Best Police use knife

Anyone have any experience with the auto version?

Yes.

MOD CQD manual
MOD CQD Mark II manual
MOD CQD Mark I auto

These are pretty massive knives, and correspondingly strong. The auto doesn't have an extremely strong action -- it's a heavy blade.

Well, I think some of the recommendations are misguided or influenced by what people THINK an LEO can carry and how the knife will be used. Here's some of my thoughts (through 13 years of street experience)

Gun retention: In my career I've seen two gun take away attempts. Both times, the suspect was not successful, and one of the incidents, the gun was not taken due to the holster's retention device(s). I know of a few Departments that incorporate a knife into their weapon retention training.

During a weapon take away incident, I highly doubt the officer would have time or would use a knife, mainly due to a lack of training or unwillingness to cut. If a knife is used, you may be safe, but will probably be severely punished and/or terminated, and probably sued in civil court and possibly prosecuted federally. If it was used outside of Department Policy, your Department will not cover you.

Some would say that it's better to be alive, but the years of potential ramifications will take a toll, so I'd suggest regular training in established weapon retention techniques, instead of relying on a knife.

99% of LEO knife usage is the everyday cutting chores that any one will face: opening envelopes, opening staples, etc. It's not very glamorous.

Here's my recommendations:

--Spyderco Endura: great knife, yet inexpensive enough to be easily replaced if lost, damaged, etc.

--Benchmade Griptillian: another great cutter, and a bit smaller than the Endura.

--Spyderco Military: a bit pricey, but has a proven track record.

--Benchmade 710: great knife, great track record.

I'll agree with dano on the knife recommendations. Personally I'd pick a Military ComboEdge (CE) or if that's too expensive, an Endura CE.

Mission's Titanium boot/utility knife. Strong-light weight-won't rust.

Oh yeah....I agree with you, Dan. You "do" somebody with a knife, your career is pretty much over.

The Blade Tech Pro Hunter Lite is also a lot of bang for the buck. That's my duty knife and it's been a trooper. Just no glass breaker, but it has a metal spacer at the back.

I'd skip the boot knife or similar weapons, but that's always a personal choice. Things are just too iffy out there right now and if you ever did have to use it, that particular tool would be sure to draw more critics than fans these days. Would also be an all too easy out for the bosses if they were looking to walk away from you (especially if it's not authorized in written policy).

o.t.: What type of sidearm do y'all carry up there? We're with the SIG P229 .40 right now.

I'd second Benchmade ERT-1 for glass breaking and belt cutting (also has led light), and Benchmade griptilian (or mini griptilian) for everyday cutting chores. Benchmade axis lock is just flawless. Griptilian has reversible clip.
If needed, widgy bar for prying.

Model Price Weight
ERT-1 $26.97 100g
Griptilian $70.00 90g
widgy b. $5 160g

Doubt any single device will outperform ERT-1 + Griptilian or ERT-1+Griptilian+widgy bar combination in terms of fit for work, price and weight. Weights are found at internet, so may not be accurate.

Which one is your fav? Did you know John Moore passed away? He will be missed.

I hadn't known. He wasn't young when I met him. He did a fine job wih the company, and was great to correspond with online, also. Our loss as well as his family's.

The MBK was designed exactly the same as the MPU but with a 4" blade instead of the 2". If I ever get the sheath a little bit tighter, I'll carry it instead of the MPU. I should mention the MBK is a great kitchen utility knife.

Close up, it's not a real difference. :)

Thanks, Esav. Also, Caroline told me Mission Knives is for sale. I hope the company will continue but at times like these, you never know. Titanium on a knife sure has it's place in the knife world!

Check out the Sog Bi-Polar. It's got a standard blade and seatbelt cutter blade, both assisted-opening, and a window punch on the handle. Around $100.

Gerber Hinderer would also be good. Around $70. Has seat belt cutter, window punch, and main blade. The main blade is blunt as it's meant to be a light pry tool, but you could probably sharpen it if you wanted. Maybe the blunt point would be better for jelly donuts.

Ive known a good few cops who used Victorinox SAKs . If the glass punch isnt too important to you , you would be well served by one of the Spyderco salts , a Delica or Endura would work very well . Great pricepoint , easy to replace . I know a fey guys who carry a clip equiped folder in the boot to save pocket/belt space , I fear that if you are working uniform , a boot knife would prolly just get ya in deep kimchee if ya used it , an be uncomfortable as hell if ya didnt use it .
