Becker Vs Busse?

I have both and love them both. My grail was the NMFBM and I absolutely love it. That’s being said I don’t think I will ever buy a Busse knife again. I love the styles and the looks. The performance is amazing and the thing cuts like a light saber. The price is very high for what you get. That is the only reason I don’t think I would ever purchase another Busse. On the flipside BK&T knives are some of the best out there. Price is AMAZING for the product you get. I am currently eyeballing the BK-5 and doubt it’s going to disappoint. As an odd addition to this conversation: Lately I have really been paying attention to the makers themselves and the community that follows them. This is just my opinion and it’s not meant to start an argument but I don’t think you’re going to find a better maker / group than the Becker people.
Both of them are great knives. If the KZ is something you really want and you plan for it then I think it’s going to make you really happy. It doesn’t have to be taking sides or one or the other. Another thought is that if you get it and don’t like it you can always re-sell it at a later time. Both of these makers seem to hold their value pretty well.
You could also do what I did and mod the BK-7 to look sort of like a Busse :-)

@ Modified Becker to be Busse-like.... no pic: Calling bullshit ETA 5 minutes

Way too apples and oranges I think. Different markets altogether. There are some busse guys that slum it with us :D. If you got an extra grand, have at it. I'm sure you will love it. As far as steel vs steel well that's something for the scientists. I get along just fine with what I got, and so do the busse fellas. Apples and oranges

You post stalkin be bro

lol.. but yes, I'm giving some thought to dumping almost a grand into a zilla. I fugure the Gucci bag i bought the wife last month gives me a little room to move

Naw, just a guess. It's one of the few things that's kinda outside the Becker realm, and you seem to be the sort to prefer more tactical stuff than the classic HI. Was either that or the Gladius. Those are the two I'd be most interested in too, after all.

If y'all really want to put that popcorn to good work, post a link to this in the Busse subforum, and watch the flames.

lol... I'm not THAT clueless

I have pretty much decided that all my users are gonna be Becker and Condor... but becker doesn't make a kukri that would satisfy my hankerin, and i figure having the best made can't hurt, so busse popped up in my head

i'm playing with 4 different projects right now to keep me busy.

and yes, i don't like traditional crap.... hard users, full tang, made to be unbreakable... HI makes pretty stuff but it's not MY kind of pretty

BTW, if the gladius was under a grand, i'd already HAVE one... that thing is just pure WIN

I told you they had the same shadow and silhouette. :D Nice job man. I seriously think this is a better comparison than anything else I have seen.

Just to clarify, my previous post was about the math of it, not suggesting anything one way or the other.

I've never owned, used, or even held a Busse knife. Only things I know are from pictures and what I've read other people say, so I'm far from an expert on them. But... my personal opinion is that the brand XXX vs Busse is going to be about diminishing returns, just like most other things in life. And I don't mean that in a negative way, just factual.

For example, you need a knife for (fill in the blank) and have no knife. You go to Wally World and see a $20 china-made knife, this is a huge improvement over no knife at all. For another $45 you can get a BK2 instead, Oooooo...... much better. Another $40 will get you micarta scales, a very nice upgrade, but not as big of an improvement as it was going from china-knife BK2.

So for a pile of cash you get INFI steel in a .25" thick knife. Is INFI steel better than 1095-CV, let's assume yes (again, I've never used it), but it cost quite a bit for that improvement.

You see the same thing in backpacks. Pack A will last you 5 years of hard use & Pack B will last you 15 years of hard use. Pack B costs 5x more than pack A, so by simple math you should just by 3 of pack B. But sometimes it's worth it to you for the "minor" improvements you get from pack B.

My $0.02

Both are great knives, the steel in the Busse's holds an edge longer for me than 1095. I've only got three, ones just over 3/16th and the other two are both .22. Beckers are far and away a more cost effective choice and deliver great performance.

No way I would drop that amount on a knife, but that's just me.

If you feel like that Busse is 10X better than a becker then go for it, but if you don't think it's 10X better then is it really worth spending 10X as much?

I think CCMI got it right. The only thing I would add is that it’s like looking at cars. No one really needs a big bada$3 muscle car. A small four-banger from company xyz would last longer, get better gas mileage, and be significantly less expensive. They both can get you from point a, to point b. If I had the cash would I love to be able to occasionally lay a patch on take-off? Hell yeah I would. Do the improvements going from a BK-9 to a NMFBM make up for the price? No; but I wanted a NMFBM and I bought one. There is no way you are going to end up with the Busse if you bring numbers and common sense in to the issue. If you have the coin, get what you like.

Just a thought: I don’t do mod’s for people because I am still learning. For the price of a Busse that size you could buy a few BK-7’s and materials and try / fail / try again and again.

If I was going to spend a bunch of money, I think I would enlist a custom knife maker to build exactly what I wanted. But to each his own. I couldnt bring myself to use a knife that expensive. I'll keep my 1095.

And my money :D

This thread is like the hot chick at the bar with a visible cold sore...... I want in, but the reward ain't worth the risk.

I own both, like both, want both of each company. Somedays I want a burger, some days a filet. Depends on mood and money. I get my dream job, security guard at the grato for Heff, and all the $ I could ever spend and I own at least 2 of every model both companies make.
