Becker 50-Mile Challenge, (Edit) Hereafter Known as the Move Your *** Challenge

Are we counting walking around doing errands or daily work activities?

I think the original intention was to get us up and off our (speaking for myself mainly here) lazy, fat behinds and get some exercise IN ADDITION TO whatever we usually do. I probably walk 4 - 6 miles per day as part of my work, but my intention is to deliberately up my output by a minimum designated " just for this event" amount of 50 extra miles. Now we have my whole nickle's worth of opinion. :)

great idea! If I manage it I'll even go out and pickup a becker.

Make a list of beckers you'd like to have. Assign the least expensive one to 50 miles, the next to say 55 or 60, and so on. Then you can tell yourself "only x more miles to that BK9" or whichever.

My list is :
50 - BK15
75 - BK5
100 - BK9

And NO, not all three unless I hit 150 miles. :D

So, is biking in or out...make it 100 miles, so that those who "think" we bikers "coast" all the time, can say we coast half the time, and bust our asses on mountain trails and stump jumping, and avoiding all kinds of wild life the other half; a hell of a lot more of a cardio-vascular workout then crawling or doing a slow walk in your orthopedic Earth shoes while listening to that curly headed Richard Simmons on your Sony Walkman.;)

Bicycling miles count? How about swimming? Thanks Guyon for this good idea.

First off, don't knock Richard Simmons. The man was an aerobics genius. :D

I'm game to include swimming and cycling, but I don't think the mileage should be the same.
I mountain bike too, and there's no way a 6-mile ride pushes me as much as a 6-mile run unless all six miles of the ride is uphill.
And if you look at triathlon distances, you always run more than you swim and cycle more than you run.

Y'all come up with some distances for swimming and cycling/mountain biking that you think would push you a little, and I'll happily change this to the Becker Mobility Challenge or somesuch.

Well, gee, as long as this is turning into a more general fitness challenge, I'm gonna go ahead and see if I can't manage to work my way up to 25 consecutive pullups by then as well, so y'all can help me stay accountable to my fitness goals.

Can you measure them in miles? :D

How's about we have 1 mile running= 4 miles road biking, 3 miles mountain biking? I am going off triathlon run to road bike ratios:

Per wikipedia: .

"Intermediate (or Standard) distance; commonly referred to as the "Olympic distance": 1.5 kilometer (.93 mi) swim, 40 kilometer (25 mi) bike, 10 kilometer (6.2 mi) run."

EDIT:

Have it something like this- goal is 50 BP (Becker Points)
1 mile walking/ hiking/ jogging= 1 BP
4 miles road biking= 1 BP
3 miles mountain biking= 1BP

Damn, way to over-complicate things. I love it!
I may even trademark the term "Becker Points."

Using Qeth's ratios, that means, just with one endeavor at a time in mind...

50 miles on foot.
200 miles road cycling.
150 miles mountain biking.
Sound fair? What about swimming?

However, if we did the Becker Point thing, we could combine various activities across the month and earn our 50 Becker Points.

I'd say around a quarter mile to a third of a mile for swimming.

So a one mile swim would earn you 3 or maybe 4 Becker Points? From Wikipedia...

Triathlon races vary in distance. According to the International Triathlon Union, and USA Triathlon, the main international race distances are:
Sprint Distance; 750 meter (.465 mi) swim, 20 kilometer (12.5 mi) bike, 5 kilometer (3.1 mi) run
Intermediate (or Standard) distance; commonly referred to as the "Olympic distance": 1.5 kilometer (.93 mi) swim, 40 kilometer (25 mi) bike, 10 kilometer (6.2 mi) run
Long Course; commonly referred to as 70.3 or the 'half-Ironman'; 1.9 kilometer (1.2 mi) swim, 90 kilometer (56 mi) bike, and a 21.1 kilometer (13.1 mi) run
Ultra Distance; commonly referred to as 140.6 or the 'Ironman'; 3.8 kilometer (2.4 mi) swim, 180.2 kilometer (112 mi) bike, and a full marathon: 42.2 kilometer (26.2 mi) run.

With those ratios in mind, I'd think a mile of swimming should get you at least 4 if not 5 or 6 Becker Points. If I tried to swim a mile, I'd probably need a life vest.

Swimming could use the triathlon ratios too. 0.15 miles = 1 BP

That means 6+ points per mile. I say we give out at least 6 BP's for a mile of swimming then.

I'm in!

But out of curiosity, how is this related to Becker? I think a mod should probably lock this thread.

All this complexity raises the question: WWRSD? (What would Richard Simmons Do?)

You have to carry a Becker knife with you. Duh.

Seriously though? We put a LOT of emphasis on tools and skills in this subforum, but the #1 tool we have is our bodies. (Yes, Murph, I said it. You're a tool.)
This idea was the rationale behind the "Less Is More" thread and this thread, which is an offshoot. Knowledge is key, and the right tools don't hurt.
But you can avoid a lot of problems and extricate yourself from danger more effectively by increasing your fitness. That's my take anyway.

So far, we are at:

1 mile walking/ hiking/ jogging= 1 BP
4 miles road biking= 1 BP
3 miles mountain biking= 1 BP
1 mile swimming= 6 BP

Are there any other distance related activities people want to add? Speak now or forever hold your Reese's Pieces.

Ok Im in. I need the exercise for sure. However as a former hardcore MTB rider trail riding should be 1/2 of road biking. IE if its 200 for Roadbike then 100 for MTB.

Seems pretty fair so far. Want to see what the Colonel and Alnamvet68 have to say about mileage. Moose and Murph might want to add drunken crawling. 1 mile drunken crawling = 25 Becker Points? Too easy?

So you think 2 miles mountain biking = 1 BP? I'd be okay with that.

I believe swimming should also be at a much higher distance requirement....say 300 miles; why you ask, well, one could float on his back and catch a south easterly current in Virginia Beach and wind up in Kitty Hawk, NC (70+ miles) without breaking a sweat, and getting a suntan to boot; what kind of workout is that?

Oh, and yes, I can do 150 miles in a month...and I'll be 65 tomorrow; take that!
