I've batoned smallish wood into kindling for decades with my SAK.

SAK is fine. No damage.

Some woods split via batoning easier than others - fir or pine split easily, eucalyptus does not.

Use your brain, go easy until you know what you're doing, and see what works.

ok, today I batoned with a cheap folder, chinese made. I missed and hit the dam thing right at the pivot and it came apart. I missed my knuckle by millimeters. My bad. I need to practice my aim a little better:foot: I still refuse to use a good folder for this. But I might practice it with some more cheapos, to see if technique does indeed make a difference.

3. I don't know because I have never done it

The italicized portion was not in the actual poll, so I didn't see it. So yeah, I voted for #2.

Regardless, I don't think extensive first-hand knowledge is a requirement to having an opinion. There might be folders out there perfectly capable of batoning, but I've also seen reports of many knives breaking or being ruined. Not worth taking the chance.

Besides, in all my years of living and working outdoors, I've never once had the need to baton anything.
