Best Spyderco SD?

I like the Endura for the durability, clip adaptability and availiability of a trainer. I use SCDU for the selection of tools. Selection, Carry, Deployment and Use. Using a knife against a human is no big deal since steel cuts flesh pretty easy. The hard part is knowing when and how to deploy the blade especially under stress. Even more so with a folder. For a primary defensive folder I only like tip down folders carried in the strong side pocket, drawn closed into a hamnmerfist grip and then opened if you need to. I have a little traditional MA training when it comes to edged weapons. I think very little of it transfers to the street. In the street it at least starts out as open hand vs knife. Those odds suck, they suck more if that is not what you train for.
I'll put the Endura down for another. It's almost time to tally the final votes.

I'll close it down at 22:00 MST.
As it stands, the favorites are as follows:
Endura-9 votes
Military-8
Police-8
Chinook-5
Civilian/Matrirch-4
D'Allara-3
Manix-2
Rescue Jr.-2
Masaad Ayoob (unavailable)-1
Delica 4-wave-1
Mini Manix-1
Para Military-1
Lava-1
Harpy-1
Al Mar SERE-1
I'm just hoping we don't have a three way tie. I be on and off until 22:00 MST and I will Place the order. Thanks for the help.

+1 for the Military. It gives you more effective choices for holds and a bit more reach.

I do this stuff for a living- train civilians and LEO's to stay alive. My vote goes to the Police model first (more so if you can find a G-10 flat ground Police, my
personal "bad neighborhood" blade) And either the Military or Endura next. And a 50/50 blade at most as fully serrated blades tend not to slash as deeply and
occassionally get caught in heavy clothing, especially zippers. PE is really best.

A couple of tips- get your Police bead blasted (not sandblasted) to improve the grip when sweaty, do not sharpen the swedge. Get some actual street
blade training from a reputable teacher. At least view some dvd's from shivworks, Keating, Janich. Practice and situational awareness is what keeps you alive.

BK6

I have a flat ground SE G-10 police that hasn't left my pocket since "some guy" ;) gave it to me.

On the SS police, my half serrated one is pretty grippy. ;)

can't go wrong with the dodo (my baby civilian) either. You might want to check out spyderco.com's forums with some of the meat tests that Doc Snubnose does, and the Youtube video where Michael Janich demonstrates what a small blade (box cutter and delica CE) can do.

on the TOP three in various forms and thinking if I was buying my first knife from that selection:

I'd pick the ENDURA fully serrated with ZPD blade for around $72.00

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=endura+zdp&category0=

Kinda LIKE a steal with that STEEL (pun intended).

Second choice if I was on the rich side would be the other two (either one)
with carbon fiber - and that's a couple of bucks more than the Endura.

Too bad the Military is not in ZPD fully serrated with carbon fiber grips for JUST $100.00 smackers.
Dreamin', I'm just dreamin'

I am kind of late to this party, but my current job description reads similar to yours Sir and the BK6. I would say to keep in mind the overall picture of your job description. When you evaluate your tools and speaking now from l.e.o and protection background, one trick ponies are appealing until you match it with the job. I will narrow it a little bit. The only thing you have is your objective. Gun, stick, knife whatever are just tools that you may have at hand to get the job done. There is too much emphasis on one or the other. In a extreme close quarter scrap, the differences are negligent at best.

I have had great success with the folder in a closed position as oppose to carving my way through a crowd!:o The folder should shine in the closed as well as open position. That may narrow some of your choices. It does not make it a bad knife, just matching what you need for your job. If it is the kind of work that I think you are referring to then being able to safely guide or change someones channel or get your folks from point a to b with the option of going lethal if need be is a win win.

If you are not already palming it(situational awarness), then you want to make sure you can access it quickly. If you chose the waistband upfront, with a sturdy belt, you will have no problems waving, but those who know me will not believe I am saying this, but the wave is not paramount for protection work(though it has its advantages), your folder will be more for a fistload to lethal as far use of force continuum. Sorry so long, but a pop to the sternum or another bony area or redirecting quickly is where you should start.

Well thought out comments. Palming IS A good idea. I remember my old Kubaton days on-the-job in uniform. When guns were MOSTLY revolvers.
Now give me a Glock 23 or 27. And a MILITARY as back-up - with LISTEN SAL - TIP up carry. I use the right pocket of BLACK clothes with hang over around flat shirt!

Plus one and one to DODO. Thanks for the pictures

Three way tie
Police-9 (Pete1979- let me know how you did the jimping on the handle)
Military-9
Endura-9
Chinook-5
Civilian-4
D'Allara-3
Manix-2
Rescue Jr-2
DoDo-1
Harpy-1
Mini Manix-1
Masaad Ayoob-1 (if I could find one I'd buy it)
Lava-1
Delica 4 wave-1
Al Mar SERE-1

That's the final. I want to thank everyone that took time and contributed. As I mentioned previousely, what looks good on paper doesn't always translate in the field. It is helpful to get a first hand opinions on what wears and works well.
I have ordered from a local dealer that is on the net. He is having the knives shipped to the store (no shipping) from his his warehouse in the South.
Police $75.99
Endura $42.99
Military $92.99
The Police SE is in stock and is shipping within 48 hrs. I will see it next week.
The Endura PE is out of stock but I should see that next.
The Military SE is on order, I will see that last.
The jimping really looks great on the police. There is also a clear plastic that they use on pools and boats. When its dry, you don't really notice it but when it gets wet it get grippy.
I am a ScoutMaster BSA, so I have a job for the Military.
I'll dig this out of archives and put the pictures on. Thank you again for all the contributions.

I did it by hand with a triangular file, and then a round file. They are semi-circular shaped, I found them grippier than just the cuts with the triangle. The files cut pretty easily.

A bit of friction tape on the non-clip side of the handle makes drawing from IWB easier, and I've found the stainless police to be one of the most comfortable IWB carry knives I own due to it's slim profile.

FWIW, the Endura 4 with SS handles I think is grippier than the Endura 3 but I've never handled one.

I hope I can make it look that good. Thanks for the direction. I'll post the pics when it comes it. Thanks again.

It kills me to admit it because I want the Police to win but I actually had my vote for the Police counted twice.

For a nonspydie vote My Emerson Commander is a near perfect folder for draw cuts in a sabre grip and also has a Wave. It is also very very grippy with G10 slabs and jimping on most parts where you hold it.

You can get a VG10 Endura and a trainer from New Graham for around a 100$

i went back, your double tab would have broken the tie at 10. I purchaes all three winners. Thank you for the votes. I'll be back with pics.

And a MILITARY as back-up - with LISTEN SAL - TIP up carry.

The Military is a liner lock. Tip up is not usually the safest option. Now if they changed the lock...

Dragonram7- I did that on my coffee table with ONLY 2 files, a triangular to start the cuts, and a round file to shape them. I did not even use a vice. It only took maybe an hour or two to do. I can't remember. WRAP THE BLADE WELL! Then rinse the knife to get the metal filings out of the handle and pivot area. BE CAREFUL and good luck bro. The spine of my blade behind the opening hole and the locking bar are not jimped, as it was too difficult to do with the file, the VG-10 is harder than the handle steel. I didn't want to cut into the locking bar with a dremel, but some jimping behind the hole would offer a better purchase for the thumb.
