Best fixed blade for EDC?

After seeing all the positive feedback, I bought a Bradford G3, an Armatus sheath, and never looked back. It’s put an end to my hunt for a fixed blade to carry.
I just bought a Guardian 5.5 and agree. Bradford makes some no-nonsense knives. Their Kydex is also very nice.

As a decades long carrier of such EDCs as you are describing I would like to make a slightly different suggestion. You have been given a great number of great ideas from relatively inexpensive models to expensive customs. I would like to suggest that the sheath and method of carry might be of more importance than the actual knife itself. It needs to be comfortable, practical, secure and durable. Not any of these and its left home soon. What is it you do? What is it you need an EDC for or rather what are you going to do with it? In my world of ranchers and cowboys; angled, horizontal crossdraw carry rules supreme. For us a knife is not only a useful implement/tool but an important safety device. Horses, cattle, ropes and people can go sideways quickly. A small EDC fixed blade can be a lifesaver for us and I can't tell ya how many knives I've sold after a "wreck" where things got "Western." Nor can I tell ya how many times my sheaths have sold my knives. How am I gonna carry this knife? Just something to think on.

Same way here.

One thing you notice, besides the displayed quality knives, is that the carry is important. So, here is my answer based upon the facts that I am urban, retired and not working, can wear a windbreaker (to discourage Karens from screaming "he has a knife"). A 3 or 4 inch blade in a horizontal, behind the back sheath. It could be one of my Esee4s or Fallkniven F1s. I would probably take the F1.

I agree about sheath, I said, the sheath of my Mini Pendleton was simply a disaster. It was so bad it shouldn't be legal to ship that to your customer and charge for it if you ask me. Sold Steel should have paid me to get them rid of that junk IMO...

So... I had to go for a custom sheath.
I have the same issue with the Mini Pendleton. Where did you go for a custom sheath?

Great little knife and sheath combination. If anybody does kydex better than Bob Dozier, I've yet to see it.
can you show the dozier worn? How comfortable is it driving? Is it bulky?
I've always been curious about his knives, but I always see his sheaths displayed off, on a table......
Thanks.

This is how the knife is worn by me. Totally comfortable sitting and driving. Not bulky in the least. Wearing it I don't feel anything at all. I normally wear my shirts untucked. The knife is completely 100% out of sight then. The sheath has a kydex clip on the back with a nice lip that keeps it securely on the belt. It can be removed without taking the belt off, but it's easier to just unfasten the belt and slide everything off. If there's a better way to carry a knife this size, I'd like to see it.

Are you a super Big guy?
The knife does look small, unnoticeable on you.

I wish I could carry fixed blades regularly here in Michigan, but my understanding is you're only allowed to carry a fixed blade knife if is a hunting style knife and you are in the process of hunting. If anyone knows different about that please let me know.

But in keeping with the theme of the thread, when I'm in the woods with a hunting license I carry a Bark River Fox River. I'm actually considering having a custom kydex sheath made that would hold my Buck 110 Hunter securely in the locked open position. True, it's not a fixed blade but it's always been a tough little beast of a folder and I was thinking it would be nice to carry it already opened so I could easily use it one-handed and not have to close it if I didn't want to. I got a great kydex sheath for my Mora Garberg this year, so I may reach out to that guy and see if he'd do something for me that would hold the 110 locked open. It would be cool to have that feature where you can slip the button over and lock the knife in too.

Anyway, good thread. When I'm bumming around in the woods here on the property I rent I usually carry my Garberg or Mora Kansbol in the kydex sheath around my neck with the handle down. The Kansbol is a bit lighter for neck carry, but the Garberg isn't too bad even with the extra weight of the full tang. Otherwise I carry my Knife Connection Field Buddy 5.5 in a Spec Ops Combat Master Short sheath. I really love that combination for heavier stuff like stripping bark off of poles, shelter building, batoning, etc.

The FB5.5 replaced my Ontario RAT 5 mostly because I am not a fan of finger choils. I still use the RAT 5 and I'm not planning to sell it or anything. If they ever offer one without a big chunk of blade missing I'll buy another and sell the finger choil model I have, but I'm not holding my breath on that. Either way is good because I really like the FB5.5. If I feel like clearing trails or busting brush I'll also carry either an Ontario 18" Sawback Backwoods Chopper machete or my 24" Tramontina. I was out whacking branches and weeds popping up on my trails with that today.

If Michigan law changed tomorrow and I could carry a fixed blade anywhere legally I would probably pick up something like a Shivworks Clinch Pick or a nice fixed blade Karambit and get some training on using one of those. Mark Anastacio's Kali channel on youtube has some Karambit videos that got me interested in those. I know a lot of serious people really like them. I might just get a folding one soon since I haven't got any kind of Karambit in my collection. But I think either a Clinch Pick or a fixed blade Karambit would be an excellent choice for an EDC defense blade. Maybe both!
