Best Chopper for Vehicle Under $80?

Gerber/Fiskars axe (full size) and a decent machete (Tramontina, Condor/Imacasa, Hansa, or similar).

I used and kept in my truck a saw that I think would be superior to any knife for getting small trees or large limbs out of the way. It is similar to this.

Since we are talking about carrying it in a truck, a small axe is also great. I had rather have either for getting a 6 inch limb or small tree out of the way.
For me, a knife just wouldn't "cut it.":D

Jerry

I just ordered the Condor Golok--made sure to get the new model with FULL tang (completely separates the handle into two halves or scales). $60 with leather sheath and after shipping. Just discovered New Graham has 'em for just over $56--figures...

BK-9 is my pick from your list

Something that can break down big pieces of wood

$80 is getting you in the neighborhood of a pretty nice axe. Wetterlings Forest and Hunters axes can be found for around $80, but you'll have to factor in S&H usually. Either will fit behind a bench seat.

I would have to say:

BK9
KaBar Cutlass Machete

An ax isn't a bad idea, and the corona or silky saw option is another great idea.

Finally right at the bottom I see the Kershaw Outcast mentioned.
Don't forget the Condor Boomslang or Speed Bowie
Ka-bar Grass Machete
...and I've never handled one myself but I hear awesome stuff about the Fiddleback machetes, though they sell for $100

in my blazer is a hardware store axe I bought years ago after a late-night wheeling outing where we got stuck until dawn and it has lived in my daily driver ever since. along with that is a gerber hatchet which has also served me VERY well and 2 wal-mart shovels plus a bunch of chains, clevis', 2 come-alongs, a 60" high-lift jack, and 3 tool boxes with enough tools to just about total dismantle anything or put it back together when need be. because I work on an army base I can't have knives over 4" (but axes and hatchets are ok, go figure) so my BK9 and cold steel kukri machete have to stay home otherwise they be in there too with a couple guns. I used my cold steel kukri machete on a "man campout" where we stayed in what I would call a spot rather than anything resembling a campsite so I had to get to work with the kuk clearing some limbs and getting some wood for the fire and I was amazed at how well that thing choped. I am so glad I bought that thing.I suppose I pretty much have all my cutting/chopping roles filled with what I have but I'm still looking to buy an ontario SP8, cold steel special forces shovel, and a ka-bar grass machete.

I had one of these as my go-to camp knife for maybe 10 years and I beat the hell out of it and them some including accidentally glancing it off a steel fire pit and some concrete. it was a fire poker, hatchet, knife, club, pretty much anything and it just kept going. probably the best value I've ever seen in a knife. it was still salvageable but I decided to give it away to a friend who likes to work on knives as a hobby and I got my becker BK9. I might just order another since they're so stinkin' cheap.

The BK-9 is an excellent chopper. You won't go wrong there.
I'll also second the recommendations for the Ka-Bar Cutlass and the Ka-Bar Grass Machete.
However, if it's something that has any likelihood of being stolen out of your vehicle, I'd just go with a $6 Tramontina machete. It's a quality blade at an insanely inexpensive price.

For a vehicle under $80? Why bother. You spend less than a hundred bucks on a car and its gonna just fall apart soon anyway. Not worth the trouble of putting anything in it.

I suggest an Ontario SP10, Marine Raider Bowie. I've got one, and it's a very rugged chopper. Fits right in line with your price range, too. Made in USA, sturdy, great ergonomics, I just love mine.

if its going to be laying in the truck i dont see what the need of it to be a knife is. i mean is it so much cooler to use a knife to chop wood when a decent axe can do the work in a fraction of the time at half the price?
