Best Slingshot?

I have been a dedicated archer/bowyer for 35 years. Always had a wristrocket around but could never get the kind of accuracy that I could get with a bow. A few years ago I did some tinkering in my shop and made my own slingshot non-wrist braced and flat bands. In short time I was holding a 1.5" group at 33 feet. On a good day I can hit a dime at 45 feet. I still have some of those old wristrockets around but I dont use them much. flat bands hit harder and my ergonomic slingshots help me shoot better.

Pretty much exactly my experience, I have an original pocket rocket, folding wrist brace that I've had for probably 30 years. I thought it was pretty good till I tried a small board cut with flat bands, Wow what a difference, I shot it better from the first shot, it was easier to pull and shot harder. Now I am playing with the dankungs, love the small size and the small tubes are not as fast as the flats but last good and shoot pretty dang hard, especially if you taper them. Chris

My Collections - UK, US , Canadian, Chinese, South America. IMO - do not buy wrist bracket type slingshot!
Wow You have a nice collection going there. just about everybody I know.

Good article thanks for that. There is a lot more infromation that has been discovered about how rubber stores and relieases energy. In a nut shell, thin rubber will be more efficient, meaning more speed for the work being done. Big tubes are good for spearguns and throwing big rocks waterbaloons and fruit. thin tubes and flat bands will get more veloicity for hunting sized ammo. I have two slingshots rigged one with tubes and one with flat bands. The tubes pull 27 pounds at 28" and shoots a .44 cal lead at 190 FPS. The flat bands pull 16 pounds at 28" and shoots 235 FPS with the same ammo. Bouth the tubes and the flats are made from the same rubbber and by the same company, and are the same length.

Wow bikermikearchery I did not realize the difference the flat bands make 60% of the pull with 25% more velocity is impressive.

That link and info some of you guys have posted got me thinking about trying a no brace one with flat bands, or at the very least flat bands on my trumark.

Did not realize how many guys like them over a braced model.

I tried someones no brace one 25 years ago and was not impressed but it could have been a cheap lemon or my unfamiliarity.

Good thread guys, always learning.

I picked up a wrist rocket at Walmart a couple days ago. Started out using the 1/4 steel slingshot ammo with fair to dismal results. I took the brace off and use marbles from Dollar General for ammo. Changing my technique to a sideways type hold I'm getting better results.Tin cans now fear me! I will probably purchase one from http://www.pocketpredator.com/one.html. Was thinking about a Dakung but I think I'll go-Made is the USA.

The Dankung is OK but a very small slingshot. There the reason I started making my Aluminum slingshots. I increased the size of a Dankung by 30% I also wanted to be able to use flat bands as well as tubes.
Bill Hays of pocketpredator is top notch.

Any advice on a source for a good slingshot? I'm looking for something lightweight that I can keep in my pack. Aluminum, Titanium, maybe a polymer or something. Steel would probably be heavier than I would want.

What do you want to do with it? For plinking, some light bands and whatever ammo shoots good for you. For hunting, steel, lead and maybe marbles are about it. Chris

I picked up a Trumark S9T with tapered bands for $10 at sports authority. I removed the ammo holder/handle and wrapped it. light weight- aluminum. The tapered bands negate the need for the wrist brace, pulls easy- hits decent.

WJC01,
That is a good looking slingshot, compact and functional. IMO those tapers are as good as it gets for commercial bands. If you want a little more power lots of people shoot that model backwards, with the forks facing away from you, and tie on flat bands, really turns it into a powerhouse. Chris

Thanks for the advise Chris-I plan on going with something from Pocket Predator with flat bands. In the meantime I'm going to run these bands- my wife likes the ease of pull on this set-up. Would flat bands afford ease of pull?
I also bought a spare Trumark heavy black band(tubular). Anyone have an experience with them? Does it boost the power to a noticeable difference or just make it difficult to shoot?Should I return it and get a spare tapered band?
(If you ask why all the Trumark gear is because they carry it in the local sporting goods store.)

Cool, pocket predators are really well thought of and I'm sure you'll love it. One of the really cool things about slingshots is that, unlike archery, projectile speed is determined on how quickly the rubber retracts not how heavy the pull is. The heavy pull bands, like the black ones, are the best for shooting the heaviest projectiles like arrows but for normal shooting they are not very good, I would stick with the tapers. Here is an eye opening couple of videos, again by Bill Hays. Chris

Thanks, those video's are very helpful, I'm passing them on to my brother who is re-introducing himself back into slingshots.
Picked up some good practice shooting tonight-Instinctive type- look, shoot, no aiming-25ft -5 hits on a can in a row.

Saw this awhile ago. Thought I would share.
