Long. But necessary. It has been the 21st of May since his last reply to me. So apparently, he has considered this matter closed.
Jeffrey J. McClain aka "LandRover" on these forums offered 2 coats to trade even for a Chris Reeve fix blade. I responded by asking for pics/ urls of these 2 coats. After a few e mails I found some of the necessary info I needed. I then offered him a Chris Reeve Sable IV, one of which he had posted to trade for on his original thread here at BFC. I stated clearly that it was NIB with all papers, tissue wrap, etc. He stated that he would accept it as a trade. Before my finalizing any deal, I had inquired as to the 2 coats' conditions. I made it VERY CLEAR that I intended to give either of the two as a gift to a friend. He replied that when he was a business manager at a big outfitters store that he could get any of such merchandise he wanted at a discount. And that these 2 particular coats were display pieces only. And were sitting in storage in his closet ever since he got them when the store closed down. He stated that "... both are excellent and had no marks of any kind". He guaranteed that I will like them. Or I could send them back for my CRK Sable IV.
Sounded like a great deal to me. I again stated in a following reply that as long as both are like new and in good enough condition to give as gifts, then we have a deal. He replied that he was confident that I will like and keep the coats. And that they are just as described.
We agreed to ship out simultaneously. He was delayed by some circumstances. No problem I told him. I received the coats 2/3 days after his CRK Sable IV arrived to him. Upon inspection of the 2 coats, this is what I discovered:
*Helly Hansen:
Fleece collar and fleece lined pockets had a slight fuzz/ wear texture; hair of either human or canine/ feline persuasion; a distinctive scent of some brand of cologne. All indications that this coat had been worn. But still in good condition I' ll say.
*Barbour:
Broken off cuff button, a 3 finger size hole in right hand lower pocket, a human finger nail clipping, a small piece of tree bark(?), a shopping receipt, all in other one pocket, 5 pieces of Werthers butterscotch candies in inside greast pocket, hair (see above) and that same disctinctive cologne scent!!!
Clearly not in "as good as new condition" as he had confirmed.
I then e mailed Jeffrey MClain immediately and asked for an explanation. He then blatantly stated that he had already stated on his original post on this forum that both were demo pieces. And that they were tried on by people, fitted on manequins, and moved about many times thruout the store. While this may be true, it is in fact not posted on his original thread. A simple check will confirm this. Further he stated that if I wanted a better piece that I should just go and spend the $375- $400 for a new one at a retail store. He also added that he can get $225 for the Barbour and $195- $200 for the HH on E-Bay. I doubt it if he had disclosed these conditions that I discovered. He then said that he could get the CRK Sable at dealer cost. So what? At this point I asked him again if he had checked the coats or not prior to sending them out. He replied again that if I didn' t like them, that I can send them back. Or go ahead and spend $25 to have it refurbished at a Barbour retailer! And that he does not check everything under a microscope!
It didn' t take a microscope to discover what I did! Where the heck does this guy come from?
My following e mails to him offered some ways to correct this matter. I indicated that the slight wear, hair and cologne scent was no biggie. But the hole, broken button, etc. on the Barbour was an issue. I suggested for him to reimburse me for cleaning and repair work. Or that he would cover my return shipping expenses ($18.90 according to his shipping box postage) should I choose to return them. He replied he would not. And again stated that I got a great deal and that if I wanted something brand new that I should just go purchase it at retail price at a store!
I repeated to him once again that I had cleary stated that either of the 2 coats were intended to be given as gift(s).
I remained civil and patient thruout this entire correspondence. Until his last e mail to me on the 05/21 that was filled with vulgarity, profanity and other colorful decriptives.
Attempting to turn the entire matter on my shoulders, he exclaimed that "... I can go F*CK myself", "...you J*CKOFF", accused me of playing a cheap little con on him, and stated that I didn' t understand good ole American english. And that he wouldn' t pay for a weeks of dry cleaning bills for me. He also stated that the CRK Sable IV was a piece of junk anyway. And that he only agreed to trade with me because I was the first to respond to his post. What a crock. Funny, I didn' t know he wanted to trade the coats for a "piece of junk". He simply could have stated that he will hold off on any trade til he found what he preferred.
My last response to him was in simple plain strong language. And that he was quite a brave person hiding behind a screen. Nuff said.
Bottom line is this:
Coats were NOT in condition as described. And that I should NOT have to foot the bill for return shipping costs nor any necessary cleaning/ repair cost. NOT for a mistake/ screw up (or intentional???)that he was responsible for.
So for those of you who are contemplating doing business with Jeffrey J. McClain, aka "LandRover"- BEWARE!!!
