Benchmade or Spyderco

Spyderco has some beautiful designs but, they can take up more pocket real estate. That is my main complaint against most of their knives.

If you like to tinker, go with Benchmade. All of my Benchmades got perfect with sufficient love and attention. On the downside, all of my Benchmades needed love and attention to flourish.

That statement is quite true. My Anthem needed some attention since BM wasn’t able to perfectly center the blade. Had to swap the bearings to PB washers to recenter the blade by grinding one washer thicker that the other. Now that Anthem is perfection with a deep carry. My 940-1 screws was protruding on the other side of the liner... had to sand them down.

That being said, with BMs, it’s like Russian roulette, regarding perfect QC. Not so much with Spydercos except the wonky grind on... Maxamet and Rex45, BUT it’s really sharp even scary sharp out of the box.

Spyderco is toyota
BM is Honda

I have owned eight Benchmades over the years, I own six now. I've owned 12 Spydercos (not including Byrd) and still own eight. I've never had any real problems with any of them.

When I pull them out and look at them and play around with them, some of the Spydercos are my "favorites" of the two brands. But none of them get as much carry time as my Benchmade 550HG Grip with G10 scales.

Buy what you want, keep what you like best, carry what works for you.

Which models do you have?

I have a pm2 in camo, a benchmade griptillian 154cm, spyderco manix 2 brown g-10 with dlc, spyderco tenacious black g-10 with dlc, a couple kershaw's and a couple mora fix blades and I am looking into getting either a pm3 or mini griptillian. Small collection but just getting into collecting them

ZT is probably feeling sad for being excluded from the discussion

*and my choice is Spyderco, they’ve allowed me to try out steels I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.

I have been interested in ZTs but they seem to be pretty expensive!

I prefer Spyderco for a couple of reasons but one of the big reasons is Sal Glesser.

How many companies are you aware of who's CEO/owner will respond to you directly to address your issues and make things right?

Is it new? I have found that the Axis Lock needs a break in period.
I have had it for a couple years, it's a griptillian 154cm and it has just recently became just a little bit sticky, I have put graphite on it and it helped a little but didn't totally fix the problem

I've had issues with all of my Spyderco knives. I haven't owned a Benchmade, yet. I want a Bugout.

I do love my Spyderco PM2, even with her flaws.

Edit to add: I love Spyderco, and want more Spyderco knives. I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing the brand, because I'm not.

That is true! I asked a question recently over in the Spyderco subforum here on BF and imagine my surprise and delight when the answer came directly from Sal Glesser! What a great guy!

I bought a lot of Benchmades in the 90s, but once the 2000s rolled around I have bought many more Spydercos. Occasionally I look at Benchmades but nothing has been interesting enough to buy.

Both are good, but Spyderco offers far more models that pique my personal interest.

Benchmade is doing some good stuff with their Custom Shop options nowadays, but overall, I still feel that Spyderco offers more variety in both design and steels.

I say buy either with confidence :thumbsup:

I tend to like the ergos and offererings from Spyderco, but man, a broken-in axis lock is just so freaking smooth. Buy whichever speaks to you most. They’re both very good.
