Best Slingshot?

Please tell me your not being an @$$ and shooting at and killing birds for no good reason other than you can. Or, is "birds" a euphemism for something else? If not I really would expect more from a boyscout; when I was a scout they taught us to respect nature.

I say practice and have fun on the real thing....There are plenty of species around that are invasive and ruining the indigenous bird populations and I for one feel good about taking them out. In my state we have Eurasian Doves and Starlings a plenty and there is no better practice then the real thing. I remember quite a few starlings that have fallen to my paintball gun when I had one since I was in a neighborhood and had no other means including a slingshot. I would watch my bird feeders and when the starlings came in driving away the chickadees and finches there was a 68 caliber liquid death ball at 375 fps on its way.

ah reading this is making me want to pick up another sling shot. quick question, anyone have any extensive "hunting" experience? several years back i beamed a raccoon from 5' away, with a crossman wrist rocket and a steel ball bearing. i was at full draw and he freaked out, but still was able to run away after several minutes hiding under the porch.

do coon's just have wicked stong skulls? or is it just not viable on animals larger than birds?

Yes they can be used for larger critters like squirrels, rabbits and similar sized animals reliably but I would think that even with a head shot it would have to be a good one on something like a coon. Does not mean that you cannot send the thing running if he is in an unwanted area with an ass shot.

Wrist braces just add bulk and serve no purpose at slingshot draw weights and the tube bands bought at wally world and the like are pure garbage, very heavy pull and slooooowwww, I would much rather have and hunt with a forked stick I cut myself and some quality flat bands than anything you can buy in a box store.

My current favorite is a dankung American Fox tubed up with chained 20/40 tubes, it is a pleasure to shoot and will make nice holes in steel cans. If yall want to see what modern well made slingshots will do this is a good place to start.

Lots of good stuff out there, but most of the commercial stuff and dang near anything with a wrist brace is trash. Here is a couple of pics of my favorite, today anyway, and one of the bands I am running right now. Chris

That is some cool stuff right there, you make those yourself? I have one sitting beside me right now that I have laminated up and cut out going to finish it this weekend. Again those are some awesome slingshots. Chris

WOW im excited now...Aside from the good videos on the pocket predator site do you like is slingshots? I have only used a box store style one when younger but now that I appreciate quality, style and tradition a little more I love the style of those and would love to start some practice. Can you recommend a good starter model and is it more difficult to become accurate then say a trumark? Not trying to hijack the thread here but I did revive it from the deep so I don't feel too bad.

T-dog, I have never owned one of Bill's slingshots but they are very well respected in the slingshot community and made from bullet proof materials. As far as learning how to shoot, I think the wrist brace models are harder to shoot accurately because of the way I am forced to hold them. BTW Mr Hay's has some more intructional videos on Youtube about how to shoot accurately that are very helpful. Chris

EDIT: Another thing about shooting accurately is proper bands, the first time you shoot some quality flats or small tubes you will be very surprised at how little the draw is and how fast they shoot. Really a lot easier to shoot more accurate than the heavy slow commercial tube bands.

Just finished watching some of his vids and it just makes sense with side shooting. I got pretty dang good with a crappy wally world model years ago so hopefully I got the knack still...don't know if Ill be splitting cards any time soon.

What size ammo are you using and where are you sourcing them from? I know a lot of guys are using lead but I really worry about the handling out in the woods and no way to clean up really good.

I use lead I cast myself, 40 caliber, don't lick your fingers and you'll be fine. There are also lots of suppliers of steel, Nathan will hook you up with some steel shot at a good price and a dang nice SS to go with it. http://flippinoutslingshots.com/ Chris

EDIT: Hobby Lobby and other hobby stores sell glass marbles for 3 dollars for 2 pounds, shoot great for target practice but not so much for hunting.

For target shooting I like 3/8" steel bearings. I use a ketch box and can pick them up with a magnet. In the feeld I use .44 cal lead shot.

My Collections - UK, US , Canadian, Chinese, South America. IMO - do not buy wrist bracket type slingshot!

I love the ones that Jorg makes (from the slingshot channel on youtube) And I still have my old Robberts rocket slingshot from when I was 6. I also have a vintage "Wrist Rocket" that was made in Columbus Nebraska too.

Fun stuff.

Hard to understand how many guys are saying wrist braces are crap, that's one opinion but not mine as with others on the thread.
For a rookie it is not fair to steer them towards a no brace model. They will stop using it long before any real accuracy or skill comes about unless they are dedicated.

Slingshotting for 33 years since I was 7. Just using the basic Tru-mark with brace right now, and what a good inexpensive slingshot.

I have an old jig mold that makes .30/ .32cal and .44/.46 caliber lead balls by my rough measurement. Just have to nip the flue off with sidecutters because of the hook holes and smooth a little on a file. I swear the big ones hit hard enough to kill someone at close range, I can imbed them in softwood at 30 feet, a little too much for squirrels and small birds.
The .32cal are perfect for small game, laser accurate, fast and still hit plenty hard.

About 4 yrs ago I picked up about 100lbs of lead diving belt weights in rough shape for next to nothing from an old diver at a garage sale. Thats a lot of shooting, still probably have 60lbs with all the 2 and 3oz bouncing betty's I cast for river fishing.

You are the first person I know that is serious about shooting sling shots that will touch one with a wrist brace because they are harder to shoot accurately. Another thing is that all of them, besides 2 models from Saunders, force you to use big tubular bands that are super inefficient and super slow. If you are getting the kind of speeds you are talking about with commercial tube bands, switch to a set of tapered theraband gold flats and you'll be taking out deer and hogs. LOL Chris

I have been a dedicated archer/bowyer for 35 years. Always had a wristrocket around but could never get the kind of accuracy that I could get with a bow. A few years ago I did some tinkering in my shop and made my own slingshot non-wrist braced and flat bands. In short time I was holding a 1.5" group at 33 feet. On a good day I can hit a dime at 45 feet. I still have some of those old wristrockets around but I dont use them much. flat bands hit harder and my ergonomic slingshots help me shoot better.
Mike
