Beer talk

I also liked the DFH Pangea. Also, the 90 min, 120min, Olde School, Burton Baton, Nut Brown, Red and White, World Wide Stout, and many other's.

I just brought home some Troegs Pils and am drinking that right now. It's pretty good, and it's the first time I've drank it.

Shaolin - I must agree, there are only a few beers that DFH makes that I don't care for.

It's a shame you don't live closer to me, I'd take you down to the brewery. It's only a bout 40 minutes away from me. They do free tours and free beer tasting after the tour for an hour. The people at the brewery are super cool and down to earth.

myright, yeah, I wish I did live closer, lol There are alot of great east coast breweries.

Picked up a 4 pack of Kidd made in Colorado. Very tasty dark beer. Personally I think the US makes some of the best beers in the world. Nothing like the old canoe joke implies. :) thanks for the Hamns ad I remember when they ran on TV. Made my day.

There are some VERY good American beers and not all of them come from micorbreweries. My favorite mass produced American beers are Shiner Bock, Sam Adams and Leinenkugle (sp?) red. Edge goes to Shiner. When I am in Mexico, I stick with Pacifico, Carta Blanca or Sol. Corona tastes like a mixture of battery acid and cat urine to me. I like Urquell, but I kinda like Staropramen a bit better. Stella is good stuff, but I had some Jupiler when I was in Brussels and I like it better. As for Germany, well everything I have had over there was good. Of the stuff that is generally available over here, I prefer Spaten Ex and Bitburger Pils because that is what I drank a lot of in Germany when I actually knew what brand I was drinking...lol. . I hate to admit it, but my favorite Canadian is just plain old Labatts. After messing around with Moosehead, Milson Golden and Export in my youth, I discoverd Labatts when my ex-wife was in school at Syracuse.

Right on with the Leinies Red probably my most bought beer for my home fridge. I shouldn't admit that since I live in Stevens Point home of Point beer. ;)

Today, got the grill going. My brew for the day is a Ballast Point Sculpin, if you like IPAs, seek this sucker out, you will not be disappointed, at all. Very very tasty!

Shaolin - sounds good!

My plan was to drink the 90 minute DFH I've got while grilling, but we are getting dime sized hail and wicked thunderstorms right now.

Enjoy your brew everyone.

Had the Stone Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout last night.........WOW!!!!

That is one incredible brew!!

thick and dark, malty choclatey, oatmeally, delicious!!!

anybody who likes stouts should seek this one out!!
I think I like it better than Tatonka!

There's some interesting sounding beers in this thread.

Unfortunately the only American beers I come across around here are Budweiser, which tastes like toilet cleaner and Sierra Nevade Pale Ale, which tastes very nice, if a little sweet.

It would be interesting to compare some good US ales with some good English ales, if it were possible to get them in the same place.

I've just finished a bottle of Black Sheep Ale, from Yorkshire, http://www.blacksheepbrewery.com/
which is a lovely brew!

I discovered something interesting in a tasting session a while ago, that Old Hooky from the Oxfordshire Brewer Hook Norton http://www.hooknortonbrewery.co.uk/beers_home.html is almost indistinguishable from your typical Belgian ale, like Chimay Red.

Cheers!

Occassionally, there are beer clubs and/or pubs that put together taskings of 'REAL ALE'. Always good time. Many large beer/wine/liquor stores here (denver/boulder) , have a large selection of UK based brews. 50 or so options iwth some of your easy to find stuff, i.e. bass sam smith, etc. ; some not so easy, e.g. bishops finger; and some rare ones (in the us at least), e.g. sheep mentioned above.

It is all a matter of taste so comparing them isn't as fun as enjoying them and identifying the deltas between them. LIke anything, a brewer that really cares shows it in the product. Quality is quality regardless.

Where to start? Leinenkugels Sunset Wheat, sweet but refreshing so I guzzle a lot of it. Blue Moon is quite good for a mass produced "heffeweisen".

Yuengling in Virginia is really good, especially on tap.

Tsing Tao is a good Chinese beer that has a German recipe and is brewed in Qingdao, which was ceded to Germany from 1897 to 1914 so it has good roots. Try it, it is available in most groceries.

Theakstons is a very good pale ale from England but I have not managed to find it in the US yet, very smooth and refreshing. Newcastle Brown Ale as mentioned, Old Speckled Hen too.

Please try a Belgian "Kriek". They have flavors like cherry or raspberry which sounds gross but it is truly delicious. One of the brands found in the US is Lindemans, which is ironically not my favorite. In Belgium they serve Kriek in its own glass, a round goblet which is placed in a wooden holder, cannot be placed on the table as it will fall over.

If you ever get to Washington, DC try the Brickskeller. Its in the Guinness book of records, they claim to have over 1000 different beers in bottles from all over the world but it can be hit or miss, they run out of specific brands at times because keeping up that list must be hard work.

I am now going to have a Heineken since I have worked up a thirst just thinking about this. Cheers!

Joe, you have similar tastes to mine. when in Canada, try to search out Creemore Spring. This beer was a small independent craft beer, from Creemore Ontario, but was bought out by Molson a while back. They said the beer was so good, they were going to leave it as it was.

I go to one bar every 3 months when I get a hair cut and drink draft Fullers ESB. This is by far the best draft I have found in Canada. I am from the UK and used to sell beer. In fact I have been selling beer for nearly 40 years. I had my own pub for 17.5 years.

I have a couple of cans of Staropramen on Thursday and tonight was Lowenbrau Blue. Pilsner Urquel features regularly.

On my pub's website I used to say we sold Budweiser and it proved conclusively that Americans can't brew beer! ;)

I also have a bottle of the 12th Annv. to be had shortly.

db,

checkout New Glarus, Central Waters, Lake Louie, Tyranena, and Sprecher.

Shaolin thanks, I know about New Glarus and Central Waters, but not the others. CW Makes a Coffee stout that I really like alot and I'm not even a coffee drinker.

A little trivia for everyone. Turn a can of Red Dog upside down, what do you see? Look for a standing frog on a can of Old Style, what is he doing?

I tried that this weekend as well, very good stuff. I plan on hanging on to a couple, they should age perfectly.
