Best Spyderco SD?

The Military is a liner lock. Tip up is not usually the safest option. Now if they changed the lock...

Dragonram7- I did that on my coffee table with ONLY 2 files, a triangular to start the cuts, and a round file to shape them. I did not even use a vice. It only took maybe an hour or two to do. I can't remember. WRAP THE BLADE WELL! Then rinse the knife to get the metal filings out of the handle and pivot area. BE CAREFUL and good luck bro. The spine of my blade behind the opening hole and the locking bar are not jimped, as it was too difficult to do with the file, the VG-10 is harder than the handle steel. I didn't want to cut into the locking bar with a dremel, but some jimping behind the hole would offer a better purchase for the thumb.

I got used to tip up carry from my first ENDURA with the PLASTIC clip - remember? :( I can flip the MILLIE around when "palming" - but I did grow used to that old PUPPY. :p

What kind of lock would you prefer? ;)

Just wondering.

Best wishes,

SW

I would love to see an upgrade in lock on the Military. Compression lock or at least a thick frame lock would really add to the stature of an already proven folder!

Perfect. I'll post the aftermath. It should come in next week. I'll keep the directions. I also like the look of the scallops on the CRK Sabenza. Thanks again.

I was forced to buy the CIVILIAN.

Now I'll do a side-by-side comparison versus the MILITARY.

CIVILIAN sure reminds me of JARASIC PARK for some reason: I just can't figure it out. ;) Must rhyme with RAPTOR, though. :o

Both nice but I rather carry the MILLIE every day.

Thanks. I purchased the Police SE and the Karambit. I am waiting for the Miltary and Endura to come in. I will either get a CFBG42 or a CPMD2/Green G10. I'll post when I get them in.

I really like the POLICE in Carbon Fiber. I have a POLICE SS (old 15 years ago) and I prefer the MILLIE's cutting power. I've always like the OLD Endura. The CIVILIAN is a great knife for only one purpose. WHITE HAT Self Defense. ;) That said I would carry it in the other pocket.

I've had a CCW in CA for 42 years - boy, I'm getting old @ 63. I rarely had to use it off duty - four times - to save my life or serious injury. I prefer the MILLIE because it is a great knife to cut with. Now, I have used a knife over perhaps a 1,000 times in those same 42 years - never for self-defense - however. But the MILLIE, CIVILIAN, POLICE, ENDURA & several special runs - are fine weapons for that if all else fails. ;)

Like in the old Indiana Jones movie where the Egyptian fellow is swinging around his huge Arab type sword - and Harrison Ford puts out his old S & W .45 revolver and PLUGS him.

Re. the video: The assailant was a homicidal/suicidal psycho with an 8-10" bowie. I don't suppose anyone here imagines that the cops, obviously in neither a homicidal nor suicidal mindset, would have done better if they were armed with folding knives (say, for the sake of argument, a 4" CS Voyager...) rather than firearms?

I'll keep my Glock 36, thanks.

the point wasnt that the cops needed knives to protect themselves lol......the point of the video was to show that not even a gun can guarantee your safety, and that knives can be quite formidable weapons..

On 08OCT07 I will be at the Mid Atlantic Tactical Officers Asso Conference in Sharon Hill PA with Sharkee Training Knives. I will be there to demo my Spontaneous Attack Survival SAS for Edged Weapons. I can assure you that at that end of that demo officers will think twice about that "brining a knife to a gunfight" bullshit. Within arms distance the blade has no equal.

AMEN.
A KNIFE Within 20 feet - on a well-fit perp - it's A shoot first ask questions later situation.

Knives are fast and strike multiple targets. With the handgun, there is your standard reponse that inflict trauma in very localized areas. The knife causes massive trauma over a much larger area. Most individuals can pull out a knife faster than a gun. To qualify this, at the range we were lucky to have out Officers shoot in under 1 second. Generally, a few week after the training, most officers reverted back to their bad habits and slow reponse times.

I remember on a few ocassions, an offender would already have his knife out. He would be transfixed on my gun hand-like he was waiting for a traffic signal to turn. With my left hand, I would pull my Endura, Sog Pentagon Elite II, or my Cold Steel X2. It would end the fight quickly

For IWB carry, the Police is the the most comfortable knife I've ever encountered(that's why I bought it). For other carry methods, Endura 4 Wave is great, and the P'kal is okay(a bit speciallized, but workable, especially for a "it's coming right for us!' situation.

Police with your your choice of additional "gripiness" would be best for IWB.

Per Pete's recommendation, I filed a few jimping grips to the frame. Pictures posted on post your spyderco thread. Then I took the plastic covering that comes on the knife and used it for a template. I used it to cut some half scales from a hogue grip. Actually doesn't look too bad. I love the thin profile of this knife (POLICE). With the jimping and the hogue half-moon grips, the knife is rock solid in the hand. TESTED with WD-40, it's glued to my hand. Thanks guys. Karambit is a great knife. IWB is non-existant. I was missing it one morning and found it IWB in my folded pants. The Ayoob is very light weight. I haven't worn it as much as the Police. IT truly is perfect out of the box. Masaad did a great job on the knife. I'd like to find a plain edge to try it for utility. The SE is wicked looking.

What's the best Spyderco SD model out there?
I need a slim profile knife that will be carried IWB or in the back pocket of a suit. I might need the knife for protection against two legged and stray four legged creatures. A firearm won't work for this position. I have come to the forums before and received very sound advice. Any recommendations are appreciated.

When I caried folders for defensive work I had a Civilian weak side and a Military strong side. For purely defensive work I would go with the Civilian. If you were worried about the delicateness of the point I'd go with a Spyderhawk style and size. The hawkbill style knive is IMHO one of the best instinctual use defensive blade styles there is. If the hawkbill ain't your cuppa tea go with the Military.

By the way, if this is going to be strictly a defensive knife I'd get one of those folding razor blade knives for everyday mundane chores.

Have you considered a small fixed blade with a multi-position sheath? While the sheath isn't actually multi-position, it will fit easily IWB and the belt loop will fold over neatly to run your belt through.

There are a few fixed blades I like (Fred Perrin). I wanted to go with a folder that disappears. I purchased the Police, Karambit, and luckily found the Ayoob. I made some modifications to the POLICE (jimping and hogue half-moon grips-grips on the lower half of the knife). Love the police but in the future , I might get the street beat by Perrin.
