Best Police use knife

How about a Spyderco Police? The serrated version cuts belts really nicely, and the butt end should smash a side window just fine; not a true window punch, but it will work.

BladeTech Responder might be one to look at. Around $100.00 at the Pharmacy. Try www.blade-tech.com for some more info.

Comes in Black G-10 and/or Blaze Orange G-10. NGK has both in stock for $99.95.

How about an H&K Ally? It looks like a nice, little knife that can be had in the $40.00 range and it has a glass breaker. Even though I have a Sebenza in my pocket at work, I've been thinking about adding one of these.

I would also suggest that you consider a Leatherman tool or some other multi tool to carry on your duty belt or in a jacket or coat pocket. My Leatherman tool gets used much more often than my knives.

Keep in mind we want to minimize the weight factor. It isn't a cakewalk being a large elderly officer with all the regulation gear to carry, AND adding in heavy metal on a might-need basis.

:p

That H&K Ally does look like a tough little knife, though. Sheesh. I'm getting one for myself.

I will second the Blade-Tech Responder. It is an awesome knife I have handled one and it is perfect.

New Graham and ISKS have quite alot of choices for LE Duty

Both have good prices on the MT Socom Elites, both the Elite auto and the manual with glass breaker in both PE and PS

http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=6544

http://www.1sks.com/store/microtech-socom-elite-auto-tanto.html

Both Dealers have a load of choices be it Spyderco, CRKT, Microtech, Emerson, MOD, S&W Extreme Ops and others.

Almost any tactical folder makes a great duty knife it really is up to the LEO's personal taste.

None however will cut a jelly donut in half neatly!!!:p

Whichever Emerson model you like the most. The wave is a great feature to have. I am also a big fan of the spyderco paramilitary.

i second the 710 but then again my experience is limited and it is the best knife i have my only other sungestion would be the mini cyclone, perhaps the zdp model.

get a rescue blur, the rounded tip is designed so that in close quarters cutting (i.e., seat belt removal) you don't accidentally stab anyone.

edit: the rescue also has a glass-breaker tip.

CRKT , or Spyderco , lots of models to choose from , good quality , reasonable pricepoint . New Graham has a great selection . The H/K Allay would be a good choice , as would be a Spyderco Salt of some type .

Hi JERcop. I can only relate my experiences with my own equipment. At present, I carry an old S&W 911 and an old Spyderco remote release. Both have served me well, but I'm always looking for new stuff to add to my kit. I'm a stingy Mountie so I can appreciate your concerns about cost. I can also appreciate the added weight of extra stuff. I haven't had to use the glass breaker on the S&W yet but the blunt end on the blade has come in handy prying things like staples. I don't have to worry about damaging the tip. I find the S&W though to be a bit of a compromise; I like to have a tip to be able to stab into things. I've done a hasty removal of an airbag with the Spydie for exhibit purposes. It's fully serrated with a decent belly to the blade shape. It sawed through that fibrous material fairly well. My supervisor borrowed it once to slice through old kevlar plates. Both blades are stainless, which comes in handy in BC's damp climate. Both have plastic handles which again comes in handy in the wet and cold. Both are around $50 each. To lose one wouldn't hurt my pocket. I may replace the Spydie with another, a Salt fully serrated (no fear of rust). I've only looked at the Blade-Tech Responder (the only one I'd consider for myself). It looks the business not bad at $100, but I don't know how easy it is to sharpen. On another note, being a germaphobe on the job, I wouldn't use my tools in food prep.

Hope this helps.

For many years I carried a large Sebenza but there are a lot of good suggestions here. Don't try to incorporate a glass breaker, just get yourself a spring loaded automatic center punch for $10 or less. One "punch" in a corner of the glass and it's gone.

Personally, I carried an Emerson CQC7 with the partially serrated blade to cut seat-belts. I agree with Rich K on the glass breaker. That's what I did, it was easier to get an inexpensive glass breaker & the knife I want/like than to get one with everything incorporated onto it.

It's been quite a few years since being in Patrol (Just over 8 yrs. to be exact). You can carry an auto (If your Dept's policy will allow it), but that doesn't leave you in the clear as far as being sued. A previous poster commented about carrying what your Dept. issues or trains you on. Most PD's don't do that. You're probably better off using an A/O, if you want.

Personally, I think the best bang for the buck would be a waved Delica or Endura 4.

Good luck on your choice.

What I have seen on Swedish police they usually carry some kind of Leatherman multitool. They never use the knife as self defence. One or two carried the Fallkniven F1 and one actually had the Fallkniven S1, but that was in northern Sweden (like Alaska).

For some reason the average joe here gets more "intimidated" by a police carrying a big knife than they get by the SIG P226 they also drag along.

What do you need the glass breaker for, are you not issued an ASP or similar?

I usually recommend Fallkniven for everything, but since they do not have a swish swosh really fast opening folder (until April) I would go with the Emerson CQC7B, even though I have not tried it myself.

The easist way to find out what kind of knife you need is to ask around at work. What do people usually use a knife for?
Is there a big need to stealthly kill off bad guys, then a Sykes Fairbain is the ultimate choice :) It is the only thing that knife does.
How long is the "response time"? The time from you discover that something has to be cut to the actual cutting. Do you pry and abuse stuff?

Anyway. Let us know what you choose.

Thanks all for your help! It's really appreciated. By the way Esav Benyamin, your name is familiar, wern't you pulled over in Poughkeepsie for picking your feet?

Don't rule Mission Knives. Titanium strong-light weight-no rust. They do not have a glass-breaker but the pommel would do the job. Oh, and Esav was picking his SEAT! Good Luck.

I carried the leatherman for a few years, then graduated to the stainless SuperLeatherman. My supervisors approved that, but wouldn't approve much else with a cutting edge. Plenty of tactical belt pouches in varying fabrics and colors are just the right size for the SuperLeatherman. In my experience I was much more likely to experience a sudden need for pliers or a screwdriver (both types) than I was to experience a need for a blade. Used for everything from helping disabled motorists and snipping the chain of a dog someone had padlocked to a fence (took awhile, but it did the job, padlock on the collar end too) without the owners permission, to swapping out a circuit board on the office PC, it served very well.
