bark river vs Fällkniven

I beg to disagree. I have a Jim Mikesson Stewart hunter from BRKT with a size and geometry very much like the F1.

It is sharper and stronger, an absolutely reliable workhorse that will cut and carve into resistant material with ease. And the handle front allows you to use a pinch grip for fine work that I consider extremely useful.

How can you tell if it's stronger since you obviously haven't tested both knives to their limit? The both look new.

I'm going to wait a year or two and see if Fallkniven comes out with an A2 blank with the 3G laminate.

Don't hold your breath, mate. ;) They will most likely never come out with an A2 blank made of 3G, much less in a year or two. Even seeing an A2 blank made of laminated VG-10 is unlikely. The reasons have been stated before. Not very popular, and the size of the blade would make it expensive, especially with 3G (and 3G isn't a particularly smart choice for a large knife anyhow).

Well if Fallkniven doesn't want to sell them I'm sure someone else will eventually. Seems a shame to be in business and not want to make money. Oh those unreasonable customers.

Why should they sell you a blank when they can sell the whole knife for much more?
My guess is 3G is not easy to work with and they are probably pushing just to get enough G3 blades for their own knives. The only reason they would even sell blanks is because
they had more than enough VG10 blades and it is a skandi tradition.

Very few companies even sell blanks most of them skandis or knife kits and I have never seen anything big like an A1 or S1 in anything better than VG-10 or 440C.
The Darryl Ralph kits are not bad and Grohman make some mystery stainless ones.

If you want to do a custom handle on something like G3 steel you pretty much have to buy the whole knife.

The thing i like about Fallkniven is it is a no brainer. They are usually the fixed knife I recommend(spyderco for folders) because you just pick out your size and purpose then what sheath and colour and Bob's your uncle.

Barkies are like a collectors dream with a 1000 models with hundreds of options.
I especially like some of the unique ones like the Golok and micro canadian.

Anyone have any chipping issues with the Fallkniven F1 when doing heavy chopping and battoning?

You can't really chop with a F1 so let's forget about heavy chopping.

I find the F1 i little small for battoning, but i baton a lot on my A1 and the edge remains perfect.

Fallkniven has an excellent reputation but I wonder given the handle material and plastic sheath, do they offer "value" for money?

+1

I couldn't agree more!

See I have a couple bark rivers and a even more fallknivens and for a knife collector I would say yes bark river does look very nice but lets talk about practical use for a second because everything else is an opinion. I like how everyone bashes fallknivens rubber handles...when thats one of the best things about it! You skin a deer with an F1 or H1 ect.. you will be very glad the handles are rubber and the steel is STAINLESS you go on a winter hike and its sleeting everything is soaked... again stainless and rubber handles trumps the micarta, wood, bocote, ivory, and stag handles hands down. Anyone ever had issues with blood and guts getting in between where the handle meets the steel on a bark river? well i have! BUT bark river knives are very nice and yea I know they make them in CPM154 and gunnys in 19c27 ect but again where are my rubber handles that work so awesome in outdoors? One last thing the A-2 tool steel is very good as long as you dont get it wet I have a Bravo1 in A-2 and I have never used it but I have handled it a few times because I could not resist and I know that this is my fault but now it has RUST on tang in between the handles JUST FROM ME HANDLING IT and I know that this is totally my fault but is a hard use wilderness blade supposed to get rust just from touching it? I think I'll opt for the bravo 1 SS next time but here we go again with those handles being maintained. I will admit bark river knives do look better than fallkniven though!
