A site selling them in the UK wants $2k, lol. Yeah, I don't think so.

Bear Grylls apparently has serious cred (I'll admit, I'd never heard of him before his show, and I've still never seen it, but his bio speaks for itself), and I have nothing against him. I've never used any of the BG line of knifes, either, so I'm not qualified to talk about their quality. I have had a few Gerber knives, and I've found them to be hit or miss and at best worth what you paid for. (The Dime being the notable exception.)

In the end, apart from owning much better (and more expensive) knives, the idea of carrying a branded "my first survival kit" just turns me off. Yeah, that says more about what I want people to think of me than anything else, but that's my primary reason. As far as I know, the knives are just overpriced and of mediocre quality, though I'm pretty sure a BG ferro rod or canteen works just as well as the next one.

He is a talented athlete and former special forces guy. What he does in survival videos can get other with less athletic talent killed. He has no cred as a survivalist. If he didn't have a camera crew and extraction crew ready to remove him at the drop of a dime, he would have died many times over. After almost every episode he ends up in the hospital. Unlike Less Stroud who is a real survivalist. If you put a giant Elephant Turd into a tee shirt and squeeze out the juice and drink it, you will end up as hyena food the next day, guaranteed. No one should take his shows seriously, including him.

Exactly, that's why I find his show harmful. Young people who don't know any better along with the foolish and impressionable won't benefit from his garbage antics.

Fair enough—like I said, I've never seen it. And anyone who tries to repeat what they see on TV probably deserves what's coming to them anyway.

I recall a kid being lost and surviving a couple days and he credits the survival shows for giving him some sense of what to do (shelter and so forth). The shows aren't a bad thing, but people just need to know that you do not take the chances Grylls' does unless you have no other choice and I don't mean saving you a few hours hiking around something.

The problem with Stroud's shows is that they tend to be kind of boring. But real life would be kind of boring like the military.... boredom with a few moments of terror.

Dual Survivor takes a middle road (sort of), but they certainly lean toward sensationalism to make the show interesting and that is Teti's only salvation.

I have a few of his knives. There is not much to choose from here in AUS due to our strict knife laws and BG Gerber are one of the more affordable and readily available options that aren't super super cheap dodgy Chinese made options. I know there are better knives in the price range IN THE US but it's just not available here and if it is it's usually double or triple the price.

I also have some excellent knives that I keep on my person but for AUD$10-20 they're good little knives to keep around the office, in the car, spare in the backpack, wherever thieving hands or careless co-workers may get to.

So my verdict: Not bad little knives for everyday life but I'll rather my SAK/Leatherman/Spydie.

"In research carried out by a team from Aberystwyth University, who utilised a range of techniques to determine Grylls’s origins, including DNA testing, MRI scans and looking at a photograph of him, it was determined that he is not actually a bear.

Surprised by their initial findings, the team ran a number of further tests to ensure there could be no mistake.

'We couldn’t believe what we were seeing with the intial tests, so we decided to drill down further to try to get to the bottom of it all,” explained Professor Alan McQuarrie, who headed up the team.

We investigated his winter sleep patterns, his opinion of honey and a list of other factors, and while he passed the ‘defacating in the woods’ test, the other results left no margin for doubt: Bear Grylls is definitely not a real bear.'

As a result of the paper which is published today, Grylls’s career could well be in jeopardy. US broadcaster, NBC, who recently signed a deal with the star to host another series of his show, Running Wild, has expressed its disappointment with the findings, and has called an emergency meeting with show producers to discuss what it calls Grylls’s 'orchestrated campaign of deception.'

Mr Grylls himself was unavailable for comment this morning, as he was killing a hippo with a pen."

That almost made me spit Coke on my computer. :D

I’m New on here guys, be gentle...
been reading the comments. The whole Bear/Gerber was just a spin to make money on both parts. I would say the whole Gerber range has problems with them (if using for heavy work). The only thing they are good for really is light work, fishing, weekend camping and Scouting etc. Anything else then Leave them at home.

The original Rob Bayley Bear Grylls Knives Bear used is really where it is at with regards to reliability really - hands down is the ones to go for. I understand now they are worth a Pretty Penny. I myself had good relations with Rob back in my knife making years and was lucky enough to purchase his prototype Bear Grylls knife as i didn't want to wait 3 mounths (at that time) for him to make me one. I asked him what he had to hand right now and he said well if the price is right you can buy this one. To my surprise when it arrived from him it was serial number 1!! So I have no idea what its worth now. Maybe you guys might be able to shed some light as I've been out of the knife collecting game these past 4 years..
Anyways let me know what you think...
