Benchmade or Spyderco

I can't speak for Benchmade since I've never owned one, but I've had a positive experience with Spyderco. Spydies can be quite pricey, but the quality will indeed remain long after you forget the price. They're excellent EDC knives.

I’ll take this grip over any of my sprint PM2 or Manix I own . I’m not hating on Spyderco but to say that Benchmade knives all come with poor QC is not correct.

When we compare USA made Spyderco’s to Benchmade both companies are even I’ll even say Benchmade takes them . I won’t give credit to Spyderco’s for Taiwan knives QC unless Spyderco’s owns the company . Whoever is making them gets the credit. Not the middle man .

Spyderco will likely have the edge in longevity. I have both and enjoy both, but I know my Spyderco's will likely last forever:

I'm drooling over here

I will never own another Benchmade. QC was terrible on every single one I owned. A great warranty is not a substitute for poor QC.

I also don't like their political actions, but that's a story for another section.

Meanwhile, I love Spyderco.

This is an interesting take, and really can be applied to many companies... Cold Steel, Buck's overseas stuff, etc.

That would make for a discussion for another thread. (Until it got locked down by page 2, likely)

I've had many of both companies' offerings over the years, and have trouble finding a Spyderco product I want to keep. Got lots of Benchmades still though.

Not a quality or material thing, I just don't cotton to the "designed-around-a-hole" thing. I do still have a Jess Horn model though.

Kind of an ironic note... my favorite Benchmade is a Mini AFCK... sporting a big ol' hole opener in the blade.

And I have never once purchased a Benchmade with QC issues, and have never broken a spring in an Axis lock. Weird, I know.

This all boils down to whether you prefer apples over oranges. These brands are two different animals. Having said that no brand is more innovative than Spyderco .

I concur. Benchmade seems to prefer to rest on their laurels knowing that they get a large percentage of sales from B&M stores from the people who know little of knives and/or those who have heard of the brand. Most B&M stores sell at full retail.

I rarely see Spyderco's at physical stores, and if they have them they are also full retail and usually only the delica and endura.

I feel Spyderco is designed more for the knife enthusiast. I love their ergonomics, variety in steel, etc.

I have (as in above pic) 4 Golden Spydies and all came perfect. Zero blade play, zero issues. I love both the CBBL and Compression lock.

Two words: Axis Lock. They are both overpriced, but the Axis almost makes it seem worth it. My gut reaction to every Spyderco I have picked up is sticker shock. So I have a couple of Benchmades. There are maybe a couple more I would try. Never an issue with QC, never broke an Omega spring.

I own and love both. They both offer great deigns, steel choices and have huge aftermarket parts available.

That being said I give the nod to Spyderco for taking more chances with new and different designs (love some, hate some), more steel choices for the same model and the best deployment of any knife via the Spydiehole. Why do you think Benchmade offers a Spydiehole on some models?

I never had any QC problems on either that a little break in and tweaking couldn't solve.

AC0B7B95-A8AB-4102-B328-2DC5CBFD9410.jpeg I love them both and have 8-10 of each. (I’ll count when I get home.)

I am bothered by Spydercos lack of support. It is really easy to break the tip off a PM2 (and many others). You can’t get them to replace the blade. Benchmade its $30. But half the time they decide to do it for free. I am an auto mechanic and outdoorsman so I put knives to the test, occasionally.

I like their OpFocus program.
I prefer to pay $100 or less, and there are a lot of Spydies in that price range.

I pretty much stopped buying Benchmade when they went to MAP pricing.
I have an adequate selection of Grips, and a handful of other Benchmades. I'm good.
Spyderco has gone to MAP pricing also. Are you going to stop purchasing Spyderco too?

Spyderco - Benchmade

7 - 1

The one Benchmade I have(Mini Grip in 20CV) had omega spring break after a few months and also had to be pretty heavily modded to tweak out side to side blade play due to the stop pin beeing to long.

Benchmades, at least the ones with axis lock, are also pretty hard to take down and put together again.

So Spyderco for me.

Are you familiar with the Spyderco OpFocus program?

There are no Benchmade offerings under $100 anymore, except maybe the models I already have.
