ok, refer to this thread and add yourself to this poll. what do you think about batoning with a folding knife:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384353

1. Yes, I think batoning with a folding knife is just fine

2. No, batoning with a folding knife, except in an absolute emergency, is just rediculous.

3. I don't know because I have never done it

4. I don't care since I don't have any folding knives

i have a five inch cs voyager that i use for batoning smaller and medium size branches when i want kindling pieces. personally, i find it easier to just pull out a folder and run through them really quick than to bust out a larger, fixed blade for a piece wood that's not that big in the first place.

it depends on how you baton. for a smaller and medium size pieces of wood you don't really need to whack the hell out of the knife. a few good, solid taps should do just fine.

I bet a whole lot of people who should answer 3 are going to answer 2.

I think it's cool if you know what you're doing, which I don't. But from what I read (mainly posts from Vivi) it looks like there shouldn't be any issues with doing this. I voted for yes.

If you voted for yes, then COUGAR, I am ahead by one point :D

I destroyed a gerber and a kershaw batoning them. I have also destroyed a few spanish folders doing this. I have another kershaw, a casper, that I have done this with with no problem. But I only used it once for this and I pried with it as well. I got lucky IMO

I don't think you offer enough possibilities, I think the answer is somewhere between 1 and 2:
No, I don't think it is just rediculus,
no, I don't think it is terrible abuse,
yes, I would do it only, if I don't have any other tools (a fixed blade in particular) handy.
And, yes, technique matters a lot.

I am sure technique in a folder would matter, hence the reason why I probably busted mine. However, if you don't think it's rediculous and you don't think it's abuse then #1 applies to you.

I think it is abuse, that and prying!!!! But in an emergency i guess you do what you have to do to get by.

an emergency is also when you don't want a broken knife....If batoning with a folder I usually baton small wood and I leave the folder open so that the blade is 90 deg to the handle this way the stree is on the pin rather than the lock...but I only did this a couple times to make sure it could be done it's an issue of the right tool for the right job and axe is for cutting wood and a knife is for slicing in a pinch I'll baton with a fixed blade.... but a folder is risky

By the way, I had to answer 3 since I do still have some folding knives -- don't carry them any more, but I still have some. Of course the whole idea of trying to decide a factual question by poll would be ridiculous, but that's not really what you're trying to do here, is it....

Your right Cougar Allen. I answered #2 and I really should have gone with #3 as I have never batoned a folder. Very perceptive!:D:D:D

I said yes, but I suppose it really depends on the folder and technique. I turned a KA-BAR Mule Lockback into a slipjoint by batoning, but have done it with a BM520 with no problems.

After getting a slap upside the head in another thread by Jerry Hossum, I tried his suggested technique with a full size retribution, and it worked wonderfully. unlock the blade, and baton with the handle at 90 degrees to the blade thus removing any stress from the lock and the stop pin. Of course you need a pretty good size folder to do this effectively with.

I don't think battoning a folder is a good idea, it's certainly safer and easier to do it with a fixed blade (which is why I always carry one, it stays in my day pack when I'm in the city).

If I need a folder that can handle cutting through thick branches, I'll use a SAK or multitool with a saw, it's a lot safer than battoning a folder.

Its so interesting that Cougar made that prediction, to me it reminds me of my sentiments when I read through the prac tac section and see people saying these absurd things about fighting and survival on the street, and then I see them use words like "melee" range for fighting, that comes from video games and its obvious that people shoot their mouths off and have an opinion without having ever experienced anything they are talking about.

I have done alot of batoning and its mystifying that people would offer an opinion without ever having done it. Batoning can be done without damage to the the knife if you have the skill and knowledge to do it. However I have broken fixed blades while batoning. You can break your knife blade, and at lower temperatures it becomes more likely. I consider it a big mistake to risk a knife in an emergency situation in this fashion. There is a right way to do it and you can take the time to learn it but I dont know that it is worth the risk.
