Basic Urban Survival Folder

Thanks. I'm working on the red linen one right now
STR

YAY :D! I just noticed that the list does not have my request for a tip up, right hand clip (must have been missed in the hundreds of posts here). If you could please add one it would be greatly appreciated (low rider not necessary).

Ever notice how time slows the closer you get to what you want.

Boy are we lucky! These are looking great! Are you going to make any money on them? Thanks again for doing this project. That is going to be a close fit for the lanyard hole with a clip isn't it? Great work all around!!!!

How much of a bother would it be for you to tap my naked one for tip up and down?

Right hand. All my current folders are set up for tip up and I think I'd like to try tip down, with the option of going back to tip up...depending.

I still am wanting the low ride and anodizing... can you get a yellow color of ano? I think I want something bright for this one.

thanks again.

I know I'm not on the list but if anyone is on it who changes his/her mind then I'm available. I'll take any configuration at any handle scale color (if possible STR I'd still like both sides to be different color but I'd settle for anything including (especially) CF :)) at any clip position etc you get the pic.

I'm this desperate cause I like STR's customs and designs (I'm kinda particular/anal about design especially this particular practical design) but I'd never be able to afford it normally. Plus I read that STR may not be going for a 2nd run (I can't find the post but I'm sure I read it) so that's why I'm offering this, sorry if I appear to be unprofessional/unconventional/unsporting.

In any case congrats dudes/dudettes who are getting one, I'm sure it'll be a great cutter out-cutting most (if not all) of your plain edged (I'm of the opinion in some cases serrated do cut better) knives/folders.

PS: STR, why is the blade appear blackened in the 1st page/post but shiny silvery in the recent pics? Thanks.

Not really. I'm sure if I was to break it down I'd learn that I'm basically paying you guys to make a folder for you but I came up with the price and have to live with that now. I don't think I'm taking a loss at all on the materials just giving away a great deal of labor and time. The good news on that is I do it all the time anyway on other things so I'm used to it.

Cotherion I gun blued my blade and it barely took to make it turn. Its old solution and I threw it out after realizing it was weak from old age once I used it three times on my blade and barely made the head way one coat would have made with new solution. It made just enough difference to notice its blue but its easily removed and has actually come off in places now from using it.

Kris you are fine adding it since I have to make one to mount on Teachers.

FOD I will tap it tip up and down for you and make you a clip. I'll have to look I was thinking you were waiting on a blade from Christof is that right?

You guys waiting on Christof will be later on but I guess you know that. I've got the red linen set contoured, the teal set behind it contoured and will do the rest of that today one behind the other before setting my grinder back up to profile the blades and make lock contacts.

I see, I'm not too familiar with 'gun bluing' though I heard it a few times here in BF. I suppose it's for corrosion/rust protection? If done with new solution is it durable?

Even if done with new solution does it come out in peels assuming it's removed or is it just when it's old solution bluing?

Sorry for the Qs. I am planning to internet research in the future (like so many things I meet/hear/read/see in bladeforums that I never heard before) but I'm so busy keeping my business alive. You mentioned 130 (I think that's what you said) and I'd hate for you to make a loss. Perhaps a low rider clip's profit (and some other non-standard) modifications should enable you to recover the cost?

I really feel if this folder is made into production then it'll do well. At the current price it's like a production's price even right now. Made into something like mass production then I think a decent profit can be made at 130 per pop.

Thanks for the explanation/explanations. Much appreciated.

Well, its not going to be me that goes into a production I can tell ya that. :D

Its nice to think but no thanks. I came up with $135 as the final pricing. Adding some extras will cost you since I was figuring no threading, no extra holes drilling at all really but forgot to mention wanting a lanyard to Dave so on that I am fine. Actually I'm fine with the rest of it. I am having fun and thats what its all about. My main concern is everyone's patience since I may take a breather between some of these to just get mentally prepared for the next stuff coming you know?

On the gun blue. If its not a baked on solution it won't last as well no matter what you use. Its just a coating and the only reason I do it some on carbon blades is because I expect they'll be unsightly the first time I cut into an onion or some other acidic fruit or vegetable and the black seems to cover that up and make it blend with less of a 'dirty' look to it. Still though it does fade with age and eventually remove as you use the folder and honestly its probably not all that good for you in your food anyways. :barf:

Steve, that looks great !

I have read over this thread quickly and if I missed what I am about to ask/say... my apologies. :o

IF, a clip is an option... I would like one on mine please.

Thank you,

As I said earlier I did not put a clip in the price when I calculated it. My low riders add the standard $30 to add that in. If you still want one guys I need to know because I made up what I had in the way of needs and changed out the blade on my band saw from metal cutting to micarta cutting thinking I'd cut out all the clips I needed for this run.

My band saw is very persnickedy when it comes to adjusting it anymore so its not the quick job it used to be since it tends to need fussing with to get right from one blade to the next. I guess its getting old too! :barf:

Anyway, if you do want a clip please add the additional $ and also I need to know tip up, or down and what hand carry you want.

Thanks

Sorry about that Steve. PM sent, what ever you decide works for me.. :)

No Sir,

I was wanting the original cobbler version...but I'll take what I can get and no worries and no hurries on my end.

Thanks again,

-Todd

Wow! My bad entirely. I should have already done yours. Its the easiest one of all. I can probably get yours going and out of here pretty quick for you. Expect it early to mid next week.

My apologies. I don't know what I was thinking. Oh, and I can get a brass color/gold color but not really a yellow per say. I'll do the best I can though trying to please your need. All the spacers are black. Not that I would not prefer to have options but the blade is so thin that even with my thickest washers the spacer is still thinner than most end up being so I had to use what was the best fit at the closest measurement.

STR

Like I said, no hurries, but that is good news.

I am thinking some glow in the orange burlap I have will end up on it

Thanks again

FOD your folder is packed up and ready to ship tomorrow to you or as soon as I get your address. I know I had it but can't find it. Sorry.

I've included the barrels, screws, rear spacer/stand off and washers. The thumb stud is mounted on the blade. The folder is going to need assembled and it and the low rider clip you opted for are both anodized gold as requested. The clip is mounted. I included a set of longer clip screws in the event that the two in there holding it on the lock side are too short for your handle scales to reach the titanium. Not knowing what thickness you plan I figured that was best. You can cut or grind those down to the length you need I'm sure. The detent ball is set and in place and that helps to have just a small spot of grease on it to start off with when you assemble the folder. Grease like gun grease, super lube, or something of that nature seems to me to work best. I'd leave the washer areas alone. These are similar to the Emerson washers in the material and they do require a break in. Once the anodized and bead blasted surface wears off a bit and smooths out the action will get smoother so expect that to take place. My own personal is silky smooth now but it took about 500 or more openings and closings to do that.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding with my missing your order and not getting it done first.

I managed to get a good bit more done on the red linen and teal canvas ones coming up next. Slowly I'm picking away at them working my way down the list.

Thanks. I just PM'd my shipping info. I have a bunch of 1/4" 2-56 screws, so I really did not need more...I thought I mentioned that, but that is OK.

The only problem I foresee is I am pretty busy just know and I need to resist putting off other work and getting on this when it gets in.

I am very much looking forward to getting it in.

And please, no apologies are needed. I am a patient guy, and again, no worries and no hurries.

The clip is secured now with 1/4" screws. I didn't know if that would be enough length if you end up with a slab on there so I threw two 2-56 T-6 Torx in 1/2" length in there for you.

The green BUSTR has landed! My first impression is. . . that I really like it! It is lighter weight than I had guessed and the thin blade makes it a fantastic slicer. It opens very smoothly out of the box and is getting smoother the more I play with it :) Thanks Steve for making such an awesome knife. I am definitely using this one a lot.

Good to hear it arrived safe and sound. Use and enjoy. I sure do that with mine.

Thanks Lycosa

And thanks for the heads up Detour.

Just a quick heads up. I'm gettin' real close on completion for Cuts Like a Kris and Teacher here so I'll be surprised if I'm not done both today but at least one I'm sure I'd say. How the first one goes will probably determine how the second pans out.

Stay tuned.

Couple WIP shots for you.

The blades start out like shown in my first post to start off this thread.

Then end up cut down marking with a sharpy where I need to put it or close. Then once I get it to close and open cleanly like shown here after grinding all my spots down I test fit it. If its a go then I get my MAP arm out and use the table to grind my lock contact to the proper angle the rest of the way down. If I'm lucky I hit it real good and don't have to adjust anything out and next step is assembly and final fit, bead blast after that, set the detent ball once I've marked the spot on the blade for it to catch the ball and then spring my lock. If it all looks good I test it. Check it for fit and call it done once I'm satisfied its there.

These are just a few steps away now from being knocked out.

Then I have Woodysone on the bench to finish up next.

I think both these are looking pretty good. After profiling some of the micarta its a hard call for me to pick one that I like the best. The teal is looking pretty awesome though.
