Best weapon-like folder?

Benchmade 710 or Spyderco Military are both good solide performers. I have the G-10 Military so the BM 710 feels a bit more sturdy to me, but I'm sure they'll both do well as folder/weapons.

Folding kerambits of several companies come to mind as well. :)

theres way too many equally viable options. something like the spyderco superhawk probably. stab well and slash better.

These folders have friggin' RIFLEs attached to them! :p

Spyderco P'kal is a good choice. Designed to require only gross motor actions during SD employment. Used reverse grip edge-in the thing can absolutely maul someone up close. I think that people often overestimate the advantage that 4 inch knives have over slightly smaller knives with good ergonomics. Additional standoff capability is obviously important in a knife duel...but that hasn't been normal in this part of the world for the last century and a half. I'd rather carry (and do carry) something better-built for the clinch.

I don't know the statistics about when people actually have to use blades for self defense but if you are planning on using the knife to cut someone off your primary during a weapon-retention scenario I think a p'kal or an Emerson karambit are good choices.

Edit: For self defense in my apartment it's a .45 1911. But, I would not consider a 4-inch folder anything close to first choice. I made a trench knife for a former student of mine who once had a prowler come through a window; also told her to search on google shopping for a fishbat she could put a few nails in. Forget a fullsize baseball bat. Fishbat is where it's at.

It doesn't fold and it sure as hell isn't four inches but it will create a devastating wound channel that will cause major major blood loss and shock in a very short space of time - no matter whether you slash, thrust or chop with it. This is the edged equivalent of a 12 gauge sawed off at close quarters.

There is absolutely no advantage to having a folder over a fixed blade in your home. The only conceivable advantage is if you plan on buying multiples of this knife and stashing them in small spaces around your home so that you can access one no matter where you are in the house as a true last ditch resort.

Otherwise get yourself a fixed blade with a blade length of 9,5 inches or more and keep it where you can get to it double quick. And then drill with it until it feels like its a part of arm - with both hands!

Folders are for slicing fruit, beef jerky and opening packages. If you want to defend yourself, get a real weapon!

This is off topic but do you run across many Confederate battle flags in S. Africa?

I am not asking for self-defense advice. I AM asking for a knife suggestion that fits the genre in 4" blade folding form.

How about more 4" blade folders and less talk of alternatives?

I would say pkal, chinook, onslaught, or if you want somthing reeeeaaally nice go for a Yuna zombie slayer ;)

A 4" folder is not a weapon. That's what everyone is getting at. At home, you can have whatever weapons you want. A gun is what you need. Unless you are a prohibited person like me, get a gun. I keep large knives and bludgeons throughout the house. Did you watch my video?

I just got the Cold Steel Spartan from Charlie Mikes passaround.
Lemme just say it's not really meant for opening envelopes :D

Wouldn't my hands have a chance of sliding up the handle towards the blade in a mall-ninja kumite?

The thread should be "What folder of 4 inch length is best for a Mall-Ninja Kumite."
Then you'd get the answers you're looking for.:p

Spyderco Szabofly. I've been playing with it for a while and it is WICKED sharp. Knife is designed for one thing. That thing is not peeling oranges...

i disagree, while the law may not deem it one in some states in trained hands a 2" knife can tear a artery open...for close combat i know i can trust my knife and its under 4" long, when it comes to self defense with a knife you are not relying on reach. You are not going to carry a gun everywhere, and you are not going to carry some behemoth folder everywhere.
