Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Next step in my hatchet restoration project..

Made a saw cut in the top, put the head on, hammered in a wedge I cut fro oakwood with a drop of glue.
(exiting moment).

Cut the wedge off, the result made me very exited so far :)

First attempt to an edge, need to refine it some more but I'm please with it so far, it was a massive reprofiling/sharpening job.
Hurray for diamond stones :D

To be continued :)

Sweet, Knoefz!
Curious how you feel about a tomahawk on a hatchet-hang once you've played with it. I really want straight hafts for tomahawks. Instead of that continuous taper, only have the top 6" tapered, and then straight to the end.

Thanks buddy.
I never had a tomahawk so have no real life comparison. I won't be throwing this ting in trees ;)

Plan to use it for some firewood prepping, splitting kindling and stuff like that. I'll keep you posted, might be a while before I get to use it as in these Covid lockdown times no camping around here....

Oh, that's super close to a wide-blade hammer-poll tomahawk. With a tall eye. I mean not VERY tomahawky, but still in the family, I'd say.
I like tomahawks for tools, not throwing toys. Not that I turned down that prize from a tomahawk-throwing competition, mind you. ;)

Dang, Hawk! Love that red handle with that pristine steel.

Here's this week's detour.
We dug some rotting landscaping timbers out of my GF's yard some weeks ago. Turns out they were actual recycled railroad ties with some hardware left in 'em. Vintage. Then she broke her garden trowel, so...

Now That is F'n Cool! :D

Awesome work!

Can I assume you turned the handle on a lathe?

Thanks, guys.

re: handle
I spent the last 48 hours trying to figure out if I could assemble a working lathe from crap in my basement to turn the handle. Also scouring the interwebz for replacement trowel handles, which it turns out aren't a thing. Finally pulled my head out of my arse and did it by hand on the KMG w/ a 60grit belt. So I shaped the handle after the tool was mounted, more like working on a knife (how I do it, anyway). A lathe would have been faster and more precise, and I wouldn't have botched the drill hole on the first attempt. But anyway.... In the end it was one evening shop session - about what it would have taken anyway. That handle was cut from a log that I THINK I cut from my mom's ancient oak trees a bunch of years ago. Like a dope, I didn't label the logs.

Daizee, you should Google vertica-lathe or drill press lathe. Easy to make, cheap enough to buy.
Perfect for little jobs like that handle.

Nice job on the trowel, too!

Yeah, I saw lots of great ideas.
I don't have a workbench that I'm willing to bolt things down to, and as soon as I do one, I'll want all the interchangeable tooling, etc... Figured it would be most efficient to buy the benchtop harborfreight model, which is apparently a surprisingly good value. Then decided they were all rabbit holes... I even thought about turning an old treadle-powered leather sewing machine into a lathe... also got motors, etc. Mostly don't have room. I do have one drill press that might work for that - the one in the house would be good, but giant cast-iron base... mismash of stuff, you know? Like I have a MT2 chuck that would be awesome for use in/as a tailstock, but it's the old one with spiral chuck teeth - and of course no key. *facepalm*

Might still get there!

Here’s a fun one I got out of my head today :) Year’s ago I spotted a very cool Wayne Goddard Bolo with Becker scales at a fun show. I didn’t immediately claim it and it was gone by the time I returned. Later Ethan told me of that knife and that it had been stolen from Wayne’s shop. Wish I had known. Anyhoo, I was thinking about that Bolo last night and decided today I’d make one as best as my memory would allow :D I like how it turned out! 16 1/4in OA with an 11in blade. I used 1/4in 5160 for my blade and left the mill scale on the flats.
