Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Here is what I've been working on. I finally found a used 16 for a good price to copy the recurve bk16 prototype. Turned out nice. I haven't used it yet but so far I really like it.

Hot damn!

GSOM, this stuff is subtle, but I think this is the best piece of that piece yet. We'll find out in another day or two when I finish the handle:

Looking forward to seeing that.

Fantastic stuff guys. Love this thread.

Finished up a quick thanksgiving weekend project. Wanted to do something quick and simple for my last scrap of 1095. So it's 1/8" edge quenched 1095. 6 and 3/4" overall with a 3" blade. The blade is a full convex grind, with the spine being ground back convex as well. The knife has a full distal taper and a blended plunge line. All edges have been rounded, and I added a bit of faux forge texture to the handle.

Since the blade is differentially hardened it does have a quench line but I opted for a satin polish instead of etching. Overall just wanted to experiment and play a bit.

Super fun! Love the crowned spine.

I like it....looks very slicey.
Thank you, figured without handle scales it better cut easily lol.

Thank you daiz, sharpened/90 degree spines have their place, but I really like the comfort aspect of a rounded spine. Plus this one I ground back in hopes of improving cutting performance, like a convex blended swedge I guess lol. Didn't want any hard lines.

Here's a close-up of GSOM's wood (yes, it has been hand-rubbed):

I think your intuition was spot on. Damn.

So, one question - perhaps you've already answered this, but I am too lazy to look atm - what do you use for a finish? Good waterproofness? I gotta get away from the wipe-on poly; it's fine functionally and looks ok, but doesn't seem to do justice to the darker woods. Plus, I'd like to find something that makes the - chatoyance - pop, without the plasticky look.

I really need to stop working so much and get back to making stuff. I think I still have another couple board-feet of that Katalox - as well as a small mountain of other wood.

This katalox is good stuff. It's denser than oak, twice as hard, and MUCH more so than walnut, which is my other dark wood alternative.
I've been finishing natural woods with several coats of BLO and then a toluene-free furniture wax ("Classic Wax"). I'm experimenting with sno-seal on one piece, which is better than turtle wax (don't try that).

I like the shiny surface that Tru-oil gives you sometimes, but some woods just don't take it well. Ebony, for example. ugh. The nice thing about that shiny surface is that it's grippier somehow.

I'm still waiting for that lil chunk you were planning on sending me. ;)

you are sending wood out, and it's been hand-rubbed...shouldn't this be in the snark thread? :D

I just received my new BK-16. First thing I did was strip the coating off as I do with all my Beckers. A long term project that I am going to attempt is to replace most, if not all, of my Beckers with wood scales but that will be some time before I can produce something acceptable. So in the meantime, they all have their original scales. This 16 though, I opted to do something different. This was my very first stippling attempt and I think it came out ok. My little girl was thrilled when I asked to see her selection of nail polish but quickly became intrigued once she discovered my intent for it. It will undoubtedly wear off some with good use, but the desired effect was successful. Definitely open to thoughts if anyone has any.

Thanks guys. I got some great suggestions from another thread I started so hopefully I will have more to show before the week is done.

Hey so I just noticed you're in OR. I would like to take a moment and day that I fully expect you to be at the next gathering. At the very least for a day.

I noticed the gathering thread last week, looks like a blast. I certainly hope to be able to attend the next one for sure.
