Benchmade or Spyderco

I buy Spyderco partly for function and partly because they offer some models with very nice steels. I like Benchmade and there are a couple that I still own and carry but for the most part my Spydercos have pushed away the Benchmades that I used to have. I have no complaint about either brand and they both make good knives so buy what you like.

Benchmade and Spyderco seem to be very popular right know, I am torn on which I like more. They both seem to have there ups and downs, let me know which brand you guys like more and why!!

Both of them have been very popular for several decades. If you have a like/dislike for the hole in the blade, Spydercos are out. Benchmade's Axis Lock is a smooth and easier mechanism for use in the field. You can't go wrong with either well established knife companies. it's simply a matter of personal taste.

Oooh .. I didn't notice the why.
I have 6 spydercos in 6 different steels.
They have become the only knife I carry now.
Btw I didn't like them at all till I finally bought 1.

I don't dislike benchmade in fact I really like the look of some of their knives.
I'm just hooked on the spyder.

I feel spyderco has better design and more options. I have been looking at other brands just to try something different. Been a big fan of last few Lionsteel knives, absolutely worth the money and set the bar for quality.

My opinion, my experience...

Taiwan Spydercos are good steel, good blade centering and no issues.

Golden Spydercos have had blade centering issues, chippy factory edge and stiff blade action.

Benchmade has been poor fit and finish around axis lock (scales) and feels cheap. Screws have been coming loose on my last purchase with just a few pocket carries.

They are both great and I have knives from both companies that I really enjoy. I prefer Spyderco overall for a few reasons.

1. The compression lock (specifically in the PM2) is my favorite lock.
2. Their blades are generally better for cutting things YMMV.
3. Superior quality control (based on personal experience and reputation).
4. Better ergonomics while being slimmer in the pocket (IMO).
5. I'm a fan of Sal and Eric.
6. My BM 940 has been through two pairs of omega springs.

One thing I will say in Benchmade's favor is that I really like that they will replace your blade on request (for a price). I had a used Griptilian with a trashed combo edge blade. The tip was broken, the serrations were terribly abused, and I think someone used a bench grinder to sharpen it. $35 plus shipping and a couple of weeks later and I had a brand new plain edge blade and a new pocket clip.

I think every knife enthusiast should have at least one PM2 and a Griptilian.

Spyderco. Don't like small parts breakage knocking a knife out of commission ala Omega springs. Also don't dig blade wobble.

I like them both, and I can totally see why some of their models will go down history as classics(Grip, Osborne, Para, Delica, etc).

In terms of QC, I favor Spyderco more since I have less grind issues with them, but YMMV.

From a collector stand point Spyderco puts out a greater variety of designs that fit a wider variety of uses. But from a pure edc standpoint I marginally prefer benchmade.

Agree I own more Spyderco’s than benchmade but for the last couple of years I edc my benchmade more .

All my Benchmade are perfect, and I EDC them most of the time (Loco, Griptilian mostly). I used to like Spyderco more for many years, but the trend changed in the past 5 years. I do love my Shaman tho.
But to answer your question : Benchmade, Black class.

Benchmade is missing out.
They need to offer a FFG blade on their products.

If Spyderco combined the D’Allara 3 with the pocket clip and lock from a PM2, they would have an amazing product. Benchmade would be kicked to the back of the bus.

Both companies have some great products and some that are just ok.

I like my D’Allara but I reach for a Griptilian or a SAK more than anything else.

I've had problems with BM..trying to get them sharp...even sent one in to C.S. for sharpening, and it came back dull.
Spyderco? You don't have to send them back for anything... I'm one big fanboy of this company...

Spyderco will likely have the edge in longevity. I have both and enjoy both, but I know my Spyderco's will likely last forever:

I like their OpFocus program.
I prefer to pay $100 or less, and there are a lot of Spydies in that price range.

I pretty much stopped buying Benchmade when they went to MAP pricing.
I have an adequate selection of Grips, and a handful of other Benchmades. I'm good.

I guess that would be Spyderco for me as I've carried my police for over 30 years and have never owned a BM knife.

I will never own another Benchmade. QC was terrible on every single one I owned. A great warranty is not a substitute for poor QC.

I also don't like their political actions, but that's a story for another section.

Meanwhile, I love Spyderco.
