Benchmade VS Spyderco

Ok, i confess, i have one Benchmade, but it's a beater that i give to my loved one's when they need a knife. Just as a precaution so they won't loose one of my Spyderco's :D

Seriously, not jumping on the bandwagon here. Spyderco was my first love but since picking up my last few Benchmades, my allegiances have shifted. I love AXIS locks, blades made from D2 and M2, and automatics. I still own a few Spydercos though, and will continue to buy every nice one that comes out!

I do like both companies for sure.
But I have to say that I prefer most Spyderco knives over most Benchmade knives.
The two main reasons are:
1) IMO, Spyderco knives actually perform better when it comes to cutting.
2) IMO, Spyderco knives are more comfortable to use.

I would also ask those who prefer Benchmade's folders (with the exception of the autos and bali-songs) would you still prefer them if they did'nt have the Axis-lock?

In other words...I think that if you took away the Axis-lock, most Benchmade knives are rather average.

Allen.

It's not as much the Axis lock that does it for me but instead the fit and finish. I'll take a liner lock Benchmade over a compression lock Spyderco any day.

Benchmade knows how to do liner locks really well.

The original TSEK, the 910, the 905, the 880 all are great knives.

So yes, I would still prefer Benchmade without the Axis lock.

I agree on the Compression-lock, I just don't like it at all.

But I think that Spyderco's liner-locks are every bit as nice as Benchmade's liner-locks.

I like the Axis lock and stronger handles. I have a 525 and a 705, both built like tanks. I've handled Spydercos, but never bought one. Nothing against Spyderco. I like Benchmade's customer service, strong construction, and bladeshapes. After I received my 525, it's my EDC.

That is a tough choice. I like Spydercos flat ground blades. My new Para is my favorite EDC beating out my Rittergrip. I like Benchmades F&F. None of my Benchmades came with any blade play, many of my Spydies have vertical play. Benchmade also offers low ride clips. Spyderco seems to refuse to do that. I think the new Caly 3 UKPK will blow Benchmade out of the water for me so I vote Spyderco.

The Spyderco logo is a spider.

The Benchmade logo is a butterfly.

Spiders catch butterflies in their web and eat them.

Any questions?

Seriously though, I love both companies. I think my favorite knives from each company are about equal. I love my Manix, and I love my Skirmish. I love my 806D2 and I really want a Black Military. I love my Griptilian, and I love my Pacific Salt. However, there are many more Spyderco models I want than Benchmade models. Overall, I have a slight preference for Spyderco.

Depends on what kind of user you are, I suppose. Spydercos seem much more utilitarian while Benchmade's nicer knives are custom like in quality. For my money (and there isn't a lot of it,) I'll take spyderco because I can't afford to buy fancy knives I'm afraid to use and lose. Spyderco puts performance above fit and finish, IMO. The axis lock is fantastic, though.

I like Sal's input and they have great forums, my second locking knife was a delica, but I'm loyal to the butterfly :)

Hell of a chioce to be made. Personally, I love em both. I would have to say that over the years, spyderco has done better with thier designs overall. But I feel that bm is slightly better in over all quality. The afck is my all time favorite, but there are more spydercos that I want to own than benchmades. In the end... I simply can not choose one over the other.
