Best Slingshot?

Sir Mike-I've been messing with slingshots on and off for a long time (mostly shooting wrist rocket types without proper technique and poor ammo.) This thread ignited the "fever". I have just started learning this past week from the guys on this thread. Your questions were mine days earlier.
Here are two store bought ones I'm currently using. Both under $10 dollars purchased locally. Both slightly modified.Rapped handles and I bent the forks in slightly on the one on the right with the lanyard. I'm getting good results from each. Using a recovered 9mm 115gr FMJ bullet I punched a hole through a tin can with the short model on the right.

Since then I ordered one from Bikermikearchery-he will point you in the right direction.

Just finished this one up it shoots like a dream. Oak, birch and cotton cloth laminations, I have 17/45 bands on it and fits my hand like a glove. Chris

Hey Chris,

very, very nice slingshot. The structure of the oak wood and the overall shape is so classic and beautiful.

Is there any fps difference or length you can shoot with either one over the other?

The bands on the one on the right "gave up the ghost" yesterday. I replaced them with a set of Trumark red tapered bands(12hrs left of set time before shooting). They should be identical in velocity. I have a chronograph at work so once the new slingshot arrives I'll have to set it up and will check the results.
AMMO REPORT-It dawned on me that I have a unlimited supply of ammo-once expended jacketed handgun projectiles-I've had good results with the few I've recovered from my old home range and my work location offers a "cornucopia" of the above mentioned hazardous projectiles. I still have my tumbler from my old reloading days(to make them pretty If I choose!). Ammo recovery OPs begin early Monday morning.

Man thats a score. nothing beets free ammo.

I love the ones that Jorg makes (from the slingshot channel on youtube) And I still have my old Robberts rocket slingshot from when I was 6. I also have a vintage "Wrist Rocket" that was made in Columbus Nebraska too.

Fun stuff.

DaleW,

I used 22LR brass in my sling shot. It will make a whistling sound. I'll have to try some or the spent primers sometime.

Anyhow, have you guys see this JoergSpraprave's stuff? Check out some of his YouTube stuff JoergSprave

Mike, Could you post a pic of how you would mount a standard commercial type tube band on your Aluminum slingshots. I would like to set up a spare Trumark red taper band for a field expedient quick attachment back up band(FEQABUB).
Your SS works great but one of the flat bands has tiny holes all along one band.I replaced it with the chinese tube.Within a very short span there was a nick in the tube near the pouch. I was able to repair it by shortening the tubes (used 550 cord threads to secure the tubes to pouch). I had a couple fork hits which after some research on the slingshot forum attribute to bad pouch release techniques.I figure that is the cause of my band damage.
I tested the shortened chinese band last night off my back porch and made some phenomenal shots.

SS with the shortened bands.

I'm not Mike, but if you are shooting the chinese tubes well I would stick with them, they are cheaper and easier to work with. If you really want use the trumarks I would stick the tubes through the holes and insert a ball bearing into the tubes to hold them in place. Chris

Check the slingshot for nicks. #0000 steel wool is good for finding and working out nicks. Bands almost always wear out at the pouch and that should take about 1000+ shots. Holes mean there is a nick some place or something sharp has been rubbing the bands OR could have been some faulty rubber to begin with.
There are a lot of different ways to put tubes on that slingshot. I'll work up some pictures.
The first and simplest is to tie them on just like you would the flat bands with rubber bands. Mark the bands on one edge near the tie off end so you don't get any twist in the band when you tie off.

4 ways to put tubes on a universal type slingshot. there are many more.
#1 leather tabs, longest lasting.
#2 Tied over the top. Mark the tubes to make shure there is no twist when you tie them.
#3 tied loops. You can tie these up ahead or time and they can slip over.
#4 ball in the tube. simple but my least favoritethey tend to move around and you get more fork hits with these.

Forgive my ignorance, bu what exactly is going on with the ties in the above photo? Is it just a heavy thread wrapped a bunch of imes and tied, or is the tube/band folded over? I have looked a bit for a tutorial specifically on how to replace bands, but haven't found one.

I love slingshots, but have only used bent wire types and tubular bands. I love keeping one in my car for wasting time, but would like to hunt ethically so I guess that means flat bands and I need to know how to tie them on.

I was trying to show different ways of connecting tubes to the universal slingshot ends.
The best connection has always been rubber on rubber.
Here is a good video of how the bands are attached to a frame.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLjqzq6aRjM
The first photo has a piece of leather run through a hole then the tube is attached to the leather with wraps of rubber. The leather helps reduce friction over the top of the slingshot.

Thanx for the link Mike, exactly what I wanted to know! Now to cut some plywood to make my own, but I have to order some bands I guess.
