Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

started several this weekend, only broke 2 post hardening.
the first wasn't mine and we only lost an inch of hidden tang, so no biggie.
the second I snapped after the second tempering cycle when I tried to flex out an impressive warp.
the 2 pieces each became an individual cutting implement.
here are the ones that made it home:

Aw yeah!
Lots of exercise in that picture, Vik!

Just picked up some 1084. 1/"x3" 4' long for the baron. We'll see how things go with that.

woohoo!

The ironwood blocks were unfigured pieces from usaknifemaker, so affordable. I've never worked the stuff before so it should be interesting.

Whoops.... Shoulda said 1/8" x 3" x 4' made some plans for it last night. Drew up four or five possibles.

Yeah I was looking there too last night. Seriously thinking about picking some of that ironwood up. I've got a stick tang chef's knife I'm gonna try to make. Let me know how it goes. I'm going to try to get to the local lumber store soon hopefully. They've got a damn good selection of exotic woods.

I love the Knife Wrench, even if it's a Hawk Wrench; nothing like one of those to get the blood flowing :P

Here's a rough kitchen knife proto I started profiling today. I plan to use this to get the geometry right, then get some 10xx under the design once the bugs are worked out.

I've got some more stuff in the shop in various stages of completeness that I'll post up if I remember... no clue and no excuse for why I haven't been posting them as I go. Mais, c'est la Vie.

Working on rehandling an Old Hickory Cleaver with some micarta. I drilled the holes in the tang out to 3/16" and modded the heel a bit to get your fingers behind the edge a bit more than the stock profile.

Handle blocks are rough cut. Next step, fix the front up and epoxy!

Tips on large kitchen knives:

1) don't drop the handle - you need clearance for your hand btw the board and the handle when chopping in a rocking motion
2) an intermediate slope over the tip is an invitation to cut yourself on the back of the tip when your forward hand slips down while press hard on something. Go either full santoku or traditional euro chef profile. I learned this the hard (er, sharp?) way.

Thanks for the tips, Daizee; I'll keep them in mind as I work toward refining (and revising), now I have a few known pitfalls to watch out for which always helps!

up and coming... an old piece in O1 that's been waiting for handles for maybe 3 years. Polished and etched this week. Finish is 600 grit, but the light makes it look all superfance. 3" blade, as you can see:
