Benchmade griptilian thread!!!

I got one of the limited production M2 steel RSK's and it's been great. I can't imagine a better design for EDC. It's like the Glock of pocket knives but with a more comfortable handle. I'm really happy that people are making more and more versions too. There's even kind of a fixed blade over at aeromedix. Sweet knife.

This is in my EDC rotation - it's one of my favorites. No complaints at all. Now I'm planning to get a 551.

Now that I have a daughter, I really don't have much time for knife collecting, hiking or outdoor survival anymore. So I just tend to grab what is practical and always works, and throw it in my pocket. Primarily, that knife has been a large M2 Rittergrip for the last year or so. Talk about an outstanding knife.

The implementation of the Axis lock is much smoother than my M2 BM710. And personally, I find the large Griptilian to much more secure and comfortable than the BM710. The Rittergrip’s grind is wickedly efficient for a tactical folder, and the M2 is simply outstanding. I was a little worried about using M2 ground that thin, but I haven’t had a chip or rip in the blade yet. I’m normally a big S-30V fan, but the abrasion resistance of the M2 is in a league above S-30V. It’s a crime that there aren’t more M2 knives out there.

I also have a Cabelas D2 Mini-grip, but truth be told, I’m not too fond of it. The blade is great, but the handle is just too small for my hand. I can barely operate the Axis lock with one hand, without the knife slipping out of my hand. I prefer the Delica4 for when I want a smaller folder.

very nice guys...

Lavan, cool, I think I remember seeing that one on KF? didn't you ahve a thread for it? great look, and well done considering your not a knife maker...came out nice!

I just got a Mini Grip a little over a week ago and am very impressed. It's a wee bit more cramped in-hand than my Spyderco D4, but the lock and smoothness is simply amazing. The knife has me picking out my next Benchmade already. I also really like the blade/handle ratio, as it has a bit more cutting edge than my similarly sized Spydies.Great knife:thumbup:

yeah some people do not like the size of the mini, I have owned 5 different variations of the griptilian, 1st a few 440C models, then 2 154cm models, now this D2 version... but never a mini...I guess with this type of handle a smaller knife might be uncomfortable...not sure, I own smaller knives with G10, Ti, and aluminum handles that feel fine even though they are small...

Huh, that is odd that you can't manage the mini-grip.

I'm 6'5" with hands so big that I struggle to find gloves that fit and I EDC a mini-Rittergrip and have absolutely no problem handling it. Honestly, my hands are so big that I've tried every 2XL glove Cabela's carries and NOTHING is big enough for me ... sigh.

My fingers tend to use the clip as a key part of the grip while opening, but opening it, rolling it for use, and then closing it - all one-handed - is really no problem for me. I do it without thinking. OK, I'll admit that the fullsize grip, with the bigger handle, feels better in my hand, but I EDC the mini because the size is so much more convenient (pocketable).

That is actually one of the reasons I like the grip handle shape so much. They are built such that the butt-end is smaller so I can comfortably grip it with my stronger thumb-side of the hand, not the entire hand, so they feel as comfortable in my hand as they do in my 11-year old daughter's hand. There is nothing more uncomfortable as a wide handle-butt sitting somewhere in the lower 2/3's of my palm.

Worst knife I have ever owned. I have a thread on this forum about the griptilian. The one I have is a sheepsfoot style half serrated blade in 154cm steel. The serrations sheared off in the first week of use. I had to sharpen the blade at least once a week to keep it sharp.

The lock is excellent. That was the only part of this knife that I liked. The spydercos I have hold up far better. Maybe it is the steel; maybe I got a bad one, but having a "bad benchmade experience," seems to be a pretty popular phrase on knife forums, even on benchmade's.

Maybe if I could get one in D2 steel with no serrations, I might try another one, but I find serrations much more useful in my line of work than a plain edge.

I am a member of the benchmade forum and when I got on their website to discuss the issue, I got hammered by their members, so screw them, no more benchmade's for me.

Have you tried a fully serrated Spyderco Endura? Best knife ever. And VG-10 is much, much better than 154CM. You only have to sharpen the blade every six months or so

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. Just got my new fixed 151 model in the mail today and love it! I have only got to test it out on a few things so far but it seems to have a very sharp edge from the factory. The knife is very well balanced and is very strong, being made with the 154cm. Anyone else have one of these or have an opinion on them?

Yes, I have been using endura's for over ten years. Great knife. I love spyderco's products. You are right, I only have to sharpen my spyderco's every six months or so. Right now, I am trying out a Native III for work and really love it. I think VG-10 is one of the best steels on the market.

I have not noticed any overwhelming superiority of VG10 over 154CM. I find them both to hold an edge well.

Exactly how you can show the superiority by comparing fully serrated blades is somewhat of a mystery to me. How does one differentiate the cutting effect from the sawing effect and from the different shapes of the teeth? Too many variables.
