Best Spyderco SD?

The Police is a great choice.
Was wondering if some holes could be bored into the side slabs of the handle (as in CRKT's M16)?
That would probably lower the weight and could serve as a better grip for the palms...

My vote would be for the Masaad Ayoob and Police.

Not sure how many editions there are of the Ayoob but I have two, one has slick handle while the other does not.

I have the smooth G-10 Handles on the Ayoob. As indicated I have the POLICE with a modified/rubberized handle.

some blades i personally like for SD :

spyderco dallara drop point CE
spyderco military SE
spyderco endura SE
spyderco native PE
cold steel 4 inch vaquero SE
cold steel 4 inch tanto voyager PE
benchmade apparition PE
kershaw speedbump g10 handle
kershaw whirlwind
kershaw junkyard dog 2
kershaw large cyclone

You sure you have a G-10 Ayoob? I thought they only came with black or gray Alumite (aluminum) and the less common black micarta.

As far as I know, all the C60 Ayoobs have aluminum scales. Some feel like standard smooth anodizing, some feel like Almite with a bit more texture. Mas Ayoob posted in one thread we had going that he intended the design to have G-10 scales, but it was released with aluminum. He wanted to see it in G-10, too.

G10 handles will indeed tear up a suit.

The Native is very size-efficient.
The Chinook would be a good choice if you found yourself in a fight, and only had a knife. Again, it will tear up your suit pants.
The Endura 4 is an awesome knife, and an incredible bargain. Light, but a good size, and wickedly sharp.
Yojimbo, great knife, again, G10, hard on pants.

Something I don't think anyone's mentioned, but that I find an extremely useful knife for SD or most anything else, is the Salsa. Short knife, wide, continuously curving blade for optimal cutting. Compression lock, Cobra hood, smooth handles. You might just like it. :)

The best knife instruction for a beginner I think is Kill or Get Killed by Col Applegate.
You can get it free on PDF from Stevespages.
Do you have a link for this? I searched but could not find it.
Thanks for any help

Mercop ,Emerson ,Keating and Wagner are all practical experts in the field.

Reverse grip sucks.[/QUOTE]

Would have been nice to had the G-10 scales.

I took sandpaper and rough up the scales on my police which didn't change the grip greatly but better then out of the box for gripping.

civilian
chinook 3
manix
military
In order best to worst.
But civilian is only and slashing blade ment for the hit and run a less leathal option.Military would have the best point for entry though.chinook whould have a good combination of the two followed by the manix.

Don't laugh.... but after playing around quite a bit, and adding some much-needed grip tape to the handle, I have to go with the Centofante III.

It's lightweight, carries unobtrusively as a dress knife, thrusts clear through anything I put in front of it, thin and sharp enough to be among the best slicers I"ve ever seen, much better IMO than the Endura.

I'm sure there are tougher, stronger knives for serious utility work. But for SD I think this Spyderco knife, albeit with modified, grippier handles, is a sleeper.

Which do you think is the easiest to access from challenging positions - EG
- lying on your front / back / side (IE falling or being pushed down)
- sitting down / strapped in (eg car seat)
- when unbalanced
- when running

..and can then be deployed under stress and pressure 100% reliably too from aforementioned position(s)?

I havent checked, and I am going to after penning this (and after penning this I ought to!) - but I wonder if size has an impact on access in challenging positions - EG when seated I would have thought it might be harder to pull out a larger folder over a smaller folder, simply because clothes get scrunched, clips get caught etc.

If I cant get it out when I need it - its no good to me.... and... there is a good chance that I wont be standing at my most ready, stable based and fully coordinated when I need it! So,I would have thought, that before steel / shape / design etc- that ease of access and deployment in all situations - especially the challenging ones - would be important factors?

Update: I have been carrying my modified Police. It disappears IWB.

When we were training in AZ, we discussed the two legged and four legged threats. One of the guys I work felt a knife wasn't PC enough. We flew back last week and I encouraged him to carry an edged weapon. He responded he wasn't worried about it. Two days ago, this PC gentleman was attacked by two stray dogs.

unfortunately some people are more worried about being criticized by others over their own safety. some people are also in total denial about situations that require self defense and using knives for self defense, as we can tell by some of the comments made by certain people on this thread. self defense, and having to use/encounter an edged weapon is a scary situation that many people do not want to think about. i think it is to their disadvantage. there seem to be a great deal of people who also think that merely possessing certain weapons like guns automatically makes them invincible. :jerkit: owning a guitar does not automatically make one a guitarist or musician.

who do you train with bro? what kind of training? what strategies did you guys come up with for encounters with four legged threats???
