I was prepared to leave this thread as it stands but since it has been bumped I would like to add an update.
I have spoken with Paulo pretty extensively over the past several months after I was encouraged to do so by another person. Clearly several people involved have their own sides to the story but at the end of the day, everyone I know of has been made whole by Paulo. I only know of one person who did not either get their money back or get a knife from him and that person specifically told Paulo to keep the money because he clearly needed it more than the buyer did.
Since then, Paulo has opened up about the people he is working with and has made a pretty conscious effort to ensure he isn't taking money for anything that isn't already complete. He has been contrite and he knows the vast majority is watching his every move to keep him on the straight and narrow.
He's not the first maker to have these issues and he won't be the last.
As the originator of the thread, I thought it might mean something to let people know that even I have been willing to give him another chance.
Balzano is back at it even thou he still has outstanding orders from the last time he stole money and "gave up" knife making

Kickstarter has a system to report people like this.
Which they do exactly NOTHING with.
So far I've backed two separate projects that cost me close to $200 in total.
In both cases the prototypes were ready, the scored insanely high in the funds gathering departement...
And I've gotten exactly ZILCH for my troubles.
Kickstarter can be fun...but you better be damn sure who you're backing is dependable...because if someone rakes in thousands and just disappear with your cash they'll do nothing to help you.
You're right of course. I invested in a documentary film project based on its topic and the celebrity that was involved in its production. I learned exactly what kind of value he put on his personal reputation. Over 3 years of waiting, never got any of the items that were promised. I publically shamed the thieves and liars on their website, on Facebook, and on Kickstarter until I got a refund but it was an educational experience.
