Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

That's coming along great, I agree with the kick. I wear a large glove but my hands are skinny. So it depends on the knife, some feel good small like the Kabar short tanto, feels great in my hand, but then so does the large becker grip.
That's fine work, good job! I'll keep an eye out for the finished product

Did some more refining of the handle shape on beachmaster's TM (sorry bud, I just decided to go ahead and make it to what I think will be comfortable); slimmed the handle a little towards the butt and made the fawn's foot a little more pronounced.

Still have to mix a little more epoxy to fill the gap from my little router table mis-step, but overall I'm really happy with the rest of the seam not showing too prominently. To the end of filler, I used a four-in-hand to contour the butt and just put a little bucket (an empty margarine tub) underneath where I was rasping/filing, and viola! Micarta dust ready to mix in.:

From the top...can't even see where the two halves are glued together, really:

In hand (band-aid is from a little slip-up sharpening my Magua on the DMT.....it's only a scratch ;)):

Looking forward to finishing this (after the epoxy, lol) and getting it back to it's owner.

Got that wild hair! Here she is so far...came off pretty good with 80 grit, then 180, then a couple of sponges with no idea but smoother than 180. Still need the guard chopped and a patina. Gotta find them o-rings I have somewhere around here.

Man, that looks good. The camp knife is one I've always liked, but never have been able to get my mitts on one yet.

Thanks Jerry, it wasn't as hard as I thought without Jasco. I peeked and poked around for a while but finally landed it. Still not sure why it got a bad rap. I'm no expert but its fun to use and looks sweet. At a late night very boosy drum circle last year, someone asked me why I had a machete on my leg lol. I just laughed as I pulled it out...if they only knew.

Finally finished up beachmaster's Trailmaster (except for it needs an edge without all the divots.....). Filled the holes last night with epoxy mixed with micarta dust and sanded it back down:

Then chucked a Q-tip into the Dremel to polish the lanyard tube with a little Flitz:

Soaked the handle in Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner, which is mostly mineral oil and beeswax. You can see the repair, barely. Can't really see the seam at all:

Wiped it off, and gave it another...and while I had the stuff out, I hit the handle of this Camillus that I made a sheath for with the Howard's as well.

Didn't get all the paint out of the grooves in the handle, nor could I address the rather significant bend:

Wiped off the second coat and Flitzed the blade a little, but it's basically done. Needs an edge.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, given this was my first time working with commercially made Micarta. Next time I need to be a little more careful with the router table. Feels comfortable in my hand, and the few swings I've taken with it seem pretty good.

That looks really good. I like that a whole lot more than the original rubber grip.

Thank you, Jim. Seems like that TM is a chopper, and needs a choppier sort of handle. I was playing around with your oak handled drop point mini-kuk today. Super fun (and super sharp) blade. Thank you again for your generosity. Maybe we'll see you at the Radeke cabin in May?

GSOM, I know that my dad will carry this knife to every camping trip possible, with even greater pride than he had when it was new. Your work is excellent. I am super impressed.

Awesome. And thank you. It was a really fun project, really....and I learned some things for future projects. Thanks for the opportunity and the confidence that I could get it done (which I was not so sure of myself, at first....).

Glad you like it! I don't know if I'll make it-I'd like to, but I'm trying to fill orders and get stock made for BLADE show-the Concord NH gun show is April 17-18th, though, and I'll be set up.

Great job, Mike.

If you had shown the finished handle without mention of the mishap, I never would have noticed it.

Thank you. That's the great thing about black, I guess....it goes with anything. I can see what I did, but I think most people who make stuff are way more critical of their work than the people admiring it.

You did a great job on that trailmaster.

Thanks!
great job GSOM!

want to try your hand on an old SRK sometime? :D
Thanks for the compliment.

As for the SRK, I think I have to figure out what I can do within a reasonable time period and what it would take for me to become Orange.....I'm not saying "no" categorically, but some other stuff has to get figured out before I say yes. Which as of yet I'm not ready to say.

I just wanted to give you all a heads up, Changes are coming! I have something in the works.

For now, I will leave you with some Spinal Tap as a clue.
