Just a heads up if you have a smart phone... there are many good apps out there which will track mileage and map your routes.
I tend to use Everytrail for hikes and for paddles. For runs, I've been using Runkeeper.
Feel free to post up about your software choices. Might be interesting to see what folks are using.

This works as well: http://www.geodistance.com/

Qeth, I've got a friend who uses Zombies! Run or whatever, and swears by it. I don't really want to listen to zombies chasing me. I'd rather try to maintain a consistent pace.

Most of my running will be done on an indoor track. I suppose I should start warming up for that today...

From what I hear, it's supposed to give you incentives. "Run x distance more to get supplies" and such, which you then use to level up your "base". Increase your "base" level and ward off more zombies, all the while running away from zombie sounds. Breaks monotony for sure :P

I mountain bike 20 miles per week on average, so I'm in.

I was torn on including biking or paddling.
Biking is a bit different from hiking/walking/running because you can (and do) coast part of the time.
You're also covering ground a lot faster. There's a reason triathlons require considerably more biking miles than running miles.

What says the peanut gallery?

I walk 6-13 miles a day at work ..lol does that count?

Can you track it? The intention here was to get folks moving for sustained periods, but I'm not going to discount miles because they're work miles.

I have no problem including biking. Most bikers are gonna get way more than 1.6 mpd, and I figure this just a fun way to add a little accountability to do what most of us need to do anyway. My $.02. :D

I'm in...I do between 90 and 150 miles a month after work and sometimes that much or more at work anyhow so sign me up. :)
We had a walk to the moon contest and every one was issued pedometers. I was surprised to learn I that walked between 8 to 10 miles per day many days.

Bicycling miles count? How about swimming? Thanks Guyon for this good idea.

Even though I'm a swimmer and a lifeguard, I'd rather just walk. Swimming is waaaay slower! But you're right, every little bit helps.
I usually swim between 1500m and 2000m per week, but I could up that by going multiple times a week. Hmm, thinking :)

I'm in! I need to get up and off my fat a$$!
May be a mix of hiking, biking, and treadmill, but I can get to 50 miles!

Biking still kinda feels like cheating to me. After all, you're using a mechanical assist to travel the distance, with a bike. You've got gears, friction reduction, etc, converting and enhancing your effort. Takes significantly less effort to bike 50 miles than to do it entirely under your own power, particularly if you have any kind of decent bike. And, as Guyon mentioned, you spend a lot of time just coasting. By the same token, driving a car would count, if mechanical assists are fair. After all, I have to push on that pedal to make it go, right? That's my 2 cents (or .02 dollars--yes, units matter). If bikes are included, the mileage should count less (like 10 times less--my 60+ year old parents ride 50+ miles per day, but they'd be hard pressed to run 5 miles a day).

Run, walk, or crawl...
The idea is to get outside and move. 50 miles between November 15 and December 15. Pictures welcome.
Successful members will get an official Becker "attaboy" or "attagirl" (that's you, Murph) and the satisfaction of self-mobilizing for fifty miles.
Who's in?

Are we counting walking around doing errands or daily work activities?
