Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

lit the forge around 11:30 this morning, gifted the below around 4:30.
started with a 1/2" thick x 1.5" diameter puck of 1084.
5 "+ blade, 4.5" axis antler handle, 1/8" at the spine, tapered tang. didn't see the scratch until the flash went off. :(

the pic is horrible - i left the as quenched finish because it's almost royal/carribean blue.

Mid process of a new spearhead - from the male end of a scrap of 3/4" sucker rod
Finished forging just after supper.
Almost done with cleanup grinding.
Tomorrow is scotch Brite belts, HT, and putting the secondary bevels on it

Spine is .28" for the first 8", then it tapers to not much. 1.5" wide at the base and almost a foot of blade. Unsharpened it punched through 1/2" piece of plywood with not a lot of effort.

Agree, cool looking piece.
Are you going to mount it on a shaft ?
It'll be fun throwing it :D

Nothing new recently, but I did just order some of Larrin's new formula: Pop's Procut
Should be a fun alternative to 1084. I got it in sizes for Kepharts and Leukus.

aargh.
I forged an axe head out of a 6" chunk of leaf spring - was profiled, flattened, HT done and working through grits then I saw a small crack.
tried cleaning it up and found out it goes all the way through for 1/4 of the height of the head about 1 1/2" behind the edge. then I found another one about the same distance from the edge coming up from the bottom of the head.

I thought about making a wall hanger out of it, but decided it'll get bobbed and re-forged into a smaller, lighter axe or hatchet.
the cutoff should have enough metal in it to reforge into a draw knife or other blade.IMG_20250604_192225411~2.jpgIMG_20250605_192059608~2.jpg

I grabbed 4 bars too....a bunch of kitchen stuff, some daggers, and a couple field knives, plus a few more

Got it done. Blade is 4.25" tall by 6" deep, top of eye is 39.5", ground to point is 41.
Just over 2.5# total, head is under 20 oz.
Cut down a couple of locust trees - it bites deep.

Cut it off and cleaned up around the crack, then forged the bit and made it pretty.

the piece I cut off got reworked into an ulu/herb chopper and gifted before I realized the camera on my phone wasn't working, so i don't have any pics of it. :(

A couple nearly-done pix before the final ones.
The guys who own the outfitters at the bottom of my hill had to cut down a small stand of Osage Orange on their family property nearby. Osage doesn't really grow here in RI, so this is unusual stuff. They milled much of into boards, but gave me a stump! This piece is K&G stabilized - rugged stuff! It's for one of the two brothers, to match his larger AuK4.5. They consign for me and host me for artist days sometimes. Waiting for a request from the other brother. :)
