but in the past, the greater quantities of JD I have had was over ice in South Africa
But JD is not a wheated bourbon, as is Maker's and Maker's 46, and much more flavor forward. Wheat whisky and wheated bourbons are lighter at first taste, in my opinion. JD and Makers's = apples/oranges. Still, they should be flavorful over ice, though straight is my preference, too.
