Batoning ESEE 5 into Becker BK-2 and vice versa !!

Not to stick my nose in, but seriously, all those talking trash about him doing this, they are his knives, and he can do whatever the heck he wants with 'em. Plain and simple. You don't have to like it. I for one am a die hard Becker fan, but this is at the very least interesting to watch, and yeah, informative too. He wanted to know, and instead of coming over to our neck of the woods and trying to battle 'ole Moose in a contest of will, he did the scientific thing and put his money where his mouth was and went for broke.

Kudos to you sir, and to all the haters, stop hatin.

Thank you. I'll have you know I still have my BK-2 with the brown Micarta handles at the ready by the back door. I use it to split wood for kindling and out in the yard. I re-profiled the edge and actually love the knife. That is why I bought new ones to do the test. I did not want to damage any knife I use and have memories with.

Really?

All I wanted to do was add a couple serrations to my ESEE. Mission accomplished. Also, I said I'd put "my money" where my mouth is. Not ESEE's money. To even insinuate I'd send it back is ludicrous. Would not have even crossed my mind. Clearly crossed yours though.

I’m going to put it in my collection display case. It is a keeper.

Interesting stuff. A BK2's edge and grind is thinner then that of a Esee-5. I wonder how the test would turn out if the Esee-5's were ground thinner or the BK2's thicker. Food for thought.

Years ago I had to higher end knives (One very hyped) with close grinds and I smacked their edges together to see what would happen. Both edges dented and looked the same to my naked eye. Wish I had had a camera with video back then. It was hard to smash them together, thats for sure.

If you wanna sell off the 5 shoot me an email. Im needing a new project and would give it lots of rehab. Feed it, walk it twice a day and make a nice leather bed for it.

I just finished the second video. The BK2 has 2 big dings where as the Esee-5 has 4 smaller ones. Would make someone think that you changed where you were pounding on the Esee-5. I think you should do it over! :p

Seriously though, you asked: "Any questions?" I have one. Will you be sending the Becker back to Kabar for Evaluation. Not warrenty, but evaluation to help improve the product? IIRC Tooj has said that he likes to Evaluate damage even out of warrenty.

You are one sick bastard. I could never do that! Thanks for taking one for the team to show us these results...

It is my understanding that edge geometry plays a bigger role in these types of strength tests than even the steel type. How do the BK2 and ESEE-5 compare as far as blade thickness and edge geometry? They look fairly close.

What you saw was real. No way to fake it. No do overs.:) Todays video was clearly a "one to one" "divot to divot" video.

If ESEE or Becker want the knives, they are welcome to them. Otherwise, they are in the display case.

I dare ya to do this test with your Randalls

If I had that kind of $, it may be fun to do. How about an ESEE 5 vs Randall Model 15?

To evaluate and improve it into what??

The BK2 is a proven knife that was designed as a hikers companion, to carve and split wood, not to hammer through other knives.

Did anyone tell you you're nuts? And did I tell you that I love the vids and you for having the guts to put your money where your mouth was?

dude just wait until moose gets a look at this, all hell is gonna break loose

what this kinda made me think is if i need a superstrong knife that can handle abuse( like for a soldier) grab an esee 5. if
i just need a nice thick blade for the woods, the becker is plenty good

Here is the thing. I did this for fun. I replied to a post a couple weeks ago and mentioned doing it. Someone said "put your money where your mouth is". So, I did.

Sure it made me sick to take that first whack. But, in the name of science, it was worth it.

Becker is a little thinner.

What made me think to do this was when I went to re-profile the edge on my other BK-2, I could use a double cut bastard file. Tried to do that with the ESEE and it would not even bite into the steel. This lead me to think I could baton an ESEE through the softer Becker.

I've since added the sequel video showing the ESEE in the vise and batoning the Becker. Seems the "Jackhammer" theory is kaput. ESEE is ready for action, Becker is ready for trash compaction.

Wow, asked and answered! Thanks for taking the time to put up that second video.

No further debate from me on this one. My "jackhammer" theory is indeed put to rest.

I have to say that after seeing this test, I am pretty impressed with the strength of that ESEE to say the least.

Balls of steel! Thanks, man.

I hope you're joking.
If you are seriously comparing the value of human life to a chunk of steel, then you are the sick one.

I doubt it. It will not change anyone's oppinion on Becker as it shouldn't. Becker is still a great bang for your buck outdoors tool and it always will be. The BK-2 has more than proven itself in the field. Moose love's his BK-2, and he is one of the few that gets out and uses it and uses it hard as it is intended. It has served him well and is his favorite knife, I respect him for that and I respect Becker knives for making kick ass outdoors tools:thumbup:

I have no problem with the video, they are T.A.'s knives to do what he pleases. If an edge on edge test is what he wanted to see, thats just fine.

When I compare edge strength it is in cutting tasks. That serves a purpous for me as I use my knives outdoors. If I was a swordsman T.A.'s test would benefit me, but I am not.

Kudos to T.A., for having the balls to do a test he wanted to do that would no doubt severely damage both knives.
