whoa...i just noticed "any cal." was banned! anyone know why? i've enjoyed reading his posts on the sharpening forum...so what happens to his beckerhead #?

I have no idea man. I can't find anything indicating why he would be banned either. Very weird.

Yeah, I seen it, but I don't get it. He only has the one reply, and it seems fairly tame (IMO at least) and not really worthy of the banhammer. Curiouser and curiouser lads. He has a comment on his profile from bastid that might imply there was more going on behind the scenes, but Any Cal always seemed to be polite from what I recall.

I PM'd Gus and asked. We'll see if he wants to answer.
Probably something that went on via email or PM, judging by the lack of a red chicklet in that thread.
I see too that he left a Visitor Message for Gus that appears to be edited out.

He is not welcome here any longer. If he wants to come back, I will consider that, but he needs to work it out with me.

Do you mind if we ask what he did? He always struck me as fairly polite so it comes as a surprise that this happened. (Not saying he didn't do anything deserving of the ban, I wasn't there so I couldn't say, but we are curious.)

Derek, I'm positive it was things said outside of BFC. Basically mod sass.

LOL, I read those last two words a little differently the first time.

I imagine it happens. Oh well.

What are these paper wheels everyone is going on about anyways? I feel I have asked this before, but I am not remembering the answer so well. Why are they so great for sharpening?

And how on earth do you get a knife to shaving sharpness that you can then go and hack a 2x4 in half with, then come back and shave with it? Can a Becker do that? Or is it just that I am not that good at sharpening?

ahh, that thread. i was keeping up with that for about 3 pages until i ran out of popcorn and decided to watch drama somewhere else. at least in movies, there's a chance of nudity :D

from the few threads i've read paper wheels are mounted on bench grinders so it's fast at sharpening similar to a belt grinder.

as far as 2x4's are concerned, they're not that hard, so yes i think beckers or another quality knife can do it with a highly polished edge. i've seen some pretty crazy stuff done with knives, especially with knifenut1013's threads showing his knives splitting hair multiple times! and he sharpens freehand no less, no jigs or edge pro kind of rig.

see this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=732635

i suck at freehand sharpening but if i'm drunk enough and it's a full moon i can actually muster enough skill to get a becker shaving sharp :p no doubt knifenut and others can pass that 2x4-shaving test. did you notice he didn't reply in that paper wheel thread? i noticed it's guys like him who don't usually brag about their skills/sharpening rigs that really know what they're doing. they've done it so many times it's not worth talking about from their point of view.

Sorry I didn't take pictures and post 'em earlier, but you know how life can get.

First off the sheath it has is either one of or my very first leather sheath I ever tried to make, so go easy on it. I'm going to remake it now that I have got some skill to it. But the knife itself is I think a little over a quarter inch. A buddy of mine and I watched the movie 'The Hunted' with Tommy Lee and just had to make one so we did. It's mild steel, and we tried to harden it, but I don't think that we really did a very good job at it seein' how it is still pretty soft (for steel). We heated up a piece of 2" flat stock and pounded on it with a hammer on a good sized anvil. After we got the general shape we wanted we started to file and grind out the rough shape of the edge, and it's been a work in progress for a while now, though I do have it sharpened a bit now. I'm sure I could still use some professional help with finishing it. The bottom part of the knife edge (straight section) has a bit of a hollow grind to it with a secondary bevel, and the top part of the edge is probably more of a scanti type (I think). We used a cut off wheel to make the teeth on the spine they really don't do much but they might work for wire breaking. It is well balanced, and I can't through it like in the movie, but it works more like a hatchet and sometimes a draw knife than anything. Over all I like what we made, but I'm sure it could be better.

It looks pretty daggone TOUGH!
Nice work, especially considering how you said you made it. I don't guess you know what KIND of steel it is, though, huh?
