inside the box. I am still in contact with Jack and wouldnt hesitate another trade or even buying from him. Give it time and try to work it out.

I completely understand Jack's good reputation on the site and that is why I was willing to work things out for so long. He sent the knife on Dec 4. It's now Jan 9th. I've been emailing him regularly looking for updates, but I got nowhere. The last few emails were accusatory, claiming that I am a "newbie" trying to "scam" him. He then said he would no longer respond to my emails. That is why I had to option but to turn to the boards. I even spoke to Jack on the phone and he did certainly seem like a pleasant and straightforward guy. I just don't know where else to turn. I'm out $158 and can't seem to get anywhere with Jack. I very badly want to believe this was an honest mistake, but I just don't get it.
 
I PM'd him and emailed him with a link to the thread. No response as of yet. I was hoping he would respond and give everyone his side of the story. I think when he does, it will be clear why I am so disturbed by all of this.
