Best folding knife choice for the outdoors?

I had a Vic Outrider for awhile, which was a highly competent, outdoor folder. I thought of it as a Huntsman on steroids (same tools, but bigger and with a locking blade).

Right now, my biggest, strongest folder is a GEC #23 Pioneer. It is the size of a Buck 110 but 1095 carbon.

I 98% of the time I am a FB guy but my Folder of choice being not SAK is my Blade Tech PH model,I own a Green G10 & Black G10..

Those are awesome Tony...It was between that and my D2 green para when I made the choice... I wish I knew you had one... I chose the spydie because I didnt know anyone to ask about the Bladetech...

I usually carry a SAK and a BM Griptilian when outdoors. In the near future I plan to go a little bit simpler and pick up a nice sod buster or a folding nessie.

I was a folder collector for many years- I have most of the major blades from the major manufacturers, going back to the early 90's. For me, the best folder, indoors or out, is Chris Reeve's Sebenza. Nothing else even comes close. Since I started carrying my small Sebenza, I haven't been interested in buying anything else. It's perfect.

26 replies to this frequently asked question and NOBODY said anything about a SAK Farmer. Must be some kind of record!;)--KV

I have been using my old Spydie police for a long time when I´m out
in the woods , I do rotate my folders , but this one has seen
more action than most of my folders , a great knife for filleting fish
and camp kitchen duty.

The full flat grind works well when whittling and making fuzzstick too .

Overall a great outdoors folding knife .

Al Mar Mini S.E.R.E 2000 is great I think. Held the full size but havn't used it, but I'm sure it would work.

Yep I carry mine edc and in the woods and I love it, great folder. Sometimes I'll carry a Farmer though. And I just recently got a Fallkniven TK4 which is an excellent cutter that I got mainly for pocket carry while hiking.

+1
I've had many handmades and have been buying factory folders of all types for 30 years.
Bought the small and large micarta inlay Sebenza's in 06 and have sold all of my handmade folders and retired most all of my factory folders. None of them come close to the Sebenza.

I sometimes carry a Para or regular spyderco Military. Not as well made, and doesn't have the great straight handle of the Sebenza's, but great knives for the price.

An opinel is good outdoor folder.

It is cheap, sharp, reasonably tough and the locking system is probably among the most secure on market.

Main problem is the handle tending to swell in the long term in wet weather.

I'll have to disagree with you there. I know a lot of guys get good service from their Opinels- they've been around for a long time for a reason. If you grow up using them, and know how to use them right, I'm sure they work fine. But I bought an Opinel and tried it out, using it exactly the same way I use all of my other knives. I absolutely destroyed the blade, on its first trip into the woods. I'm used to using super-tough knives, and I guess my technique reflects this, but that poor Opinel never stood a chance. Just cutting wood, and doing some light batoning, I mashed and mangled the edge beyond recognition.

Ritter grip or a Lone Wolf D2 ( or a T2 for non-auto).

I've also carried a Sak Farmer, Charge Xti, and now mainly a Juice S2 as my EDC (though a farmer is in my psk).

I just wish the Ritter had full liners.

I just had a Sebenza in a passaround, and I liked it a lot, though I don't think I'd buy one, for my ultra-expensive folder, I'm leaning towards a XM-18.

Lots of goo choices, Im comfortable with a folder in the bush, but if I'm out for more than a few hours I'll take a fixed... But I usually have a fixed as well.

+1 on the Benchmade Griptillian...I only wish I had gotten the orange handle model, that way it would be harder to lose.
