Beverages and Blades - Traditional of Course

The only thing I knew about Scotch/Scottish ales when visiting Scotland was something they termed Wee-Heavy.....or 90 Shilling. Can't say I liked it.....

I'm not a drinker, but I like the proper use of the Lady Leg

Great pics David :) I haven't been for years, back in the 80's, when it used to be at the Students' Union on Western Bank, it was crazy, packed out, with no room to move, let alone get to the bar, collapsed drunks all over the floors, fights breaking out! That looks like a much more convivial and pleasant environment, and a better venue of course :) Hope you had a great time

Good grief! Either that says a lot about the type of folk who went to university in the 80's or the type of get-togethers beer festivals were back in the day  :D I've been going festivals for 25ish years (including quite a few this year) and I've never seen any trouble at any of them. Not even the huge one in Manchester in January  Had a great time thanks

Maybe it says a lot about Sheffield back in the 80's! :D

In the 70's and early 80's, few students frequented the SU bar for example, it was too tough a place. I used to live just down the road, and sometimes went in as a youngster, and I saw all sorts of things there

Jack. I've said it before. You've really got to write a book about all your adventures on those seven hills.:D I was in Sheffield Scene on Friday and all sorts of people have written books about all sorts of things. I reckon you've got a bestseller in you there :D:thumbsup:

Thanks David :) I have most of the books they stock in there, a few are good, some are terrible, and terribly written (many of them are self-published)! :D I know the lasses there fairly well, and after reading one autobiography I had bought there, I remarked that I found it a terribly depressing read. I was told: "Aye, well he chucked his'self off Hyde Park Flats din't he?"

Going back to SUSU, I remember sitting there having a pint one afternoon, and seeing a distinctive-looking bloke dressed in a white suit offering round a hypodermic to his friends, one of them put his hand out, and he injected him in the back of the hand! About a year later, he was in the papers as he had been dealing heroin, on a grand scale, on behalf of South Yorkshire Police, and was sent to prison along with a Drug Squad detective. The deal was, the police supplied the heroin, he sold it, and they then 'busted' a number of his 'clients', recaptured the drugs, and it was in turn 'recycled'! Sheffield Students Union is one of the roughest places I have ever drunk!

Sounds like you were lucky to get out alive . Walking past Sheffield Uni from the station I get the impression SUSU is a rather more genteel and civilized place these days :D
But I know a couple of bobbies in Liverpool. Apparently some of the older coppers referred to the 70s and 80s as "the good old days". Not because of any rose-tinted reminiscences but literally because what some police got up to back then.
And having read a few autobiographies over the years I'm a great believer for bookshops dividing their autobiography sections into 'funny' and 'your gonna need a drink after reading this'. Though I'm not sure just how big a 'funny' section would be in Britain these days .

Lucky to get out of the 70's alive! :D That's the old Poly down near the station (now Sheffield Hallam University), their SU was in that building, but originally it was the tall building further up, with the poem on the side. Sheffield University Students Union was further out of town, but right next to what was then the red-light area. I think Students' Unions have changed immeasurably since then David, as have students for that matter - not that most of the nefarious characters in the SUSU were students, but one or two were. Shortly before I joined the SUSU gun club, the former full-bore secretary was convicted of amassing firearms and explosives, and the large scale manufacture and distribution of amphetamine sulphate, as well s dealing other drugs! There were certainly plenty of rogues 'on both sides' back then too. I was reading David Peace's 'Red Riding' trilogy recently, can't say I enjoyed them massively, but while it seems shocking to read about today, I don't think the level of police corruption is that overstated, in fact I think he might have been influenced by reality (and possibly by the case I referred to in my previous post) Yes, I'd be for that kind of autobiographical demarcation too! :D

5K Qs 5K Qs , it appears that Scotch Ale is "meatier" than Scottish Ale, and also has a higher alcohol content. Now I have to get some. Thanks!
I know that my wife and daughter refer to Scotch ale as "chatty beer", claiming that I talk more but say less after drinking it.

Come on over, John, these are already cold and they are definitely "meaty!"

That's my favorite Scotch ale, Jeff! ;):thumbsup: And seeing the Beer Belly is always a treat!:thumbsup::cool:

Thanks for the toothpick props, Stuart. :) Your beverage choices there may be pedestrian to you, but they're a couple of my favorites!:thumbsup::cool: (BTW, if anyone ever has the opportunity to visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on Whitefish Point north of Paradise, MI, I highly recommend that you do so. The Edmund Fitzgerald is featured there, since it went down in Lake Superior just off the Point.)

Like Greg, I use the first method GT, it's the only way I've ever made popcorn :) Been a while since I made it actually

Good for you my friend, excellent pic :)

Jack Black Jack Black That shiraz gave me shivers of old remembered delight, as I do love a shiraz and its North American cousin, petite sirah. And I started to go to the cellar to retrieve a shiraz until my wife reminded me that tonight was half-priced burgers at one of our favorite spots. It was there that a post by 5K Qs 5K Qs tipped me to a seasonal brew, a Paulaner Oktoberfest with a Hen & Rooster (Bertram/A.G. Russell) CM-9 at its base. Cheers, y'all!!
