I'm new here, but this looked like fun so I gave it a shot. I used the only Becker I have, a BK-11. I was really impressed with its performance but batoning all that wood was a lot of work with the little guy. Honestly, though, i've never batoned anything till today. I can only imagine that doing this with something a little larger, like a BK-9, would be a lot easier... did I mention I only have one Becker? Anyway...
Actually, the explosion of flame sort of surprised and had a cool factor that negated any reservations I had about setting it on fire. The physical object may have gone up in flames but I learned a skill that will stay with me forever so it was all worth it.
Im in here is my work in progress. My son is learning to baton and is giving me a hand.
Raw materials some seasoned red oak that was fairly straight grained but pretty hard to notch lol
Splitting the logs
Cross batoning to length
The basic shape It has a front door.
Preparing the chinking a mixture of wood shavings leaves and mud stirred with the BK9
