Batoning contest

After I finish up finals this coming week I may give this a shot. Time is the main concern though. Will see.

Thanks!

I'm in...just wondering though. Would you consider letting us not burn it after it's done?? I'm thinking many of these will be pretty funny, pitiful maybe, hysterical???? Might be a fun keepsake or even pass it down to kids and grandkids!

And I hope everyone will post pics even if their cabin does not turn out so well - that might be fun for all of us. I plan to post pics of mine even if it ends up just being a pile of sticks! (Which is quite possible:)

Pictures are a keepsake. Wood is for burning :D it will be the fun part of this contest so burning is a must. Plus I just like fire and you, Colonel, are not taking that from me :D

OK Clich - Burning it shall be:D And thanks for setting this up!

I mentioned this contest to my wife, and she was actually semi-interested, and wants to help out for the event.

This would be a milestone, as it would be the first time that "lady logan" has really wanted to help out with anything like this.

This week is finals week. After this, its game on :).

Thanks for doing this Clich, this is a great idea.

I just might be in on this. I was wandering around gathering branches at like 5am on Saturday morning. When I walked in the house with an armful of branches the gf gave me one of those wth are you doing looks. :)

The trolling comment has been dealt with and the post and all related posts have been moved to the chat thread. Let's keep this about the contest. It's a good one.

I started batoning up some wood, with a BK2 loner I got from a member here, perfect op for me to really evaluate the BK2, even though my cabin might look like a turd when done.

One week in the books, two to go. Not one entry. This makes me even more sad then derekh's missing mustache avatar. Luckily that got straightened out swiftly.....

I don't have a camera right now, but am going back to my parents house to "borrow" one.
Finals are done, so I should have something up in the next few days, unless something happens.
The necker is up for one hell of a challenge.
Thanks for the cool contest.

I have the wood cut down, just need to cross grain baton it to length and baton it to the right diameter, then I can start the notches.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Well here is a partial entry.

Had some old pine laying around, so figured I would start with that.

Ran out of that, so had to go to my stash of soft maple.

Calling it quits for today.

Got a chance to finish up.
I'd say about 80% of the pieces have notches. (some didn't need notches to fit)
This is the finished product, with the work horse in there for scale.

All of the roof is notched, and lashed together with maple bark.

I gathered the fire making stuff, tried to put the roof back on. When I picked it up, it basically just fell apart. I should have put I should have put a support beam at the top of the "A" and lashed to that.
Oh well
Several hours of work went up in flames.

Once again thanks to Clich for the chance and making this generous contest.
It was fun, and any excuse to get in the woods is a good excuse.

I will give this a shot!
I also think you messed up, the batoning king is the bk2 without a doubt!
the bk9 is still great but it will never trump the the real king!

Well here goes nothing........ My wife left me unattended for most of the day (she should really know better than that).

All knife work done with my BK5. Why? Because I CAN, that's why.

That and I haven't had a reason to put the 5 through it's paces, other than some kitchen duty, since I've had it. I've seen enough reviews to know it can handle this with ease.

The cut-to-size logs (ok 'log' may be overstating, maybe 2" diameter)....

Baton = Split, split, split....

Notch, notch, notch....

It's coming together now....

Home sweet home, or maybe cozy cozy cabin. Ok, not the prettiest thing in the world...

I thought I'd wait until dark for the finale. Some gutted paracord soaked in gasoline for the fuse...

Whoosh... Boom goes the dynamite...

Let simmer, then serve...

Thanks for the contest Clich, it was a fun time.

To all the pyros out there, hope I was able to get you your fix for the night:D
