bear grylls stuff fad or functional?

I will not recommend anything by Gerber.....They have just had too many recalls, too many QC issues and too many design flaw problems in recent years to be trusted at any price point IMO. Lets not forget also that Gerber is owned by Fiskars, who used to make the best dang pair of scissors on the planet. So, for what its worth, Gerber's crap products is Fiskars' fault.

Bear Grylls is a fake. When I saw he was medevac'd while filming his own show...A dang survival show I couldn't take him seriously anymore.

I wish. .. Too bad I'm only talking about dirt... :o

I knew you were. It was just an interesting way of phrasing it. My BK-24 edge really doesn't like those silicates in the Kabar sheath. ;)

As far as Grylls being airlifted out of a location due to an injury, I have no problem. Sure beats being miserable. I really don't want to see another Steve Irwin incident.

If he was seriously hurt, swallowing his pride and calling for medivac was probably the right thing to do. Why should he risk his career or his life just to finish filming a show?

Their insurance providers probably didn't give him a choice either.

His career is to survive the harsh environment in whatever state he may be in at the moment. That is the real lesson behind his and others survival television show not fictionalized enterainment, well, at least that's how the networks sell it. The lesson is not to suggest that in such a harsh environment under such dire circumstance that any person can just call time out, or cut and just quit and everything will be alright. The show is about self reliance, and in that instance, there was none. But I digress.

Supposed to teach how to take care of yourself when stranded in the wilds, but Marmaduke Mickey Percy Grylls repeatedly injures himself or becomes seriously ill when performing among a large crew, often in resort areas.

Sorta' like a driver's training guy who keeps wrecking the training vehicle.

His children, Jesse, Marmaduke Jr., and Huckleberry, probably wish he was more careful.

I was looking at the Bear Grylls monocular, but up-close inspection turned me off to it. It did not look like it would hold up over the long haul.

Every time I hear his name now, I think of the Lava Bridge video.

My guess is that Mr. Grylls is likely very knowledgeable and capable, but that his shows are strictly entertainment and not a representation of what he would actually do in such a situation if he weren't being paid to do it. I could be wrong, but that's my hunch. :)

I had heard that his show was originally intended to be in the spirit of Mears' or Hiddins' instructional work but was edited all to hell to make it look like he was on his own etc. That was wildly successful and Man vs Wild was born.

I have alwsys wondered if he just blundered his licensing /endorsement contract with Gerber and didn't include conditions regarding quality.

I would love to see a user review of the Ultimate Pro because it looks like a big step forwards in quality.

Jason, you really need to research the behavior that Mr. Grylls has modeled on his TV programs. The quality of "his" knives is the least of his problems. Ex: You parachute into a tall tree. You have miles of cordage and strap. What do you do? Why you jump, risking fracture(s) or death. Da' Bear.

In fact, the latest version of "his" large knife ("Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade"), while not a leader in the category, is significantly improved over the first version in design and materials.

He chooses not to take the chute or para cord to make the situation more realistic

More realistic to select the most dangerous of the obviously available options?

I got into quality knives because I was trying to replace a cheap Gerber (Evo) that I received (and used, until it broke) during my times as a boy scout. I still own that knife, and just holding it side by side with some of the knives I own now that were purchased with a little knowledge in hand speaks volumes. As posters in this thread have beaten to death, they make a cheap knife. The Bear Grylls endorsement does nothing to change this fact. Buy a better knife for the same money, you see them all day on the exchange. Do a smidgen of research and you can find many knives (with orange handles to boot!) that will serve you better than anything Gerber has on the market.

Also, I can't believe the fact that he stays in hotels during his "survival" shows has gone unmentioned in this thread for 7 pages. From the BBC:

Just saying.

Yeah, living in hotels has got to be roughing it as far as he is concerned.

I wonder if his mini bar is stocked with fresh urine.

Just about every review (and there have been a lot) of the Grylls Ultimate Pro Knife has been positive. The most common negative comments of this knife occurred when it was confused with the earlier Grylls Ultimate knife or by people who didn't really test the knife but just didn't like Bear Grylls. If you don't like the Grylls logo just paint it black or put bike tyre tubing over it. The most common final thought in the vast majority of quality reviews was that if you can get this for a good price you have got yourself a good knife package. I just bought one new in Australia for $67 Australian delivered to my door in a rural area. By the time postage costs are taken out that is about the equivalent of $40 US. No matter what you think of the man, that is a pretty good functional knife set-up for that type of price.

A long time ago Gerber made some quality knives. It is to bad that they have been reduced to the likes of Barely Grilled

Yes sir I believe it is stocked with fresh urine daily, also Mr.grylls likes it hot from the tap on his resort survival trips lol

I guess many will complain that the movie "A Walk in the Woods" with Redford and Nolte is fake. Oh gee, what a surprise. It's a movie. They probably stayed in hotels too and took helicopter rides to where the filming was being done.

I haven't seen it, but I am really wondering what knives they brought along? :)

i have zero experience with the knife and don't plan to. I did think the episode where he tries to extract honey from a beehive very funny!
