best survival knife?!

I've not been able to understand what the large difference is between the skookum and the H1 (having handled neither). They look very similar in pictures.

The biggest difference is their thickness, the H1 is (IIRC) 4.5 mm and the Skookum is 3mm, so the H1 is 1.5 mm thicker. They also have different grinds and the H1 is a laminated stainless while the Skookum is a high-carbon. :D

Oh... and about $100.00 more and a six month wait for the Skookum. :p

I bought my Dad the Freeman Hunter for Christmas - it was around $30 (Amazon). When I received it in the mail, I almost didn't want to give it to him, it is a really nice knife. I read it was "Knife of the Year" in like 2003 or something. I am seriously considering getting one for myself:D You should post a pic...

Okay, I found some pics, it's not a bad knife at all. I just carry around my diamond rod with me to touch it up here and there, which is what I do for all of my knives anyways. It's very light weight and I found a nice high carry leather sheath for it so I can wear it wherever I go without anybody seeing it. It's taking a little bit to get used to because all I'm used to having is my folder of the day. Great knife though .

Speaking of Freeman, here is a good survival knife.

That looks well worth the weight. I think that one is around $69.98 at the local Academy, so I just stuck with the regular Freeman Hunter for the $40.00. How do the blades lock up? Are they sturdy or do they wobble?

No wobble what so ever. Sportsmans warehouse had these on clearance for 40.00. I really like it so far.

I thought it was a SAK... then a Buck 110... then a Buck 192 (Great grip!). I went beserk after finding out what Bear Grylls' Bayley knife cost - and spent nearly that trying to 'find' my answer - since Christmas! I was so proud - my plastic WAS paid off - thru Christmas - then this!

My first choice was the little 'Huntsman' - simply because I now carry it in a KSF pocket sheath with a firesteel in my front pocket. In the woods, I could carry more -on my belt - it would likely be the LE North Star - or Gameskeeper, although both are as of now 'untested' in such use.

That old Marine knife has been through hell and back. It's been my walking stick chopper for many years. I bought in in about 1992. I can chop branches and knots off all day and it still feels sharp. I used to sharpen it on a small bench grinder. That Kershaw Blade Trader gets used a lot to. Many times as I head out the door I am not sure what kind of knife I might need so I just grab that one. I have had that for 15 years or so.

First let me agree with several others: decide what you are trying to survive and where you are trying to survive it. A northwoodsman's choice to survive a blizzard in the bush is going to be different from someone trying to survive an earthquake in San Francisco.

Being a northman from the northwoods, I'd prefer a hatchet to any knife. My favorite being:

I can use if for anything from gathering wood to chopping ice to skinning and preparing game.

But, since this is what KNIFE (so I don't get chided for going too far off topic), It'd probably be a Leuku

I agree. However I prefer a Hatchet and a small to medium size knife like the Mora 2000.:D However the Helle Laplander would work.

LOL, to run the risk of answering the wrong question, I usually head out with the hatchet, Leuku and 3 7/8" Puukko. I just like the Järvenpää knives better than the Moras. ;)

still waiting for mine but i would say
busse ASH1
would also say batac cs g-rex the ss or the ffbm any busse would go to the mat and come back again. if you question them check out tyrkon link on his sig.

eastr77: The Scrap Yard Scraper 6 went through every test in my line up and survived mostly in one piece. It is the only one That I have declared a survivor. I finally did it in after the fact.

You know, I got to really thinking about this again today and came to the conclusion that I would do just fine with just a good SAK.

While touching up the blade on my explorer today I got to thinking of all the things I have done with that knife. I worked in the building industry for many years and have used that knife for all kinds of wood working. This includes whittling, shaving down doors and using it as a chisel to cut in hinges by tapping the blade with a hammer. Nothing ever hurt this knife and I can't imagine a survival situation that would push my knife to the limit more than carpenter work. Give me the Farmer or trekker with the saw blade and turn me loose. I would have no fear. At least not of being under knifed.

Your right, its tough to baton with a SAK but in 60 Plus years, I have never batoned with any knife because I never found a reason to do so. I still can't see me going into the wild without a hatchet though.
