Long. But necessary. It has been the 21st of May since his last reply to me. So apparently, he has considered this matter closed.

Jeffrey J. McClain aka "LandRover" on these forums offered 2 coats to trade even for a Chris Reeve fix blade. I responded by asking for pics/ urls of these 2 coats. After a few e mails I found some of the necessary info I needed. I then offered him a Chris Reeve Sable IV, one of which he had posted to trade for on his original thread here at BFC. I stated clearly that it was NIB with all papers, tissue wrap, etc. He stated that he would accept it as a trade. Before my finalizing any deal, I had inquired as to the 2 coats' conditions. I made it VERY CLEAR that I intended to give either of the two as a gift to a friend. He replied that when he was a business manager at a big outfitters store that he could get any of such merchandise he wanted at a discount. And that these 2 particular coats were display pieces only. And were sitting in storage in his closet ever since he got them when the store closed down. He stated that "... both are excellent and had no marks of any kind". He guaranteed that I will like them. Or I could send them back for my CRK Sable IV.

Sounded like a great deal to me. I again stated in a following reply that as long as both are like new and in good enough condition to give as gifts, then we have a deal. He replied that he was confident that I will like and keep the coats. And that they are just as described.

We agreed to ship out simultaneously. He was delayed by some circumstances. No problem I told him. I received the coats 2/3 days after his CRK Sable IV arrived to him. Upon inspection of the 2 coats, this is what I discovered:

*Helly Hansen:
Fleece collar and fleece lined pockets had a slight fuzz/ wear texture; hair of either human or canine/ feline persuasion; a distinctive scent of some brand of cologne. All indications that this coat had been worn. But still in good condition I' ll say.

*Barbour:
Broken off cuff button, a 3 finger size hole in right hand lower pocket, a human finger nail clipping, a small piece of tree bark(?), a shopping receipt, all in other one pocket, 5 pieces of Werthers butterscotch candies in inside greast pocket, hair (see above) and that same disctinctive cologne scent!!!   Clearly not in "as good as new condition" as he had confirmed.

I then e mailed Jeffrey MClain immediately and asked for an explanation. He then blatantly stated that he had already stated on his original post on this forum that both were demo pieces. And that they were tried on by people, fitted on manequins, and moved about many times thruout the store. While this may be true, it is in fact not posted on his original thread. A simple check will confirm this. Further he stated that if I wanted a better piece that I should just go and spend the $375- $400 for a new one at a retail store. He also added that he can get $225 for the Barbour and $195- $200 for the HH on E-Bay. I doubt it if he had disclosed these conditions that I discovered. He then said that he could get the CRK Sable at dealer cost. So what? At this point I asked him again if he had checked the coats or not prior to sending them out. He replied again that if I didn' t like them, that I can send them back. Or go ahead and spend $25 to have it refurbished at a Barbour retailer! And that he does not check everything under a microscope! It didn' t take a microscope to discover what I did! Where the heck does this guy come from?

My following e mails to him offered some ways to correct this matter. I indicated that the slight wear, hair and cologne scent was no biggie. But the hole, broken button, etc. on the Barbour was an issue. I suggested for him to reimburse me for cleaning and repair work. Or that he would cover my return shipping expenses ($18.90 according to his shipping box postage) should I choose to return them. He replied he would not. And again stated that I got a great deal and that if I wanted something brand new that I should just go purchase it at retail price at a store! I repeated to him once again that I had cleary stated that either of the 2 coats were intended to be given as gift(s).

I remained civil and patient thruout this entire correspondence. Until his last e mail to me on the 05/21 that was filled with vulgarity, profanity and other colorful decriptives.

Attempting to turn the entire matter on my shoulders, he exclaimed that "... I can go F*CK myself", "...you J*CKOFF", accused me of playing a cheap little con on him, and stated that I didn' t understand good ole American english. And that he wouldn' t pay for a weeks of dry cleaning bills for me. He also stated that the CRK Sable IV was a piece of junk anyway. And that he only agreed to trade with me because I was the first to respond to his post. What a crock. Funny, I didn' t know he wanted to trade the coats for a "piece of junk". He simply could have stated that he will hold off on any trade til he found what he preferred.

My last response to him was in simple plain strong language. And that he was quite a brave person hiding behind a screen. Nuff said.

Bottom line is this:

Coats were NOT in condition as described. And that I should NOT have to foot the bill for return shipping costs nor any necessary cleaning/ repair cost. NOT for a mistake/ screw up (or intentional???)that he was responsible for.

So for those of you who are contemplating doing business with Jeffrey J. McClain, aka "LandRover"- BEWARE!!!

Nakano

You stated that he said if ya didnt like the coats you could send them back for your knife....is he willing to honor that?

Would suck for ya to have to pay the 18 dollars shipping when he mis-represented the coats to you.....but at least you might get your knife back.

He should have checked the coats. Its the sellers moral obligation to be up front about condition. Things will be missed which is ok as long as the seller is man enough to stand up and make things right.

His response to you shows what a small little man (and I use that term loosely) he is. It takes a real weasel to sit at home and be happy that he pulled a fast one on some unsuspecting person.

Land Rover, seems that more and more folks like you are popping up on the forum....sure wish your kind would go find somewhere else to play your crooked little games.

Now, let's see. You managed to get about $600 worth of coats for a $200 knife, and you are complaining about having to replace a button and maybe a little dry cleaning? Regardless of how you and Landrover ended up feeling about each other, I still think you got one hell of a deal. Not trying to start any wars here, but I think I would just let this one die, and enjoy your good deal on the coats, IMO.

Sorry this happened to you amigo.
If there is any doubt about Nakano's character, let it be known that he is one of the most upstanding folks to grace this Forum. He's been here since the paint was still wet, doing good deals & offering good info. If he says he's been done wrong, I'm in his corner.
Go get 'em Kin,
Mike

If I read this right it's not about the price of the items in dollars. It's the principle of misrepresentation of the items (coats) in question. FWIW, I think none of us should have any tolerance for being told to go **** ourselves, etc. I wonder if these guys would have the balls to say that to one of our faces.
Get your knife back if you can. Thanks for the warning.

Rugger: Ditto

Regardless of the "deal" misrepresentation is just that.

Kin Eng/ Nakano is one of the finest people you could do business with here. Apparently Landrover is another one for us to ignore. LR, if you do not care for this repersentation of your character here, now is the time to clear this mess up rather than later.

As far as emailing anyone with such suggestion, hmmm, would you say that to his face? Particularly as you got insulted about your obvious error? Momma always taught me if you have to screech, curse and shout to make your point, it probably is not worth making. Kin, sorry buddy, you deserve better than this.

Oh yes indeed, the price difference is not the point at all. It would not matter to me if they were $5000 coats for a $200 blade....
Misrepresenting an item for sale or trade, intentionally or unintentionally is just cause for being upset, and it is always the responsiblity of the misrepresenter to rectify the situation.

I won't be doing any business with landrover, regardless of how this situation turns out..

Matter of fact, I won't be buying any land rover automobiles either :D

Its a good story but it is definitly one sided. In the emails with Kin I told him these where Manufacture Reps display pieces and I judged them as best I could. If for any reason no questions asked he did not like them, send them back.He did not want to do that, he wants me to pay shipping, dry cleaning, repair cost plus shipping to and from manufacture etc. That was not the deal, its pretty simple, you don't like or feel you where wrong send them back end of story. I could get 275.00 a piece for them on ebay with out any problem. The Barbour store in Manhatten refurbishes the Coats anually for free.I emailed you 4 times with instructions to send the coats back and every time you tried to extort money or threated to tell this big story on the forums if I did not pay. So you got your story, Big deal

With respect to all,

I am in the process of a deal with Kin now. He asks very clear questions. It is difficult for me to believe that the problems were not noticed by LandRover. A good faith description, I believe, would have gone a long way.

I am still very new here, so weigh my opinion lightly.

Land Rover, tell your story walking.
Kin Eng/Nakano2 is one of the most upstanding ethical members we have here. I tell you this not from dealing with him on the internet where even you can be a commando and say things to him you'd never say to his face, but from knowing him in real life. I guarantee you wouldnt talk to him that way in person. At least not more than once.
It doesnt matter if they refinish the coats for free or if they are worth 10 times the cost of the knife-they were not what you said, period.
Kin, sorry you had these problems with this guy, do yourself a favor, spend the $18 and send the coats back as long as the knife is still in the same condition you sent it in.

This deal from the beginning was on Kin terms, when I agreed to send these coats to him I said I would send Fedex Next day priority because I have a Corp account and for him to return them would have cost him nothing, They could of been billed back to me but he did not want that. So they where sent USPS express thats why it cost 18.00 dollars. Kin has expressed no desire to return the Coats, he just wants me to pay alot of extra costs that I have no contol over and never agreed to. Its simple, you no like send them Back. The Helly retails for 410.00 the Barbour for 389.00. The barbour was sent in the plastic packaging with the paper work and tags, Hell I never opened it since its been in storage. Judge as you will, but my opion of Kin remains the same.He is just trying to extort this matter.

Land Rover,

Let me get this straight. You offered up for trade a couple of expensive coats that you got at a HUGE discount. Made a trade for a knife that you were happy with. Then sent the coats to the other party without ever even bothering to inspect the coats?????

That just spells out either DUMB ASS or LIAR to me. Pick one, doesn't matter.

I have done MANY deals with Kin, and if he say's the deal is a dud, then I have every reason to believe it is. Period.

Take your scam somewhere else.

before digging in or bad-mouthing Mr. Eng any further.

Although I don't post a whole lot, in the year or so since becoming a member of this forum, I've made it a point to log on just about every day. I have followed quite a few threads on the GBU during that time and it never ceases to amaze me how tight knit a "band of brothers" we have here. From a buyers perspective, it's quite comforting. Early on, I felt confident in doing the few deals I did because it seemed like these guys really knew how to self-police the transactions that went down and woe to those who failed live up to the protocols and standards of behavior expected of anyone doing buisness here on BF. When controversies arise, I have always felt that, by and large, the members are very fair about listening to both sides of the story prior to weighing in. Once that happens though, and the "verdict" is rendered, it usually does little or no good for the "losing" side to continue to insist that they are right and everone else is wrong - not if one wants to continue to be considered a "member in good standing." If that's NOT important to you, your days are numbered.

As I see it, part of the problem you have to overcome (whatever your specific contentions vis-a-vis this particular deal) is the fact that Mr. Eng has obviously paid his dues around here and his reputation and degree of trust-worthyness are all but impeccable. He's done his time and earned that rep fair and square. People KNOW him. He has nothing to prove.

You, on the other hand, like myself, are the newcomers. We DO have something to prove and our track record with respect to satisfactory deals done is our only means of establishing ourselves as men of character and integrity. Or, more to the point, men/women of the caliber necessary to be considered a member of this unique community.

My advice: Swallow your pride and do WHATEVER it takes to make this deal right. (i.e. pay the shipping, refund his money, give him back his knife, pay for his repairs - whatever!) Losing money/time/effort (or the perceived loss thereof) are minor in comparison to the loss of ones reputation. It's probably not to late. I've seen members come back from the dead.

You'll be a better man for it. Good luck. :)

This is simple to resolve.Reverse the trade and never deal with each other again. All that is lost is shipping too both parties, small price to pay.

I remain amazed at how little self respect some people exhibit.
Jeffrey has some growing up to do:rolleyes:
Martin

Nakano 2 should just send the items back for a full refund if he's not happy with the trade.

That said, 'truth in advertising' goes a long way in defining a person's character...'nuf said'

Everything else is just so much 'foo'...

D.B.C.

I usually don't respond to thing's like this
but I feel the need to support Kin Eng's
reputation on this issue.
I have had several dealing's with Nakano
and have never had a problem. I have bought
item's from him, and sold him item's.
If Kin say's he will mail the item/payment to you
on a certain date consider it done.
When he describes a knife/item be assured
the description is very accurate, Period !!
I haven't had any dealing's with LandRover
so I can't comment on him.
Hopefully this issue can be resolved soon.
Mike/Reno;)
