Best weapon-like folder?

There is a loaded gun hidden in every room of the house and some have a couple. More than enough to a backup for my backup for my backup, and so on. I'm sorry but the last thing I would pick up is a knife. If guns suddenly stopped working then I would rather have a baseball bat or a machete long before a folder.

So my answer is any knife as long as it is taped to the end of a 12 ga or AR15.

Edit: I also have a 7 dog house alarm and live a 1/4 mile down a dirt driveway so any car or person is quite obvious to me and the dogs. I'm also not a tinfoil hat wearing gun freak that likes to dress in full camo and go to gun shows. I'm just a fairly normal guy who likes guns/knives and likes to have a plan and be prepared.

ok...................BUT what knife would you tape to the end of your shotgun/AR15?:D

Probably my Rift. I love that thing. Plus I could close it up when not in a fire fight and when I'm mowing down bad guys I can trust the AXIS lock to keep the blade open.

Not everyone has the privilege of owning guns, dogs, or alarm systems for that matter. Baseball bats are good but they are hard to swing in narrow hallways and tight spaces. If they get in close or grab you from behind it won;t be all that helpful either. That being said, for HD fixed blade>folders but since he asked about folders and not fixed blades, offer a response that is more on base. Everyone is aware that guns are better than knives.

Yes, but a lot of people think that knives are a good idea for a defensive tool. Unless you have years of training they are a terrible idea and if you ever used one you would probably end up hurt pretty bad. Lots of people who attack someone with a knife get caught because they have to go to the hospital. I guess I said that in the hopes that if someone has any option to get a gun instead to go that route for home protection. I think many people watch too many movies, want to be a ninja, or are just scared of guns because they have not had any exposure to them. It is much easier to learn to safely and accurately shoot a gun and become comfortable with one than it is to train to be proficient with a knife. If I couldn't own and use a gun to protect myself then I would move before planning on using a folder as my plan to protect myself, my family, and my property. But that is my view on it and my opinion. If you absolutely can not own a gun then a knife as about a 5th line of defense should be thought about. This is behind a bat/pipe, pepper spray, doberman, or kitchen sink. But at least trying to develop some sort of plan is better than what the average person does which is nothing.

Oh, and I did make a knife suggestion in my second post, the Benchmade Rift. It did a pretty good job of effortlessly cutting the top of my foot open so should cut bad guys ok. Although trying to find a folder with the biggest guard as possible is a good idea even though I'm not sure what a good one would be. Maybe a mini Rukus?

Skirmish.
CQC-12
Chinook 3.
All have enough guard to enable full-power stabs into wood/trees/thick plastic.

I would suggest you buy a nice Sebenza; go little overboard, and buy one with an eye-catching design. If that is not for you, then buy a similar or better quality custom knife that appeals to you.

Now, in case of a home invasion robbery, and assumming that the knife is any where near you, pick the knife up and toss it at your assailant. Don't even bother to open it, the blade will do better if it remains safely tucked in its handle. We are hoping that the perp will say WTF, LOL, and stop to retrieve the knife; because that is going to be your que to bash his skull in with the nearest piece of heavy bric-o-brat.

Then you can calmly pick up the knife, open it, and use it to help you dismember and dispose of the body.

Your home is your terrain, set it up and use it to your advantage. Everything in it is a potential weapon; do something practical and let the other guy fixate on the pocket knife.

This one is a gem and alltogether true from a practical standpoint. However, I am not asking for practical purposes. This is purely to fulfill a curiosity about this genre of knife.

So, is your pick the Sebenza? Wouldn't my hands have a chance of sliding up the handle towards the blade in a mall-ninja kumite?

I understand where you are coming from. I am a perfect example of one of many who can't own a gun or dog living in a campus apartment in NYC. Being that rooms and hallways in my place aren't that big except for my living room, I would feel better having a 8" Ka Bar than a bat but that's just me. If I plant that big blade through your chest your not fighting back. NYC has regulations on tazers and pepper spray as well. You can only have the small or mildest pepper spray I believe. I wouldn't trust a stun gun with my life. Of course, you want to avoid having to use your knife in this manner, and in using it you may in fact get hurt yourself but any non-firearm SD weapon short of hand grenades run that risk. That's life. But I'd rather get stitches or surgery than be killed. I mean if you really want the best HD weapon outside of a gun, I guess you could get a spear or trident that has reach and doesn't require a big swinging motion and force that a bat does.

It depends on the circumstances. Sometimes a bat is better, sometimes a knife, sometime a pillow case filled with door knobs.

I truly don't understand this why does it have to be a folder less than 4 inches since any large kitchen knife would work much better.

Although in trained hands any blade can be quite a force to be reckoned with, a knife in my untrained hands, let alone any folder, and less than 4 inches at that, would not be my first choice for SD.

That said a Cold Steel Medium Espada has good grip, a very strong triad lock, a wide blade suitable for slashing with a very pronounced clip point that should penetrate well. I think the medium espada makes a better utility knife though.

I suggest looking into a firearm for home defense instead.

little over 4" but the Cold Steel Spartan would be my choice (and is). freakin' thing could lop a hand off...and possibly a forearm. very good grip and ergo's. bank vault-like lock up and a "wave" thumb plate that works flawlessy. also, +1 on not using an auto...lock up on any OTF will NEVER be solid and deployment could be an issue.

In NYC you can get good mace as long as you buy it in a gun shop or drug store. I think the store takes your info as well. Bear spray is legal in NY and has no purchasing restrictions as far as I know and you can order that online.

If you are trained to fight with a knife that K-BAR would do just fine however if not, an altercation with a knife can be bloody, messy, and uncertain. It will probably kill but not always immediately.

A knife like a K-BAR would likely be considered a weapon by design in NYC it's blade is not LESS THAN 4 inches (NYC Law a blade that is EXACTLY 4" or more is a no no) for starters and if the tip is sharpened on both sides (swedge) it's considered a dirk or a dagger. I doubt they will believe you own it to carve thanksgiving dinner roasts.

Now that I think of it your thanksgiving dinner roast knife might just do as much damage.

Thank you for the info on the mace. The 4" law is for carrying not in your home. The OP was talking HD so a Ka-Bar should be legal for intents and purposes.

I can't own guns either. This video explains:
