Beer talk

Sam Adams Cherry Wheat tonight. One of my favorite from Samuel, nice after a 12 hour day on my feet in the sun.

Today, a Jolly Pumpkin Noel De Calabaza, very tasty, very good example of the style.

I augmented the contents of my fridge tonight with Guinness. So it's Black Cherries tonight, Guinness over Cherry Wheat.

Age beer? Does beer age in the bottle like wine?

No! I'm no expert on beer, except on the consumer side, but almost all beer is better fresh. I have been known to haul out a bottle from the back of the fridge and drink it without ill effect but its not supposed to be good.

I've heard that there are a few, very few, that benefit from bottle aging but those seem to be those very high alcohol content trappist ales and such.

Yes, just about any beer 7% or higher does very very well aged. Barleywines, BSDA, BSPA, RIS, IS, IP, DIPA, many do.
WOW I didn't know that. I do tend to drink up the better beers I get rather quickly. I'm guessing that is for bottles only and not cans. I can say I have had a few beers that haven't aged well at all. :) :) This is why it is best to bring my own beer when staying at the inlaws. :)

This thread rocks. I am going tomorrow to pick up a rack of Westvleteren 12's to go with my 2 racks of 8's from two weeks ago. It's a far drive buts it's way cheaper than any store. I am in Germany for a while and miss my American craft beers.

Westy 12 definitely deserves it's rep, excellent Belgian. Yeah, I have several barleywines, Belgian strongs and stouts that are in a dark corner quietly getting better and better :D I am also laying down the Stone Vertical Epics (I started a year late though with the 2003) I'm really looking forward to an epic tasting in 2012!

Does not matter if it's in a can either. Some DIPAs taste better mellower if cellared properly for a couple of months, since some are hop bombs, lol I had a Bell's HopSlam sit for a year and also gave one to a friend and it still was a hop bomb, lol I usually let the 9%+ ABVs sit around longer. Stone's Double Bastard does quite well after a year, for me. I've had it fresh and it was tasty, but I like it alot better after a year.

Both are freakn' awesome brew's, enjoy!

I didn't drink beer until 5 months ago, and I'm already a budding beer snob :p I've not tried a boat-load of varieties yet but my experience has led me to darker beers. Most pales just don't have the full-bodied, thick flavor and consistency that I appreciate.

In my limited experience, Sam Adams is a good brand for a regular-drinking, staple type of beer. Their Black Lager is a can't-miss to my palette. I recently had a Tadcaster's Oatmeal Stout and thoroughly enjoyed it, as well. Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat is always delicious; sadly it's the only variety of Leinie I've found available here in Abq.

I'm really looking forward to the fall and the new crop of beer varieties it will bring  I'm ready for an end to this "summer time, pale ale" nonsense the stores are currently peddling ;)

If you really wanna torture yourself try Sam Adams Summer Ale. It's like lemon scented furniture polish diluted with some beer!

There was a lonely 6 pack of Tyranena Bitter Woman sitting on the shelf so I just had to pick it up today. Sam Adams black was on sale so I picked that up also. I guess I have to decide what to have first. I have 1 bottle of Kidd so I'm kind of thinking a taste test between the kidd and Sam am might make for a nice Sat. afternoon. :)

Well as much as I wanted an afternoon of drinking beer the honey do list made that impossible. Tired hot and thursty I just grabbed a Bitter Woman, WOW. Very tasty the hoppy grapefruit kick was just what the Doc ordered. I think I may just have to have another. If you see this beer, get it. Thanks to Shaolin for suggesting this brewery.

Anytime. That is a tasty IPA. I like everything I've had from Tyranena, and I've had almost everything from them, lol

I found another American bottled beer!

Sierra Nevada Summerfest. It say bottom fermented on the label which out to make it a lager but it has the fruity notes of an ale. More malty than hoppy, very nice and decidedly more-ish. I followed it with a canned Greene King IPA which was definitely a step down. Less overall flavour and distinct tinny notes!
