Beverages and Blades - Traditional of Course

Looks like you’re living the life, Alain! 🙂 I hope you had a very merry Christmas!

I didn't do anything formal like a Beer Advent Calendar for the holidays, but I often manage to snag some brews around this time of year that my wife gets me for Christmas or my birthday, which are less than a week apart. She usually gets me brands that I typically don't get for myself during the year, and she tends to get mostly porters and stouts, since she knows I end up liking most of those. One liquid gift she gave me was a 12-pack of 4 different kinds of stout from the Saugatuck (MI) Brewing Co. Here's one of them, their Neapolitan Milk Stout. I'm quite amazed that I can taste and/or smell all 3 of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry in this stout. Not my favorite stout, by any means, but it's certainly very drinkable and technically impressive (to a non-brewer like I am).

That’s certainly an interesting one, GT. Sounds like one of those things that has the potential to go really wrong, so I’m glad it was drinkable, even if it won’t be a new favorite. (I once had a Maple Bacon Ale, might be the worst beer I’ve ever had. Tasted like what I would assume the dirty dish water at a Waffle House would taste like.) 😵‍💫

Last couple Utah beers tonight before we head back home. First up was Hop Nosh IPA from Uinta Brewing Co., a really good citrusy American IPA. 7.3% ABV, but you can’t tell. I’ve had some of Uinta’s other brews before (can’t remember if that was in AZ or MN), but this was my first time trying this one. If I can find it around me, it might become a regular.

After that, Epic Brewing’s Son of a Baptist Coffee Stout with Cacao Nibs. This beer smells incredible, and it tastes nearly as good as it smells. Dark, roasted malt and coffee, with a bit of bittersweet chocolate. 8.0% ABV. Really good stuff.

Thank you Barrett!
Looks like you also had good time. As far as I know I guess you have relatives in some fine places ! And that 25, Oh my! 😺

I had a really merry Christmas, help was welcomed to face the magnum!
I also received my birthday gift (better later than never! 😼) that my daughter brought back from a trip in Auvergne.

No........before I'm accused of being a flash ol' fart from across the pond, it was a present, wouldn't spend that amount of money on a single bottle.

I'd been given it about 3yrs ago, and foolishly, I now understand, had stored it on its side thinking it'd keep better. No way, the alcohol level is too high and rots the cork which taints the contents. Having just found this out, I panicked and opened it. Thankfully, glorious.........."toffee with hazlenut notes" according to the blurb. Too right.

Dylan, I've enjoyed your and Barrett's reports on the beers in your "Advent Calendars"!:cool::thumbsup:
I think the beers you've been drinking this month are more to my taste than those in Barrett's German Calendar; your wife and daughter seem to have done a fantastic job! 🤓

Do you remember where you got your Killian's drinking vessel pictured above? I probably drink more Killian's Irish Red than any other single brand of beer, and should look into finding a mug something like yours. Thanks!

My apologies, GT, for the late response. The family and myself have been a bit under the weather the past week. To answer you question, I had to ask my wife as I could not recall where we had acquired it - she believes that she found it at a thrift store. I drank a fair bit of Killian's in my early beer drinking days and I kind of drifted away from it as my curiosity evolved.

I did do some cursory searching though and it looks like it might be somewhat available but I will do some further digging and PM you with more details.

Thanks for the reply, Dylan. I hope you and yours are feeling 100% again ASAP.
You need not spend any more time on this than you already have! I'm sure I can find something if I invest a little more of my time. In fact, after reading your post, I did a quick Google search for "Killian's Irish Red Mug" and seemed to find lots of possibilities on eBay on which I can follow up. I'll bet by changing "mug" to "glass" or "tankard" or "drinking vessel" etc. I might get a bunch more possibilities in a variety of styles.
I really appreciate your helpful reply!:thumbsup: 🤓

I finished off the last drop of my Apfel Korn while watching old videos and reliving my youth.

The Sex Pistols last gig and Johnny is on top malevolent form.

I always put the glasses in the freezer, this time I had put the bottle in as well and it froze.

I didn't expect that as I have seen it done in Germany before, maybe they drink it quicker than me.😆

This drink goes well alongside a crisp German lager, perfect try it sometime.

Pint of one of Brew York's IPAs in the pub yesterday :)

Great picture Jon, and a nice win for the Blues! That’s a great beer. Did you sneak some of that awesome beer home on the plane, or does Urban Chestnut have distribution in Florida? 🍻

It was a good game. The winter classic is supposed to be super cold.
There are a couple places I can occasionally find urban chestnut. If I could have brought any home it would have been city wide from 4 hands or the coffee stout from Schafly

Nice choices, I really like the City Wide, especially on draft, my wife likes the stouts and porters.
Schlafly's Baltic Porter. Best dark beer I've ever had.
Going to have to try that one Jeff, I’m not familiar with it, if it’s a porter my wife will like it. 👍

Here is a stocking stuffer my daughter gave me this year. She used some online app and then emailed it to me Christmas morning. I like how she put a baby picture and then a more recent photo of our last fishing trip together. Since she turned 21 we have had a lot of fun visiting different breweries. She’s a senior in college so she wanted to stress that this was for 2 beers and the rest would be on me! 🤣5CBFF163-7DBA-4DED-894B-CE8FD4E94C38.jpeg

That is awesome!

Jon, the main beer I miss from back home is Schlafly's Baltic Porter. Best dark beer I've ever had.
I don’t think I’ve seen that one before. For whatever reason I was able to find Schlafly no problem in New Jersey, but here it’s nowhere to be found

England 15c today even though its overcast 😁

So I made a coffee and sat outside to read some more of Nessmuk, sadly I found it hard to concentrate.

But there is always something he says that sticks in the mind.

I can assure you not one Frenchman/Frenchwoman will agree with the last paragraph. 🤣🤣🤣
