Only requirement is that blade must be less than 4"

Which folder do you think best represents the concept of backup weapon for a home-defense scenario?

My votes would be:
1. Emerson CQC-12

2. Microtech Scarab D/E plain

3. Spyderco Chinook

would be a nice last resort in sorting out area disputes.

Not exactly folders, but food for thought after all Todd Begg's ready for anything!

Darrell Ralph CUDA Maxx stilletto, in D2. 5.5" blade. The flippers hook on pockets like a wave feature. Very flat.

I had one a few years ago and sold it. Wish I still had it.

I wouldn't depend on an auto or an AO in a life-or-death situation. I would choose an Al Mar Sere or Spyderco Milli.

+1. Less complicated the better.

I'm not a fan of the wave feature but I can see the simplicity in the design.

Personally, I would never want to use a folder <4 inches for any home defense. However, hypothetically speaking, if for some reason I was restricted to the parameters you gave, I would go with my Spyderco Civilian.

Less than four inches, I think the cqc-12 is the top choice without a doubt.
The Chinook is good. The Civilian is slightly over four inches.
If cost isn't a worry, might consider other Emersons with custom frame-locks.
I'd also look into Coldsteels offerings with the Triad lock and that approx. blade length.

If it just had to be, and there were no other options, then a stabbing type knife would be a CS Ti-Lite, and a slashing type knife would be a Spyderco Civilan. A CS Black Talon would also be a slashing type of knife.

I love the idea of a 5.5" MAXX!

I'd hate to be on the receiving end of any blade!!

After seeing how easy it cuts through hide and muscle, not every sharp knife cuts the same. Basing my opinion on knives I've used to skin deer, the umnumzaan cut as well as a Dozier skinner. A cqc8 with a krein regrind is also a very effective cutter.

Slightly edited for my choice. I would also never put my life on the line and defend it with a toy-like knife. I do not like auto's, I've owned several and they are pretty much unreliable and not practical. :D

Thin sharp, 4-1/4" pointy blade with solid lock-up and a nice curved edge. Handle feels very secure and it's easy to quickly modify grips.
